Two Mexican boxing superstars go head-to-head on Cinco de Mayo weekend!
Tonight (Sat. May 4, 2024), live from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, we’ve got the undisputed super middleweight championship on the line as champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (60-2-2, 39 KO) takes on undefeated Jamie Munguia (43-0, 34 KO). This fight is the culmination of four world titles on the line tonight, starting at 8 p.m. ET.
The leadup to this fight hasn’t been very full of controversial moments, that is until “F***ing **ssy ***hole” promoter Oscar de la Hoya said a few things and Canelo went nuclear on him. De la Hoya now plans to sue for defamation, because of course he is. The fighters themselves have been mostly respectful towards each other, but there’s a decent chance that Alvarez channels this anger towards the DLH proxy in Munguia and looks to make a statement.

CANELO VS. MUNGUIA LIVE PLAY-BY-PLAY:
Canelo Alvarez vs. Jamie Munguia, undisputed super middleweight championship:
Round 1: Alvarez in black, Munguia in white and black. Munguia takes center ring and jabs at “Cinnamon”. Make that a series of jabs. Jabs to the body and the head. Flurry to the gloves by Munguia. Bit of a cheap shot from Munguia as they ref break. Left from Alvarez.
10-9 Munguia
Round 2: Canelo hits a jab. Munguia throwing that jab repeatedly. Right from Munguia, and downstairs. The booth comments that this looks a bit like the Bivol fight early, and they’re not crazy with that comp. Right by Alvarez. Grazing right by Alvarez who dodges the return offering. Canelo 1-2.
10-9 Munguia, 20-18 Munguia
Round 3: Right cross from Munguia. He tosses a nice combination. Rights by both men. I’m not sure if it’s just me, but Alvarez’s punches all look a bit slow. Canelo with a jab. Right hand a few moments later. Munguia counter left. He’s throwing a big combo to end the round to seal the deal. He landed with both hands during that bit.
10-9 Munguia, 30-27 Munguia
Round 4: The Tijuana faithful is getting loud behind their man, who is doing a good job leading one of the best boxers in the world. Munguia with a couple good shots. Alvarez lands a right. Munguia with two good rights. Canelo responds with a right and an uppercut, and THERE’S CANELO! He lands a left-uppercut and Munguia is on the canvas. He looks OK, but he got planted. He survives the round by punching through it.
10-8 Alvarez, 38-37 Munguia
.@Canelo detonates a right uppercut that sends Munguia to the canvas in RD4!

Round 5: Guadalajara fans serenade the arena with Ca-ne-lo chants. Munguia keeps his style true to himself, pressing forward and punching. He’s doing pretty well, but looks like he’s winging it a little more. Right by Munguia, followed by another. They’re trading too fast for me to write each thing down. Good body shot and then a left by Canelo. Munguia landing well, too, but each shot that Alvarez lands looks like it has more of an effect on Munguia than vice versa.
10-9 Alvarez, 47=47
Round 6: Big swing and a miss from Alvarez. Short left hook buckles Munguia’s knees. Canelo to the body, upstairs a few seconds later. Two jabs from him, too. Now a 1-2. Good first half of the round for Canelo. Munguia goes to the well with a big combo, but doesn’t really land it clean. There’s a right hand, however. Munguia with two rights to the breadbasket. Canelo lands a left counter.
10-9 Alvarez, 57-56 Alvarez
Round 7: Rights by both men. Munguia hits a jab. Munguia hits the chest, Alvarez with a nice left to the ribs. Munguia holding his right hand low to cover the body and he eats a clean left. Eats it well, however. Munguia a bit on the back foot now as he ate two good shots. Right by Munguia, counter left by Canelo.
10-9 Alvarez, 67-65 Alvarez
Round 8: Canelo moving forward now. Munguia summoning his fighting spirit and throwing the kitchen sink at Canelo. Alvarez looking to counter, but not really swinging — just letting Munguia hit the gloves. Mostly. There’s a counter finally by Canelo. Munguia pressing forward now and combos on Canelo.
10-9 Munguia, 76-75 Alvarez
Round 9: The commentary booth thinks Munguia is way down and is starting to get desperate. I think he’s closer and could possibly steal some rounds if he goes back to what he did early. They’re mostly standing and trading. Munguia flurrying well, then Alvarez unleashes a nice 1-2. Munguia gets cracked to the body and he doesn’t like that. Munguia pressing well and landing. Canelo reverses, lands a couple. Munguia goes back to being the bull. Good round for both men.
10-9 Munguia, 85-85
Round 10: I must be watching a completely different fight than the booth, because while I think Alvarez is the better boxer, Munguia has taken a lot of rounds on action and volume in my book. Nice right by Munguia, followed by a left. Canelo to the ribs. Munguia responds in kind. Uppercut lands for Alvarez. Left to the body, right upstairs for Canelo. Another good right hand that sprays sweat. Munguia answers back with a combo and lands the left hand of that. 1-2 Canelo.
10-9 Alvarez, 95-94 Alvarez
Round 11: Alvarez lands a couple jabs, but not much else for either man connecting in the first minute. Alvarez lands a left and evades the return fire. They clash heads, but no cuts, fortunately. Counter left for the challenger. Uppercut connects on Munguia. Munguia lands a right. Canelo peppering away as the round ends.
10-9 Alvarez, 105-103 Alvarez
Round 12: Munguia giving it his all right now. They’re throwing and connecting a bunch. Uppercut by the champ. Big left-right from Alvarez. He doesn’t press and might be letting Munguia off the hook a bit here. Canelo body-head. Uppercut. Big night for the old lion.
10-9 Alvarez, 115-112 Alvarez
Final result: Saul “Canelo” Alvarez defeats Jaime Munguia via decision

Mario Barrios vs. Fabian Maidana, WBC interim welterweight championship:
Round 1: Maidana repping the blue and yellow of his favorite soccer team, Bocas, from his home country of Argentina. Barrios countering that with the Aztecas from Mexico and the traditional red, white and green. Maidana with some volume early, but not really landing clean. Barrios flicking out his jab. Good counter right by Barrios. Maidana to the body. Again. Barrios with a jab.
10-9 Maidana
Round 2: They’re slowing the already-slow pace here with a bunch of feints and out-of-range strike attempts. There’s a few jabs by Barrios. One by Maidana back. Barrios continues to use his length. There’s a combo from Maidana. Another nice 6-piece combo by Maidana that might have stolen him the round.
10-9 Maidana, 20-18 Maidana
Round 3: Maidana misses a big swing with his right. Barrios catches Maidana on the ropes and pistons in a right hand that sits Maidana down. Barrios on the attack now. Body-head. Barrios seems to realize that Maidana has recovered and takes his foot off the gas a bit. Maidana throws some punches in bunches to get Barrios off of him for a moment.
10-8 Barrios, 28-28
Round 4: Barrios jabs his way forward. Maidana with a knee-buckling left hook! Barrios looks fine, though. Barrios left to the body and left to the head. Both men land clean left hands. Barrios landing more, but the only real damaging shot of the round was by Maidana.
10-9 Maidana, 38-37 Maidana
Round 5: All of the fights so far have fallen into a mid-round pattern – in this one, it’s Maidana angling to his left along the ropes as Barrios pokes him with long jabs. Three jabs land from the Mexican before Maidana lands a counter left. Cleaner round for Barrios so far, as he hasn’t gotten hit with much at all this stanza.
10-9 Barrios, 47-47
Round 6: Lunging right by the Argentinian hits the ear. Barrios has a bit of a mouse on his right eye. Both men with lefts to the body. Maidana whiffs a big uppercut. Barrios finally unloads a combination, which inspires Maidana to fire back. Announce booth thinks this is a boring fight, and honestly, I think they’re exaggerating here. This is a decent, tactical scrap.
10-9 Barrios, 57-56 Barrios
Round 7: I say that and this fight does continue to plod a bit at a measured pace. Barrios stalking, Maidana countering periodically. Maidana eats a nice one. Double jab lands for Barrios. Maidana to the body. Barrios down and up.
10-9 Barrios, 67-65 Barrios
Round 8: Good body work from Barrios. A left looked like that hurt Maidana a little. He’s looking a hair bit stiff. Another good one a minute later, and again, Maidana doesn’t appear to like that. A right hand from Barrios sprays sweat off Maidana’s head, which inspires him to fire back and land a good right of his own.
10-9 Barrios, 77-74 Barrios
Round 9: Body jab by Barrios. Another one makes Maidana look stiff again. He gets Maidana to stop his feet and lands an uppercut in a small flurry. Barrios lands a right.
10-9 Barrios, 87-83
Round 10: A bit of a plodder right now. Maidana is just looking to land one huge shot, but can’t find it against the savvy veteran. Three jabs from Barrios. Barrios is banking round after round here, but is smartly not over-extending in a manner that would let Maidana back in this fight. Maidana with a right hand, but Barrios wears it just fine.
10-9 Barrios, 97-92
Round 11: More simple action playing out here. Barrios with the jab to the body and the head. 1-2 by Barrios. The announce booth reads out the box stats for Maidana, and they aren’t flattering – he landed three punches all last round.
10-9 Barrios, 107-101
Round 12: Maidana’s corner finally urging some action from their fighter. Maidana gets a right to the side of the torso. Maidana with a counter-right, eats two jabs to the body. Triple jab, right, jab from Barrios. Under a minute to go. Two lefts by Maidana.
10-9 Barrios, 117-110
Final result: Mario Barrios def. Fabian Maidana via decision
Brandon Figueroa vs. Jessie Magdaleno, WBC interim featherweight championship:
Round 1: Big night for Mexican boxing, with multiple fights for championship belts. Magdaleno in green, white and red, Figueroa in black and green. Magdaleno dipping in with body jabs. Nice 1-2 by Figueroa. More body jabs by the shorter Magdaleno. Right-left as well. Clash of heads leads to a cut on the eyelid of Magdaleno. Tough luck for an early cut in a bad spot.
10-9 Magdaleno
Round 2: Magdaleno with a couple of nice uppercuts. Good left by Figueroa. Another one on the break. Slow-paced round here. Lots of little drips and drops, but no big fireworks so far
10-9 Figueroa, 19-19
Round 3: Technical fight by many that thought it was gonna be a rock ‘em sock ‘em slugfest. Ref gives Magdaleno a warning for a low blow. Magdaleno smothering Figueroa’s attempts at combos.
10-10 round, 29-29
Round 4: More warnings to Magdaleno, this time for holding. Figueroa uses this to take the attack and swarm Magdaleno back to the ropes. He gets in a few shots, but Magdaleno lands three nice uppercuts – four. There’s a left by Figueroa. Oof, bad low blow sends Magdaleno crumpled to the canvas in pain. That hit the left side of the cup hard. Ref not really giving Magdaleno a whole lot of time to get back up, but he finally eases off as Magdaleno stretches it out. Hard warning. He’s feeling it going back to the corner.
10-9 Magdaleno, 39-38 Magdaleno
Round 5: Figueroa’s left had has been his money shot all night, and he lands a couple good ones. Magdaleno feints low, then both men crack in rights. Ref barking at Figueroa for a headbutt. Magdaleno to the body, clinches.
10-9 Figueroa, 48-48
Round 6: Rights by both men. A left by Figueroa. Better work by Figueroa as Magdaleno starts to slow a bit. Uppercut and a right. Left-right by Figgy. Magdaleno getting in some shots, but he’s eating way more than he’s serving. Magdaleno stuck on the ropes and losing the volume battle.
10-9 Figueroa, 58-57 Figueroa
Round 7: The announce team makes the point that Magdaleno hasn’t looked at all the same since that mean low blow a few rounds ago, and they aren’t wrong. Figueroa still working on overwhelming Magdaleno with volume. Magdaleno isn’t without some offense, as he finds a home for that uppercut that’s worked well for him on the inside time and time again.
10-9 Figueroa, 68-66 Figueroa
Round 8: A repeat of the past few rounds, as Figueroa keeps pressing forward and into clinches. Good left hands by Figueroa. He’s getting in some decent work downstairs and upstairs in between the time spent dirty boxing. Sweet left to the head and a right to the body by Magdaleno. Closer round.
10-9 Figueroa, 78-75 Figueroa
Round 9: There’s a nice flurry by Magdaleno. Ref talks to Figueroa about too much pushing this time. We’ve ran the gamut of things for this ref to complain about. Some justified, some a bit weird. Jab lands for Magdaleno. Figueroa bullies Magdaleno to the ropes and they stand in a phone booth. Figueroa landing better here. Magdaleno not moving off the ropes at all. He eats a huge body shot at the bell and he’s down for the first time! Magdaleno in pain and he’s not getting up.
Final result: Brandon Figueroa def. Jessie Magdaleno via KO — WATCH HIGHLIGHTS!
