The BMF title holder expressed some kind words for a former UFC rival.

When Jorge Masvidal beat the then-undefeated Ben Askren, he was unforgiving after a long and heated build up to their bout at UFC 239. This was despite recording a stunning flying-knee knockout over the former Olympian and also doing it in the quickest time in UFC history (5 seconds).

However, recently ‘Gamebred’ tweeted a surprising message of praise for the retired former ONE and Bellator champion. “Shout out to [Ben Askren] who never tucked tail after his loss. Made no excuses. Took it on the chin and never censored the haters like a coward,” wrote Masvidal.

Askren graciously responded to his former foe shortly after, seemingly receptive to the olive branch that was being extended. “Sometimes life kicks your butt when you least expect it,” he wrote. “Make no excuses and move on.”

Masvidal and Askren’s exchange follows the aftermath of the UFC 245 main event in which welterweight champion Kamaru Usman successfully defended his belt against Colby Covington. Following the loss, Covington launched a scathing attack on referee Marc Goddard about what he felt was a controversial stoppage in the final round of the championship bout.

Masvidal, earlier in the year cut ties with Covington, who was a former teammate and friend. Gamebred alleged that the reason for doing so the former welterweight interim champion not paying a coach. Masvidal remained ruthlessly critical following Covington’s loss; referring to the incident in question.

“They say never kick a man when he is down but you not a man. Should’ve paid my coach, it’s cheaper than getting your jaw wired shut.”
