LAS VEGAS – In his push to become the greatest fighter of all-time, Jon Jones is turning his attention to bigger things.
Jones, who successfully defended the UFC light heavyweight championship for the eighth time with his victory over Daniel Cormier on Saturday night in the main event of UFC 182, admits he wants to challenge himself against heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez.
“I would fight Cain Velasquez in a heartbeat,” Jones said at the post-fight press conference. “I really would. I would love to fight AKA’s best athletes. I believe I can defeat them all, our team is the best in the world.
Of course, Jones still has challenges left at 205 pounds, including the winner of the upcoming Alexander Gustafsson–Anthony Johnson fight in Sweden. So Jones immediately reeled in expectations, but allowed himself to admit that a move to heavyweight is something on his long-term radar.
“I really don’t even want to talk about heavyweight anymore. I’m making weight pretty good. When I do go to heavyweight, it’s something me and Dana talked about, it’s the right opponent, and it will be for the right purse.”
