Kelvin Gastelum gives a brief post-fight statement following his unanimous decision loss to Jared Cannonier.
UFC middleweight Kelvin Gastelum suffered a second consecutive loss last night at UFC on ESPN 29 but believes with a few ‘small adjustments’ he will be back in the title mix in no time.
Gastelum dropped a unanimous decision loss to No. 3-ranked middleweight Jared Cannonier in a competitive five-round contest at the UFC Apex Center in Las Vegas. The Ultimate Fighter 17 winner congratulated Cannonier on the victory while doubling down on his mission to become champion.
Congratulations to Jared Cannonier on a very competitive fight!
Small adjustments and we’re back on top!
Tonight just proved that! We’re very close to being the best in the world.
Almost there & On to the next one!— #OnAmission4Gold (@KelvinGastelum) August 22, 2021
“Congratulations to Jared Cannonier on a very competitive fight!Small adjustments and we’re back on top!Tonight just proved that! We’re very close to being the best in the world.Almost there & On to the next one!” Gastelum posted on Twitter following the fight.
Gastelum is now 1-5 in his last six fights but the 29-year-old is still considered one of the top fighters at middleweight. The former interim title challenger has shown flashes of greatness throughout his career mixed with bouts of inconsistency and issues with weight cutting. He previously competed at 170 pounds but repeated failures to make weight forced the Kings MMA product to move up to middleweight, where he is clearly undersized.
Don’t be surprised to see Gastelum move back to welterweight if he to struggles to gain momentum at 180 pounds.
