The undisputed lightweight championship is at stake in Melbourne, Australia.
Tonight (June 4th in North America, or early Sunday, June 5th if you’re in Australia) at a packed Marvel Stadium, unified WBO/IBF/WBA champion George Kambosos Jr (20-0, 10 KOs) takes on WBC champion Devin Haney (27-0, 15 KOs) in what is a homecoming fight for the Aussie against the 23-year-old American sensation.
Kambosos Jr shocked the boxing world last year when he dethroned Teofimo Lopez and took all of his titles in New York. A major underdog as a mandatory challenger, Kambosos dropped Lopez, survived a knockdown of his own, and won a deserved decision to make him the man to beat at 135 lbs. Haney was a standout amateur who has scored wins over the likes of Jorge Linares, JoJo Diaz, and Yuriorkis Gamboa in recent years, and now he’s getting his biggest matchup of his career as part of his new deal with Top Rank Boxing. Both men are talented boxers without being big punchers, but don’t be surprised if we see someone get hurt in this contest. Unlike the Lopez fight, Kambosos is only a slight underdog according to DraftKings Sportsbook.
This post will include full play-by-play for the headliner. Preliminary card action begins at 7:30 PM ET/4:30 PM PT on ESPN+, before the main card starts at 9 PM ET/6 PM PT on ESPN and ESPN+. The main event should start at around 11 PM ET/8 PM PT but it’ll probably be up to an hour later. Those in Australia can purchase this event via Main Events PPV at 11 AM AEST.

Both men land on the inside. Haney with a chopping right hand. Wild swing of a hook by Kambosos and he only gets air. Late left by Haney before the bell. 29-28 Haney.
Round 4 – Kambosos having a hard time landing anything clean. Good body jab by Haney. Hard right hand around the guard from Haney. Right to the body by Haney. Kambosos tagged by a lead left all while struggling to even throw punches. There’s a jab by Kambosos that excites the crowd. Hook by Kambosos partially blocked. Kambosos eats a left. 39-37 Haney.
Round 5 – Beautiful uppercut by Haney jacks the jaw of Kambosos. A sharp jab by Haney who is taking the crowd out of this. Kambosos can’t get past Haney’s jab. Good exchange on the inside results in Kambosos eating a right but landing a punch in return. A body shot by Kambosos and then he looks for an overhand right but Haney’s defense is exemplary. 49-46 Haney.
Round 6 – Jab and jab and jab from Haney. Sense a pattern? Followed one of those jabs with an overhand right. Counter body shot by Haney. Finally a solid left hook connects for Kambosos. Easily one of his best punches all night. There’s just too much holding and clinching going on and it’s making for a bad fight. Haney with a check hook. They’re both holding and hitting. 59-55 Haney.
Round 7 – Lunging hook by Haney and then a jab. Kambosos responds with a body shot. Right hand in close by Kambosos. Wicked body shot by Haney. There’s a right by Kambosos that gets the crowd interested. Might have been a clash of heads there but no cut. Stiff, quickfire jab by Haney and then again. Kambosos has no answers for that jab. A counter right by Haney while on the backfoot. Just so clever from the Oakland native. A 1-2 by Haney who is starting to get into an offensive rhythm. 69-64 Haney.
Round 8 – Haney changing the levels with the jab. Going head and then to the body in next to no time at all. Kambosos needs a miracle or corrupt judging. Big right hand by Haney and that shook up Kambosos a bit. Kambosos swing and a miss. He’s trying but he’s got nothing positive going. Up jab by Haney and again. Left hook and then a right by Haney who is really upping his aggression. Crowd is antsy as their man is in serious danger of losing his belts. 79-73 Haney.
Round 9 – Double jab and a left uppercut by Haney. Big right hand by Haney! Kambosos answers with a right. Another right forces a hold by Kambosos. Down goes Haney after getting tackled. No knockdown, obviously. Haney restarts the boxing lesson on the Aussie. Kambosos just letting his hands go hoping for anything. Nice right hand by Kambosos. George’s face gets tattooed with even more jabs. Rough and tumble stuff but Haney in full command. 89-82 Haney.
Round 10 – Right hook to the body by Haney. Devin sticking to his jab-heavy gameplan. Left by Haney and Kambosos responds with body work. Nice right hand by Kambosos but not enough to shake Haney. Right hand by Kambosos and then he holds Haney’s arm while throwing a punch. Admonishment by the referee. Decent exchange and both men score. Kambosos with a left forearm more than anything to Haney’s face. Just missed on an uppercut did Kambosos. Ehhh I think he might have gotten that round. 98-93 Haney.
Round 11 – Clubbing right by Kambosos can’t connect cleanly. Jab by Haney and yet again. The holding has resumed. Haney with two jabs. Oh another jab by Haney and then he dodges a Kambosos power shot. Left hook and a right hand by Haney. Total clowning. Straight right by Haney and then a counter right as Kambosos lunged. Crowd can boo all they want, their guy is getting beaten. 108-102 Haney.
Round 12 – Kambosos obviously needs a KO and he’s just not letting his hands go enough. This is a far cry from the Teofimo Lopez fight. And then he fires a hopeless hook and gets caught out of position. Sweeping hook from Haney and then he keeps Kambosos at the end of that jab. Short left by Haney and then a tie-up. One minute left until Devin Haney is the undisputed lightweight champion. Good right by Kambosos. Uppercut by Kambosos. Haney kinda running out the clock. 117-111 Haney.
