UFC tournament? Yes, please.

Tom Aspinall defended his UFC Interim Heavyweight championship at UFC 304 last night (Sat., July 27, 2024) when he knocked out Curtis Blaydes in one minute from inside the Co-Op Live in Manchester, England (watch highlights).

After his fight, Aspinall called out Jon Jones for a fight in the most respectful way possible.

During the UFC 304 post-fight press conference (watch here), Aspinall was asked about Jones 568 times and a super fight with Alex Pereira, and he came up with a tremendous idea: a four-person tournament.

“Here’s a thought for you; I was thinking about this the other day. So, they’re saying Jon Jones and Stipe [Miocic] are going to fight at MSG in November,” Aspinall told the media. “Why don’t we do a tournament: Jon vs. Stipe and me vs. Alex. Do a four-man tournament, two fights in one night, and let’s find out who the real Heavyweight champion is.”

We got the greatest Heavyweight of all time, we got the greatest MMA fighter of all time, we got the Light Heavyweight champion, and me who is just a poxy Interim champion. Let’s do that…wouldn’t that be a cool little thing, two fights in one night. I got the lowest average fight time in the UFC, and it’s even lower after tonight; my chances in that tournament are pretty good.”

While this is an excellent idea in theory, unfortunately, UFC doesn’t like having fun and refuses to participate in tournaments for some odd reason.

Nevertheless, Aspinall is nearly perfect in UFC besides blowing his knee out against Blades in 2021 and is riding a three-fight win streak with a 100% finish rate.
