Kurt Angle has given an update on Brock Lesnar’s UFC future.
WWE’s Kurt Angle thinks fellow wrestler turned successful MMA fighter Brock Lesnar will only return to the UFC to face one man, Jon Jones.
Lesnar (5-3, 1NC) hasn’t fought since defeating Mark Hunt at UFC 200 in July 2016, however that result was changed to a no-contest when Lesnar tested positive for a banned substance. The 42-year old was then suspended for a year by USADA and fined $250,000.
A return for Lesnar did seem likely when he and Daniel Cormier met in the cage after Cormier’s win over Stipe Miocic at UFC 226, but Lesnar never pursued the fight and remained retired.
Talking on The Ariel Helwani MMA Show, Angle said the only fight that would convince Lesnar to return to the UFC Is a matchup with Jones.
“I know he said that he’s retired,” Angle said. ”The one fight he wants, and I don’t know if it’s ever going to happen, but he wants to go up against Jon Jones. (Transcription via MMA Mania)
Following Jones’ win over Cormier at UFC 214, he challenged Lesnar to a fight but was later suspended by USADA for fifteen months after testing positive for turinabol. Since then, Jones has returned and won back his light heavyweight title, defending it this year against Anthony Smith and Thiago Santos.
“I think that would be an extraordinary fight. They are very different,” Angle continued. “Their sizes are completely opposite, but Brock’s a freak. He might not win all of his fights, and he may not be the more polished fighter, but he is an incredible athlete,”
Since Angle’s comments. Jones said on Instagram that Lesnar “doesn’t want the fight” and continued on Twitter by saying “Brock is way too slow, I’ll embarrass him.”
