Derrick Lewis sees no wrong in the two extra punches he dropped on Curtis Blaydes.
Derrick Lewis compiled a four-fight win streak on Saturday by knocking out fellow top five contender Curtis Blaydes inside two rounds. “The Black Beast” landed a right uppercut that put Blaydes to sleep, then followed it up with two more right hand bombs before Herb Dean stepped in to call the fight.
Some may deem those two extra shots to be unnecessary. But for Lewis, he was just doing his job.
“I can’t just turn the switch off just like that. I know some fighters could do that, but I can’t,” Lewis told the media during the UFC Vegas 19 post-fight presser. “I’ve got to wait until the referee pull you off because you never know what happens. Anything can happen. He could turn into Undertaker and sit straight up and eat all those shots.
“You never know. You’ve got to keep going until the referee says, ‘Hey, chill out.’
That explains why Lewis said, “that’s Herb Dean’s fault” right after the fight.
“His corner, his coaches were talking about ‘that was bullsh-t,’” he said. And I was saying, ‘That’s not my fault. That’s Herb Dean’s fault. I’mma keep fighting until the referee pulls you off. And the same thing could’ve happened to me. So I’mma just keep fighting until the referee says stop.”
Lewis also took home a $50,000 bonus for Performance of the Night.
