Kamaru Usman offers a message to former UFC lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez after his latest loss inside of the cage. The former UFC star decided to depart from the Las Vegas-based promotion in order to sign with ONE Championship.
Alvarez’s long-awaited debut for ONE Championship took place over the weekend against Timofey Nastyukhin in the opening round of the promotion’s Lightweight Grand Prix at the ONE Championship “New Era” event in Tokyo, Japan.
This is where he suffered a knockout loss. Following the fight, the current UFC welterweight champion took to his official Twitter account where he wrote the following:
“Classic [Eddie Alvarez],” Usman wrote. “Go to a new promotion take an L and then rip thru the entire division and run away with the belt.”
For a history lesson, Usman is referring to Alvarez losing is UFC promotional debut to Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone.
Alvarez went 4-3 with one no contest during his time with the UFC after signing with the promotion in 2014. This was after getting out of his contract with Bellator MMA where he was a two-time Bellator lightweight champion.
He would later go on to beat Gilbert Melendez, ex-UFC champ Anthony Pettis, and then-undisputed champ Rafael dos Anjos to win the title. He lost the title to Conor McGregor at the UFC 205 pay-per-view event. This was his climb to the top of the mountain of the UFC’s lightweight division.
