According to Jon Jones, you must be joking if you’re calling Khabib Nurmagomedov the “GOAT”
Jon Jones has clearly taken offense to those labeling Khabib Nurmagomedov as the “GOAT” after the Russian’s retirement.
Nurmagomedov retired with a flawless record of 29-0 this past weekend after submitting Justin Gaethje at UFC 254, defending his lightweight title for the third consecutive time in the process. Straight after the win, Jones was quick to declare himself as “MMA’s GOAT” and explain why Nurmagomedov shouldn’t have that title.
Now talking in a recently posted video to his Instagram account, Jones doubled down on his claims.
“I’m talking to all you Khabib fans out there,” said Jones. “Fifteen world titles to your guys’ four, and you guys are really talking about who’s the best fighter ever? You guys are joking, right?
“Fifteen to four. Are you guys’ kidding me.”
Jones is referring to his 15 world title fights, all of which he has won apart from one that was changed to a no-contest after a failed drug test. ‘Bones’ continued by suggesting the only fighter who could come close to his achievements is 39-year-old Georges St-Pierre. The former welterweight champion is 39-years-old and has been retired since last year.
“The only person that could possibly come back and challenge my record and what I’ve done in the UFC is possibly Georges St-Pierre. He would have to come back and win two championship fights to tie me, and I’m not even retired yet. I’m 33 years old. I’ve got a whole other chapter to go through.
“And all you guys who are going with this he’s more dominant argument, the just recently started fighting elite-level competition. Could you imagine me against the No. 10 ranked guy?”
He also sent a bunch of tweets on the topic. Here’s a few of them:
