Kevin Casey suspended one year for positive steroid test at UFC 175

Representatives of the Nevada Athletic Commission (NAC) voted unanimously on Tuesday to sentence UFC middleweight Kevin Casey to a one-year suspension as a result of his failed drug test at UFC 175.

Casey, 33, tested positive for the anabolic steroid drostanolone in a post-fight drug test following his 61-second TKO victory over Bubba Bush at the event, which took place July 5, 2014 in Las Vegas, Nevada. The fight was Casey’s first inside the UFC following his April 2013 release from the promotion.

In addition to the one-year suspension retroactive to the day of Casey’s failed test, commission officials also fined Casey 35-percent of his fight purse ($5,600), and overturned his win into a no contest.

“When my management got the call from the UFC, I knew that I had to get back on weight asap,” said Casey.

“There’s no excuse for what I did, and I hate to even sit here and try to make an excuse. I’m here to just accept responsibility, move forward, and make that I never have to appear in front of the commission again.”

A former cast member of The Ultimate Fighter 17, Casey (8-3, 1 NC) compiled three consecutive victories over a 11-month span following his initial UFC release last year. The streak culminated in a first-round TKO victory over Andrew Sanchez on June 6, 2014, which awarded Casey the inaugural RFA middleweight championship.
