Jon Jones on notorious Instagram video: ‘I find it funny, I really do’

We didn’t hear much from Jon Jones during the period in which he and his management negotiated with the UFC on a rematch with Alexander Gustafsson.

Except for one brief-but-memorable moment.

On June 3, the UFC light heavyweight champion posted an unforgettable Instagram video responding to his online haters, ending with the line “It’s my career, not yours.”

Jones soon deleted the post, but not before it went viral. On Monday’s edition of The MMA Hour, Jones said he knew exactly what he was doing.

“I understand that doing certain things get certain reactions,” Jones said. “I find it funny, I really do.”

Well some have called on Jones to embrace the backlash he always seems to get from a segment of the audience, the champ says that he doesn’t neatly fit into any category, no matter how hard people try.

“I just think that I’m a really original character and I don’t think people know how to categorize me,” Jones said. “So they want me to be a certain way. What people have to realize and remember is that I can never be exactly who they want me to be. I need to be myself wholeheartedly and have fun with everything.”

Presumably, that includes future Instagram posts which get yanked.

“More than likely yes,” Jones said. “I think the video gets talked about even more when it gets taken down.”
