It’s happening: 2021 will produce yet another four-belt champion this evening (Sat., Nov. 6, 2021) when WBC/WBO/WBA “Super” belt collector, Canelo Alvarez, squares off with IBF champ, Caleb Plant, for Super Middleweight supremacy inside MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
MMAmania.com will deliver LIVE coverage of tonight’s main event below. The Showtime pay-per-view (PPV) and FITE TV broadcasts will kickoff at 9 p.m. ET, with Alvarez and Plant likely to make the walk closer to midnight.
Alvarez secured all three of his titles within the last twelve months with wins over unbeaten Callum Smith and Billy Joe Saunders, while Plant has held his since a dominant decision over Jose Uzcategui in Jan. 2019. The pair originally intended to fight in September on Mexican Independence Day weekend, but talks fell apart at the eleventh hour. The card will also see former Super Middleweight champ Anthony Dirrell face Marcos Hernandez, unbeaten former Super Bantamweight champ Rey Vargas make his Featherweight debut against Leonardo Baez, and rising Dominican prospect Elvis Rodriguez take on Juan Pablo Romero.

Round one: Plant working behind the jab to start. Targeting both the head and body. Canelo slowly stalking after him. Clinch halfway through the round. More jabs, chopping right from Canelo in return. Plant moving well, staying busy with the jab. Canelo to the body. Clinch. More jabs from Plant, answers a body shot with a right cross. 10-9 Plant.
Round two: More potshots from Plant, adding right hands to the mix. Canelo left hook falls short, looks for uppercuts in the clinch. Canelo combo misses, Plant 3-2 doesn’t. Sneaky counter uppercut from Plant as well, then a right to the body. Canelo tries a chopping right in the corner. Halfway through the round. Canelo backs him to the ropes and goes low-high with left hooks. Both throw left hooks, jabs land for Canelo. Body shot, Plant answers in kind. Canelo with a solid combination in the corner. More Plant jabs. Double right from Canelo. Closer round, but 10-9, 20-18 Plant.
Round three: Plant continuing to rack up jabs. Canelo’s having some success backing him to the edges of the ring but hasn’t capitalized decisively quite yet. Sneaky uppercut from Plant, Canelo answers to the body. Halfway through. Left hook upstairs for Canelo, right hand downstairs. Solid hooks land for him. Plant landing the jab but having trouble getting away from the ropes. Canelo digs another hook to the body. Plant with a sharp counter right. Both hit the body. Canelo punches out of the clinch. 10-9 Alvarez, 29-28 Plant.
Round four: Corkscrew uppercut lands for Plant. Body shots. Canelo with a left downstairs. They exchange on the ropes, solid shots from Canelo. He fires hooks on the ropes. Plant knocks him back with jabs halfway through the round. Canelo focusing on the body so far. Right cross inside. Canelo hook, Plant cross. Canelo to the body, eats a right downstairs. He’s getting inside with decent regularity. Good hook from Canelo to answer one from Plant. 10-9 Alvarez, 38-38.
Round five: Plant continuing to pump the jab. Alvarez tries a combo, can’t land clean. There’s a body shot as Plant throws. More on the ropes, warned for a low blow. Halfway through the round. Canelo counter left, combination from Plant in return. Canelo digging to the body. Counter right from Plant to answer one from Canelo. Continuing to jab off the back foot. Plant angles off the ropes, leans into a left hook. Man, these are close. 10-9 48-47 Plant.
Round six: Solid combos from Plant to start. Canelo bangs the body in the corner, goes low-high with hooks. Chopping rights inside. Hooks against the ropes, clinch. Plant tries a lead right, eats one inside as he tries to clinch. Canelo rips a three-piece halfway through the round. Nice lead right, then low-high crosses. Another good hook by Canelo. Jabs and crosses. Plant not as busy with the jab this round as Canelo walks him down. He tries some, Canelo slips them. 10-9 Alvarez, 57-57.
Round seven: Plant back on his bike, clinch. Canelo puts him in the corner and fires combinations, landing a hard hook upstairs. Continuing to advance. Clinch. Good lead hook. Plant lands a nice counter right halfway through the round, only to eat left hooks in return. Looking to land on the ropes. Canelo sitting against them and letting him prod with jabs. Hook from Canelo, clash of heads. Plant counter right, eats a body shot. nice three-piece from Canelo at the bell. Better round for Plant, but 10-9, 67-66 Alvarez.
Round eight: Canelo fires a series of left hooks inside. 1-2 behind them, body shot, clinch. Clinch. Canelo with another combination in the corner, no clean connections. Plant with a right downstairs, then a clean left hook halfway through the round. Alvarez left hook, clinch. Plant to the body. Again with a 1-2. Canelo whiffs against the ropes, lands the next sequence. Stiff jab and left hook land for him. Clinch. These are almost all swing rounds. 10-9, 77-75 Alvarez.
Round nine: More of the same, Plant circling and firing the jab as Canelo tries to close the distance. Right to the body from Canelo, more body shots, uppercut upstairs. Left hook in the corner. Halfway through the round. Canelo keeping him near the ropes. Some technical difficulties ensue; based on what I did manage to see, 10-9, 87-84 Alvarez.
Round ten: We’ll start a minute in. Low-high left hooks from Canelo. Plant answers with his own body blow, continues to land jabs. Canelo tries a 1-2-3. Right hands to the body. Heavy hook inside, Plant answers with his own body shots. Sharp uppercuts from Canelo, more body work. Plant tries to shoeshine before the bell. 10-9, 97-93 Alvarez.
Round eleven: Canelo continuing to pressure, lands solid hooks. Suddenly, a vicious left hook and follow-up pair uppercuts send Plant to the canvas against the ropes. He somehow manages to beat the count but Canelo’s back on the attack. Big left hook and Plant’s legs are gone. Canelo pours it on and as Plant goes down a second time, referee Russell Mora steps in to intervene. Canelo Alvarez is the undisputed super middleweight champion of the world.
Final result: Alvarez def. Plant by TKO
