Last call? Frankie Edgar approaching Max Holloway fight at UFC 218 as final chance to win another title
Former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Lightweight champion Frankie Edgar will have another chance to become a multi-division champion when he faces off against current featherweight kingpin, Max Holloway, in the main event of UFC 218 on Dec. 2, 2017 in Detroit.
Having come up short on two separate occasions, both against Jose Aldo — once at UFC 156 and then UFC 200 — “The Answer” says his window to win the 145-pound strap could be closing, so he’s approaching his title fight against “Blessed” as final opportunity to add another piece of hardware to his mantle.
“Yeah, I mean, I’m a realist and there aren’t too many of these that are going to come up, and this may be the last one,” said Frankie during a recent guest spot on The MMA Hour.
“You never know what happens, but I am trying to make this one a little special, I guess. So I am approaching it like that,” he added.
Some of Edgar’s colleagues, though, don’t agree with Edgar getting yet another title fight, as Cub Swanson stated in the past that Frankie had no right to plead for a shot at another UFC title after dropping his last four championship bouts.
That said, Edgar is using the fact it could be his last invitation to the big dance as extra motivation.
“Anytime you get a little extra motivation, you do it. And what’s more motivating than a title and the fact that this could be the last time I get a title?” he asked. “The title itself is going to be more than enough motivation. But, the fact that these opportunities don’t really arise too much.”
“And I have had my share, so I got to make this one count.”
Indeed, Frankie has had his fair share of title fights, so it’s safe to assume it will be pretty hard to convince UFC officials to give him one more shot at winning gold in two separated divisions should he come up short against “Blessed” in “The Motor City.”
