It’ll be the third UFC event in ten days, but it’s also something of a crescendo as arguably the best pound-for-pound fighter in mixed martial arts, UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones, returns to action to face off against Glover Teixeira at UFC 172 this Saturday.
The bout has all sorts of implications for Jones’ career, his standing among all the best in the sport and what’s next for the future of the light heavyweight division. The rest of the card has some interesting bouts, but nothing even comes close to the significance of the main event, which is also true for the UFC. Has Jones been marketed to his full potential? In a year where headliners are lacking, would a loss to the relatively unknown (to casuals) Teixeira be a devastating blow?
We’ll discuss all of the ins and outs of this weekend’s card plus look back on UFC on FOX 11. The event from Orlando, Florida had everything a hardcore fan could want, but not much to interest the casual observer. For a card so stacked that delivered so much (and sold well at the gate), why did it pull the lowest ratings to date for a UFC event on FOX?
Last, but not least, Bellator’s season continues on Friday with Bellator 118, a card featuring a bantamweight title bout between Eduardo Dantas and Joe Warren.
There’s a lot going on, so join me today to discuss all of this and more. In terms of today’s chat, anything is up for discussion, but I will lead with this and it all kicks off at 1 p.m. ET.
