Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Featherweight sluggers Nate Landwehr vs. Doo Ho Choi will throw down this weekend (Sat., Dec. 7, 2024) at UFC 310 from T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Nobody is going to argue with this match up. “The Train” has really picked up speed since his rough 1-2 UFC start, showing off an improved kickboxing skill set that allows him to really push the pace on opponents. He’s won four of his last five, which could have earned him a step up in competition, but instead, he’ll face a fellow action fighter in South Korea’s Choi. “The Korean Superboy” is a fan favorite because of his offense-first fighting style, which has produced 12 knockout wins. Since returning from his mandatory military service, Choi is unbeaten in two UFC fights.

Let’s take a closer look at the betting odds and strategic keys for each athlete:

How Landwehr Wins

Landwehr’s first couple UFC fights brought us an agent of chaos, a fighter absolutely intent on throwing himself into the fire … for better or worse. He’s still as tough and game as ever, but Landwehr has since developed his technical striking and pushes a more reasonable pace.

This match up is likely to be a car crash. Both men hit very hard, and neither move their head particularly well. The odds of either becoming a defensive savant over a single fight camp are rather low, so in this case, offense is likely to be the best defense. In other words, Choi can’t beat Landwehr’s butt if Landwehr is busy beating his!

To turn a colloquialism into a game plan, Landwehr can dominate this fight by asserting his range as the better kicker and clinch fighter. Hanging back forever flicking kicks doesn’t sound like his style, but crashing forward after his punches to grab a collar-tie and continue wailing away?

“The Train” can manage that.

How Choi Wins

Doo Ho Choi embodies many of the qualities typical to South Korean fighters who make it the UFC roster. Very physical for the division, Choi hits quite hard and is tough as an old shoe. In particular, Choi has an excellent, piston-like 1-2 that has floored many of his previous opponents.

Much of what I wrote about Landwehr applies to Choi as well. He’s not going to suddenly be evasive enough to dance away from Landwehr’s kickboxing, so he might as well really focus on planting that one-two combination on the chin instead. In Choi’s case, he’s trying to keep this fight in the pocket as much as possible rather than end up in the clinch.

I think short exchanges favor Choi’s crispness. As such, it would be wise for “Korean Superboy” to focus on his footwork and feints. If he can feint his way into catching Landwehr off-guard then exit at angle after throwing his shots, he can limit Landwehr’s ability to string together offense and remain in the driver’s seat.

Landwehr vs. Choi Prediction

This match up could go a lot of ways. A quick knockout from either party wouldn’t surprise me, nor would a 15-minute “Fight of the Night” split-decision. Either could even turn up with a surprise bit of wrestling and try to snag rounds that way.

In a fight between two powerful men who clearly have the skills to capitalize upon the other’s weaknesses, I tend to lean towards recent results. Between the two, Landwehr has more consistently been fighting a better level of competition. Despite being the older man, he’s got more momentum behind him and has generally been improving fight-to-fight.

Prediction: Landwehr via knockout
