Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) returns to the pay-per-view (PPV) market with its UFC 230 mixed martial arts (MMA) event, headlined by the heavyweight championship showdown pitting reigning division kingpin, Daniel Cormier, opposite hulking division power puncher, Derrick Lewis. In the UFC 230 co-headliner, which goes down TONIGHT (Sat., Nov. 3, 2018) inside Madison Square Garden in New York City, former UFC middleweight champion, Chris Weidman, tries to work his way back to a title shot opposite dangerous Brazilian submission specialist, Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza. Elsewhere on the card, 185-pound striking phenom, Israel Adesanya, continues his march toward the middleweight title against longtime veteran standout Derek Brunson. And let’s not forget the FOX Sports 1 and UFC Fight Pass preliminary cards, featuring such recognizable names as Roxanne Modafferi and Ben Saunders, among others. Not bad for an injury-ridden card cobbled together at the last minute!

Round 1: Souza on the front foot to start. Low kick lands. Jab from Weidman. Lead right from Souza. One minute in. Hard knee from Weidman, who eats a pair of uppercuts. Souza whiffs on a pair of long rights. Weidman with some nice combos and stings Souza with a right hand around the guard. Souza fires back with his own overhand. Body shot connects, then a short right hand. Souza low kick met by a left hook. Two minutes to go.

Leg kick by Souza. Weidman staying busy with his jab. 1-2, uppercut, glancing hook. One minute to go. Leg kick from Souza. Weidman continuing to find success with his left hand, but eats a pair of nasty liver shots. Simultaneous impact. 10-9 Weidman.

Round 2: Low kick from Souza to start, answered by Weidman. Weidman with a crisp combo that’s met by a right hand. Leg kick. Hard right to the body by Weidman. One minute in. Knee from Souza and a counter right off a Weidman knee. Left hands inside from the Brazilians and a hard leg kick. Souza’s slugging. Cross counter, left hook, body shot. Another cross counter and they trade knees inside. Weidman cracks him with a hard right around the guard and starts stalking. Souza to the body. Heavy left hook upstairs. Cross counter. Weidman gets him down, but Souza rolls through and just grazes his head with a murderous uppercut. 10-9 Souza.

Round 3: Leg kick from Souza. Weidman with a straight right and body kick. Souza rips the body once again and a hard leg kick. Cross counter and a hard knee. Souza landing some brutal punches. Weidman somehow eats them all. Weidman goes back to his jab, lands a good knee. One minute in. Short legs and an overhand form Souza. Weidman with a clinch uppercut and a hard elbow and now he’s on the attack. Souza with a front kick downstairs. Souza lands a cross counter. Body kick connects. Two minutes in . Souza with another front kick. Hard flurry of punches, brutal left hook. Heavy right hand on the break and suddenly another right hand destroys Weidman! Souza stops striking the clearly out Weidman, but Dan Miragliotta insists he keep going, so he hammerfists a 99% unconscious Weidman into oblivion.

185 lbs.: David Branch vs. Jared Cannonier

Round 1: Cannonier opens with a low kick, then gets taken down by a blasth double. Cannonier scrambles up, lands some borderline Browne elbows, then stands again after another takedown. Knee and right hand from Cannonier. They separate a minute in. Jabs from Branch. Another takedown from Branch on the cage. Looking for the back. Two minutes in. Cannonier ultimately works his way back to his feet. Elbow from Cannonier on the break. Two minutes to go.

Branch shoots from too far out, denied. Good jabs landing for him. Leg kick. Branch shoots once again. One minute to go. Cannonier uses the switch to stay up. Cannonier separates, forces him back with strikes, denies an outside reap at the bell. 10-9 Branch.

Round 2: Hard low kick from Cannonier and both swing big. Branch shoots, denied, gets dropped by a right hand. Brutal punches from Cannonier and he pull soff the upset.

185 lbs.: Jack Marshman vs. Karl Roberson

Round 1: Roberson fires an early head kick. Straight left connects, then another. Roberson ties up and takes him to the fence. Left hook and uppercut on the break a minute in. Counter left lands for him, then a clean one on the lead. Low kick. Marshman throwing, but yet to connect. Two minutes in. Low kick from Marshman, who counters a body kick with a left hand. Marshman low kick, Roberson body kick, then a heavy left hand. Both hurling heat. Two minutes to go.

Body kick from Roberson. Snap kick downstairs. Inside low kick, looping left. One minute to go. Marshman lands a hook downstairs. Roberson looks for a haed kick. Another nice body shot from Marshman. Body kick from Roberson. 10-9 Roberson.

Round 2: Straight left lands for Roberson. Marshman uncorks a long flurry in return. 1-2 knocks Marshman back a minute in. Marshman comes back with a body shot. Roberson straight left. Head kick attempt. Another hard straight left. Marshman connects with a right cross inside. Two minutes in. Counter left from Roberson as Marshman tries to open up, then hits a lovely takedown into side control. Two minutes to go.

Round 3: Early counter left and low kick from Roberson. One minute in. Head kick attempt. BIG counter left, maybe the hardest one yet, and Marshman again eats it without trouble. Yet another left. Another. Marshman’s spitting out blood. Two minutes in. There it is again. He’s picking Marshman off over and over. Now he hits another takedown into side control. Two minutes to go.

Short elbows from Roberson, who threatens an americana. Full mount with a minute to work. Short shots. Some bigger elbows before the bell. 10-9 Roberson.

185 lbs.: Israel Adesanya vs. Derek Brunson

Round 1: Brunson shoots right away, muscling his way into double underhooks. He takes Brunson to the fence, but blatantly grabs Adesanya’s shorts, leading them to restart in the center. Another long-range shot from Brunson and Adesanya limp-legs out, only to get grabbed and put on the fence again. Two minutes in. Brunson lands a hard left hand on the break, then ties up again. Adesanya again slips free. Straight right from Adesanya lands. Two minutes to go.

Adesanya denies a takedown. Brunson charges with left hands. Another denied shot. Adesanya tries a Brazilian kick. Brunson shoots again, takes him to the fence. One minute to go. Brunson drives further, gets sprawled on. Nasty intercepting knee from Adesanya and he’s on the attack. A knee drops Brunson and Adesanya is all over him. Brazilian kick and right hand drop Brunson again. A third time, then a fourth time and in comes the ref.

Final result: Adesanya def. Brunson by TKO (punches)


145 lbs.: Jason Knight vs. Jordan Rinaldi

Round 1: Knight lands a straight left and low kick right away. Rinaldi ties up, eats a right on the break. Big left hook by Rinaldi off a Knight low kick. Head kick from Rinaldi, who hits a takedown and moves to side control. One minute in. Knight regains guard. Rinaldi scoots him to the fence and postures out of a potential armbar/triangle attempt. Knight gets to his feet, dumped back down. Two minutes in. Knight gets mission control. Rinaldi pulls his arm out of an omoplata and moves to half guard. Two minutes to go.

Back to guard. Short punches from Rinaldi. Nice elbow. Knight with a body triangle. Rinaldi moves to half guard with a minute to go. Guard again, more shots from Rinaldi. 10-9 Rinaldi.

Round 2: Short counter right from Knight. He’s still pushing forward, just not landing. Rinaldi hits an easy takedown and moves to side control a minute in. Rinaldi swiftly moves to the back and locks up a body triangle. Two minutes in. Good control from Rinaldi, alternating sides on the body triangle. Two minutes to go.

Knight’s wrist control is working, but he can’t get Rinaldi off of him. One minute to go. Rinaldi gets close on a choke attempt, not quite there. 10-9 Rinaldi.

Round 3: Knight threatening the uppercut early. He stuffs a takedown. One minute in. Good leg kick from Knight and he looks to transition to the back. Rinaldi latches onto a kimura and sweeps into top position. One hook in now. Full body triangle. Now it’s back to the hand fighting. Rinaldi again nearly secures the choke. Short right hands. Two minutes to go.

Still more hand fighting. Knight rolls to his knees, then stands and slams Rinaldi to the mat. Rinaldi absorbs it and maintains position. He stays there until the bell. 10-9 Rinaldi.

Final result: Rinaldi def. Knight by unanimous decision


125 lbs.: Roxanne Modafferi vs. Sijara Eubanks

Round 1: Low kick and punches from Eubanks. Modafferi looks for counters. Low-high flurry from Eubanks. Clean 1-2, hooks around the guard. Modafferi lands a lead right a minute in. Plenty of volume from Eubanks, and it doesn’t look like Modafferi’s punches are having any impact on her. Eubanks hits a single-leg near the fence. Full guard two minutes in. Modafferi trying to stay busy with her legs, working her guard high and firing upkicks. Brief flicker of an armbar. Two minutes to go.

Eubanks stands over her, tries a knee-cut, and takes Modafferi down again when she tries to rise. One minute to go. Hammerfists from Eubanks. Side control, then hammerfists when Modafferi tries to turn to her knees. 10-9 Eubanks.

Round 2: Eubanks still the more aggressive of the two on her feet. Right hands land for Modafferi. Nice counters from Roxy. One minute in. Eubanks lands a body shot. Now Modafferi putting together more volume. Eubanks answers with a head kick that wobbles Modafferi, then a right hook that sends her to the ground. Modafferi looking for a leg two minutes in. Eubanks gets her leg free and lets her up. Modafferi goes back to punching and shoots, absorbing a knee. Two minutes to go.

Eubanks gets double underhooks, but it’s Modafferi hitting a throw to land in half guard. Modafferi working to pass as Eubanks holds her close. Eubanks looking for a kimura. She nearly manages to sweep Modafferi, but cannot do so. 10-9 Eubanks for the knockdown.

Round 3: Now it’s Modafferi pressuring. Both landing in the center. Good right hand by Modafferi. One minute in. Modafferi shoots, stuffed. Right hand and elbow land for her. Knee from Eubanks inside. Two minutes in. They trade right hands in the center. Harder right from Eubanks. Modafferi shoots, taken down into half guard. Two minutes to go.

Modafferi regains guard and nearly sweeps. One minute to go. Now she goes to her knees and stands, eating shots along the way. A slow scramble ensies and Eubanks looks for a kimura. 10-9 Eubanks.

Final result: Eubanks def. Modafferi by unanimous decision


145 lbs.: Julio Arce vs. Sheymon Moraes

Round 1: Arce looking for punching combinations early. He gets a little too aggressive, though, and gets floored by a straight right. Moraes stands over him and blasts away as Arce looks for a leg. One minute in. Arce manages to scramble to his feet and put Moraes on the fence. Two minutes in. Jockeying for position. Nice knee to the body fro mMoraes. Arce gets a body lock and fights for an outside trip. e moves to the rear waist lock and jumps onto Moraes’ back. Two minutes to go.

Arce nearly gets the choke in. Still fighting for it. One minute to go. Arce still fighting for it, looking for chokes and cranks as needed. Moraes makes it to the bell. 10-9 Arce.

Round 2: Moraes comes out aggressively, but it’s Arce hitting another takedown. Moraes pops up and they’re back on teh fence. Moraes reverses psition and lands a hard elbow. Knee downstairs. More knees. Arce reverses but he is spewing blood a minute in. They separate and Moraes pursues. Arce looking to counter. Two minutes in. Moraes still steadily advancing as they trade. Two minutes to go.

Going back-and-forth with long punches. Moraes claims an eye poke. Soon after, Moraes drops Arce with that same right hand and stands over him, dropping big blows. He lets Arce up. 1-2 lands for Arce. They trade inside and Moraes ties up. 10-9 Moraes

Round 3: Body kick connects for Arce. Moraes body kick and right hand as Arce presses in. One minute in. Elbow lands for Moraes, who catches a kick. Christ, that’s a lot of blood. Head kick catches Moraes leaning. Another high kick. Two minutes in. Lead left lands for Arce. They tie up in the center. Good knee and elbow by the Brazilian on the break. Head kick connects for Moraes. Two minutes to go.

Arce pressuring, lands punches. Arce tries a front kick that’s caught. Counter right from Moraes just misses, left hook lands for Arce. Body shot and right hook upstairs. One minute to go. Knee to the body by Moraes. Knee from Moraes, elbow upstairs. 10-9 Arce.

170 lbs.: Ben Saunders vs. Lyman Good

Round 1: Low kick from Good to start things off, then a high kick attempt. Body kick from Saunders in return. Good targeting the lead leg. Straight left buzzes Good, who eats a body kick a minute in. Flurry of knees to the body from Saunders in the clinch. Good fires a series of uppercuts amid the onslaught and one of them lands right on the button. Saunders crumples and Good polishes him off with hammerfists.

155 lbs.: Matt Frevola vs. Lando Vannata

Round 1: Frevola tries a head kick, lands a left hook as Vannata kicks in return. Vannata threatens a wheel kick. Frevola tries to blitz him. Head kicks from Frevola, right hand exchange. One minute in. Vannata threatens a takedown, then blasts Frevola with a head kick after dropping the leg. Frevola drops, but quickly rises and shoots in. Vannata denies it, eats a body kick soon after. Another wheel kick attempt. 3-2 from Vannata two minutes in. Frevola comes back with a straight right. Clean straight right and left hook counter Vannata’s low kicks. Body kick lands. Vannata fires a head kick and lands punches behind it. Two minutes to go.

Frevola pops him with a jab, then grazes him with a wheel kick. Vannata fires another naked low kick and gets stumbled by a right hand. Body kick by Frevola. Vannata ducks in for a single-leg and nearly lands that same head kick again. One minute to go. Counter elbow from Frevola this time. Vannata wheel kick goes high and Frevola stings him with a left hook. He chases and lands a knee to counter a takedown. Frevola counters a takedown, pulls guard on a guillotine, and uses it to sweep to mount. 10-9 Frevola.

Round 2: Frevola looks to spin, Vannata does the same. Low kick from Frevola. Good right hand and teep to the face from Vannata. Body kick connects. Two right hands and Frevola slumps. He works his way back to his feet and tries to throw back. Vannata stalking, potshotting on the fence. Liver shot and overhand right. Frevola shoots in, can’t get it. Clean straight right from Vannata two minutes in. Knee from Frevola. Vannata digs a pair of body shots, wheel kick bounces off Frevola’s cheek. Frevola lands a body kick. Two minutes to go.

Vannata goes low-high with kicks. More leg kicks by Frevola. Clean hook by Vannata. Frevola cracks him with one of his own. They tie up and Vannata lands a right on the break. One minute to go. 2-1 and wheel kick attempt from Vannata, who avoids a spinning back fist. Frevola shoots, stuffed, nearly eats a head kick. Another shot and Vannata counters with a guillotine attempt. 10-9 Vannata.

Round 3: Frevola tossing out kicks, knocks Vannata’s mouthpiece out with a jab. Vannata tries a head kick. Frevola with a right downstairs. One minute in. Vannata catches a knee, can’t use it. Lead right by Frevola. Vannata catches a body kick, only to get blasted with punches by a one-legged Frevola. He completes the takedown, can’t keep him down. Leg kick exchange, counter right by Frevola. Another right lands for him. Vannata tries to spin tow minutes in. Leg kicks from Frevola. Both land right crosses. Vannata connects with a left hook and low kick. Two minutes to go.

Vannata body kick and right hand. Wheel kick just misses. He fakes a takedown and lands an uppercut. Frevola takes Vannata down, Vannata uses a granby roll to stand. Frevola head kick whizzes by Vannata’s head. Trading on the fence. Frevola with a combination, then another. 10-9 Frevola.

145 lbs.: Shane Burgos vs. Kurt Holobaugh

Round 1: Holobaugh immediately opens with leg kicks. Burgos checking them, eats an uppercut and 1-2. Another low kick. Chopping right by Burgos, jab upstairs. Holobaugh low kick and they trade lefts. One minute in. Good exchange in the center. 1-2 from Holobaugh. Jab and teep come back at him. Left hooks from Holobaugh. Both land jabs and suddenly Holobaugh floors Burgos with a left hook. As soon as Holobaugh follows him down, though, Burgos locks up a vicious armbar to secure a comeback victory.

Final result: Burgos def. Holobaugh by submission (armbar)

265 lbs.: Marcos Rogerio de Lima vs. Adam Wieczorek

Round 1: de Lima opens with a leg kick, marching forward. Wieczorek tries a front kick, then secures a body lock for a takedown into guard. On to half guard. One minute in. Wieczorek looking to isolate an arm. de Lima scrambles up when Wieczorek tries to pass and takes him down in return, taking half guard. Staying tight so far, occasionally looking to set up an arm triangle. Two minutes to go.

Not much ground-and-pound coming from the Brazilian. One minute to go. Now a couple of right hands. He postures up for a few more good blows. 10-9 de Lima.

Round 2: Again de Lima opens with low kicks, then a hard punching combination. Wieczorek goes for that same bodylock takedown and de Lima puts him on the fence. One minute in. de Lima with an elbow on the break. Another hard low kick. Again. Wieczorek ties up and takes him to the fence two minutes in. de Lima reverses position, looks for an outside trip before they separate. Two minutes to go.

Another heavy low kick. 3-2 follows and he ties up. Ref breaks them up. de Lima denies another takedown. Leg kick connects, then a left hook. Wieczorek looks exhausted. He shoots and de Lima grabs a front headlock as he’s placed on the fence. Double underhooks for the Pole. de Lima unloads on the break. 10-9 de Lima.

Round 3: Right back to the leg kick. de Lima easily thwarts a takedown and puts him on the fence. He takes Wieczorek down into side control a minute in. A minute later and he’s in mount, after which Wieczorek scrambles to his feet. The Pole falls from a blocked shot and de Lima lands in guard. Two minutes to go.

Ref stands them up. Low kick from Wieczorek, who steps in with a knee. One minute to go. de Lima gets double underhooks for an easy takedown. He ends the fight on top in guard. 10-9 de Lima.

Final result: de Lima def. Wieczorek by unanimous decision
