We’ve purchased the Showtime pay-per-view (PPV) and with it our dynamic tag team duo, Matt Ryan and Brendan Sokler, will deliver the best possible ‘radio style’ play-by-play broadcast imaginable throughout the “Mayweather vs. Paul”-led main card, starting at 8 p.m. ET in the video player below!
I will admit that the Showtime pay-per-view (PPV) boxing “fight” tonight (Sun., June 6, 2021) between the greatest boxer of his generation, Floyd Mayweather (50-0), against a 26-year-old YouTube content creator, Logan Paul (0-1) is going to be fun.
I cannot lie and say this is the worst thing ever to happen to boxing or combat sports because I can think of at least 10 ideas worse than this fight.
But, it is weird that within the span of two years we’ve seen the Paul Brothers — subjects of scorn, acrimony, infamy, and a documentary series trying to pinpoint if either one is a sociopath — have become the saving grace of professional boxing.
Sure, they’re fighting mostly over-the-hill athletes and fellow YouTubers to instill a fake level of credibility to try and get Generation Z to watch and buy into boxing because it still governed by the same wild west bulls—t that kept Jack Johnson, Muhammad Ali and many other stars over the past century from expressing themselves (or even fighting).
Something Dana White has taken copious notes on I might add.
Then we have Mayweather, a man who has made a living on getting his (and only his), while his mentees languish in his shadow the same way Owen Hart did Bret Hart. Once again, Mayweather will venture out from his home to fight someone not on his level, which was the case for nearly every fight of his since 2010.
It started with his clash with Manny Pacquiao, a fight that was the prom queen fantasy of every fight nerd fan since the early 2000s. But, much like when you see the prom queen 10 years later on Facebook or even worse at Target with her snotty kids chasing each other through aisles while she looks at shirts with “wine mom” on it, you realize the fantasy is way better than the reality.
With him being a few years removed from embarrassing Tenshin Nasukawa for RIZIN (watch it), Mayweather’s act comes to Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, Fla., for a fight with Logan Paul a stone’s throw away from one of the greatest and most controversial fights of all time, Alexis Arguello and Aaron Pryor that was mired in its own controversy.
Will this card be a total circus? Yes, obviously. Do you think I’d sacrifice my Sunday evening gardening for some run-of-the-mill jabroni fight? No, sir.
So strap in and join me Brendan Sokler, our moderator Stephanie Sottile and the newest member of the ball club, Shakiel Mahjouri, as we entertain you through the boxing equivalent to the Circus Circus scene from “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.”
Remember that MMAmania.com will deliver LIVE coverage of tonight’s main card right here, starting with the Showtime PPV broadcast at 8 p.m. ET.
