Jorge Masvidal’s Gamebred Boxing returns to pay-per-view (PPV) tonight (Sat., April 1, 2023) with a profoundly eclectic lineup, at the top of which sits a clash between the legendary Roy Jones Jr. and former World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC)/Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) champion, Anthony “Showtime” Pettis.

Two grudge matches bolster the PPV main card, one of which sees Jose Aldo and Jeremy Stephens run it back after “Scarface’s” infamous body shot and the other of which pits freak show boxing regular, Vitor Belfort, against one-time conqueror, Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza. Round two: Jones letting the jab go a bit more this round. Counter right from Pettis. Combination bounces off the guard. More combination work from Pettis, landing to the body. Halfway through. Trading jabs. Good left hook downstairs by Pettis. More body shots piling up. Jones just not throwing nearly enough so far. More body work by Pettis. There’s a good 1-2 from Jones, his best connection of the fight. 10-9, 20-18 Pettis.

Round three: Jab battle early on. Pettis still targeting the body. Jones tries a leaping left hook. Pettis backs him to the corner and fires a combination. Jones still mostly leaning on the jab, which is still faster than Pettis’. Quick lead right from Jones, who commits to some power shots before getting clinched. Body shot connects. Clinch. Pettis with some more body shots in the final seconds. 10-9, 30-27 Pettis.

Round four: Pettis is doing well when he can pressure and is largely outworking Jones, who’s not landing a lot outside of his jab. Pettis combo bounces off the gloves. Solid body shot and 1-2. 1-2 from Jones halfway through. Jones now doing the advancing and throwing some heavy shots. Good connections to the body and head until Pettis ties up. Cruiserweight: Vitor Belfort vs. Ronaldo Souza

Round one: Tentative start, both men just checking each other’s lead hands. Right hook lands for Belfort. Souza looks for his own big rights. Quick straight left lands for Belfort halfway through. Counter left catches Souza coming in. Still fairly slow for the most part. Left from Belfort in the waning seconds. 10-9 Belfort.

Round two: Souza wades into the clinch. Solid right cross by Souza met by a straight left. Souza advancing behind right hands and they’re trading in the corner. Hard body shots from Souza met by a left hand. Heavy pressure from Souza. Clinch, then another. Another halfway through. Souza digs to the body, clinch. Another right to the body. Belfort tries to open up, gets clinched. Short punches by Souza. Solid exchanges, Souza clinching whenever Belfort starts to get going. Souza body shot, Belfort straight left. Souza slips at the bell. 10-9 Souza, 19-19.

Round three: Belfort gets on the front foot early. Souza goes down to a 1-2 as they trade, though he beats the count and looks steady. Souza to the body. Hard straight left by Belfort inside and Souza wobbles back. Belfort doesn’t initially jump on him, maybe expecting him to drop, but goes on the attack halfway through. Souza surviving with clinches. Hard uppercut by Belfort met by a counter right. Clinch. Belfort continuing to wade in and he floors Souza against the ropes. Again. Souza makes it to his feet. Belfort unloading. Souza comes back with a body shot, trying to hit and smother. 10-7, 29-26 Belfort.

Round four: Early left by Belfort. Souza again trying to smother him. Solid straight right, looking to do damage inside. Solid body shots, now on the front foot. Counter from Belfort against the ropes. Good exchange, clinch. Halfway through. Trading at close range. Souza doing some solid work at close range. Two good lefts from Belfort on the exit. Back to the clinch, Souza doing work to the head and body. More point-blank exchanges. 10-9 Souza, 38-36 Belfort.

Round five: Clubbing shots from Souza, walking Belfort down. He’s doing a good job of being physical and not giving Belfort room to let his hands go. As I type that, Belfort cracks him with a good straight left. More inside work from Souza. Halfway through. Both land left hands. Overhand from Souza met by a flurry from Belfort and Jacare nearly slips through the ropes. Souza goes right back to bullying. Belfort landing some solid shots off the back foot. 10-9 Souza, 47-46 Belfort.

Round six: Trading at close range. Souza still working to smother and chisel away inside. Good flurry by Souza, Belfort firing back. Nice left hand by Souza, but Belfort cracks him with a series of hard 1-2s. Just as Souza’s reeling back, he blasts Belfort with a counter right that sends him stumbling. Clinch. 1-2 from Belfort halfway through. Straight left kicks off a combo and now Souza’s reeling. Clinch. Souza comes back with a flurry, clinch. More inside work from Souza. Clubbing right met by a 3-2 from Belfort. Souza 1-2 into the clinch. 10-9 Souza, 56-56. I’ll admit to maybe being a bit generous.

Welterweight: Jose Aldo vs. Jeremy Stephens

Round one: Stephens pushing forward to start, working behind the jab. Solid body shots. Aldo keeping a high guard, sneaking in his own jabs. Counter right from Aldo, whose jab is picking up steam. Halfway through. 1-2 from Aldo, who started a bit slow but is looking sharper than an unusually composed Stephens. That jab’s doing work. Stephens absorbs a combo on his guard. Overhand right lands for him at the bell. 10-9 Aldo.

Round two: Stephens letting the right hand go early, lands one to the body. Quick exchange inside. Stephens body shot, Aldo uppercut inside. Nice liver shot from Aldo. Hard 1-1-2 and an uppercut behind it. Stephens looks for his own uppercut halfway through. Hard 3-2 from Aldo backs Stephens off. 1-2 down the middle. Body shots, Stephens tries to answer in kind. Harder body shot from Aldo. Body shot to 1-2. He’s found his groove. 10-9, 20-18 Aldo.

Round three: Stephens struggling to get through Aldo’s guard, while Aldo appears to have gotten comfortable. Heavy combination lands for Aldo, who tries to follow up to the body. Left hook upstairs. Stephens tries to come back, can’t land clean. He wades in with half-committal volume. Double right from Stephens, then another solid straight as they separate. Short right. Aldo whiffs on a left hook, rolls with an overhand. Stephens staying busy this round instead of loading up and it’s really working for him. Nice combinations. Aldo cracks him with a left hook in the waning seconds. 10-9 Stephens, 29-28 Aldo.

Round four: Stephens starting to outwork Aldo, finding the mark with a good number of punches as Aldo picks his shots. Left hook from Aldo, got return from Stephens. Overhand right from Stephens around the guard. Aldo to the body. Halfway through. Sharp counter right from Aldo after a good sequence from Stephens. Stephens absorbs a left hook, then an uppercut and straight right. Stephens goes low-high. Aldo body shot and counter right; he seems to be picking it back up. They trade short rights, left hook from Aldo behind it. Big combo from Aldo met by a heavy right cross. 10-9, 39-37 Aldo.

Round five: Aldo a little more mobile, looking to counter. Hard three-piece inside that Stephens answers with a series of jabs. Aldo 1-2, short punches from Stephens. Long sequence of arm punches from Stephens. Aldo slings some straight rights in return. Halfway through. Trading jabs. 1-2 from Aldo. They exchange at close range. Stephens bangs the body to good effect. Letting his hands go at close range. Aldo swats him with a quick overhand, then a pair of left hooks before the bell. 10-9 Stephens, 48-47 Aldo.

Round six: Trading in the center to start the round. Both fire lengthy flurries that bounce off the other’s guard. Straight right by Stephens. Another flurry by Aldo that hits mostly forearm. Aldo uppercut, Stephens body shots. Stephens staying busy, finding the mark with short shots. Halfway through. Trading in the corner, both land well. More short arm punches. Both connect with heavy rights. Aldo stalking, firing rights. Good shot from him, Stephens answers with arm punches. Heavy rights by Aldo. They end the fight trading heat. 10-9 Stephens, 57-57. Wouldn’t argue either way.
