In perhaps one of the most anticipated grappling matchups in recent memory, former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Light Heavyweight champion Jon Jones made fairly easy work of Dan Henderson in the headlining bout of Submission Underground 2.
“Bones” was the aggressor throughout, and eventually locked in a fight-ending arm triangle choke at 6:39.
Our very own Patrick Stumberg had the call:
“Jones starts with his classic crawl and puts Hendo on the fence. They separate and Jones flicks out a jab, Henderson retaliating by putting his right hand out there. Jones gets in on Hendo’s hips against the fence, looking for a high crotch. They battle for wrist control and separate. Jones pulls guard, Hendo waves him up. Slick entries from Jones and he briefly gets over-unders. More pressure from Jones. Lovely level change from Jones and he takes Henderson down into side control. Four minutes to go. Jones floats to north-south, then the opposite side control. Christ almighty the FloGrappling stream is garbage. Hendo spins for an armbar, can’t get it. Jones moves back to side control and north-south. Good control by Jones, who briefly threatens an americana. Hendo regains half guard with two minutes to go. Jones locks up an arm-triangle and swiftly works his way to side control for the tapout.”
“Bones” moves to 1-0 in his professional grappling career.
While it doesn’t exactly settle the score between the two men after their scheduled UFC 151 bout was scratched, it gives fight fans a glimpse of what they could have witnessed a few years ago.
Henderson now proceeds to go back into the life of a retired fighter while Jones still has to ride the pine until at least July of 2017 after he reached a settlement with Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) for his failed drug test prior to UFC 200.
In the co-main event of the evening, Miesha Tate defeated Jessica Eye via fastest escape after there bout went to a third sudden victory.
