Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) is locked and loaded for UFC Vegas 28 this Sat. night (June 5, 2021) on ESPN+ from inside UFC APEX in Las Vegas, Nevada. Headlining duties fall to heavyweight hurters Jairzinho Rozenstruik and Augusto Sakai, who collide for a spot in the 265-pound title chase. Shortly before that hard-hitting affair gets underway, fellow heavyweight bruisers Walt Harris and Marcin Tybura go to war for division bragging rights.

265 lbs.: Jairzinho Rozenstruik vs. Augusto Sakai

Round 1: Rozenstruik takes the center. One minute in. Sakai lands leg kicks. Rozenstruik falling short with his shots so far. Two minutes in. Rozenstruik body shot. Counter right lands for him with two minutes to go.

Mostly just feints from both men so far. Both whiff with a minute to go. Good combination on the fence for Rozenstruik. Inside low kick, then he bursts in with a combination against the fence, flooring Sakai with a brutal right hand behind the ear and turning the lights out with follow-up shots.

Final result: Rozenstruik def. Sakai by KO (punches)


265 lbs.: Walt Harris vs. Marcin Tybura

Round 1: Trading punches early, Harris mixing in some kicks as well. Spinning back fist lands for him, then a hard 3-2. Harris opening up on the fence. Tybura clinches, can’t get anything going. One minute in. Big 3-2 hurts Tybura, who takes Harris down as the latter tries to open up in the Thai clinch. Harris pops back up against the fence. He punches his way out of the clinch two minutes in. Body kick from Tybura, who catches a kick for a takedown into side control. Harris tries to scramble up and Tybura takes his back, chipping away with short punches with two minutes to go.

Tybura gets the other hook in and ramps up the ground-and-pound until the referee steps in.

Final result: Tybura def. Harris by TKO (punches)


185 lbs.: Roman Dolidze vs. Laureano Staropoli

Round 1: Hard leg kicks from Staropoli, who gets taken down with a double-leg for his trouble. Staropoli using the fence to stand a minute in. Dolidze staying attached, grinding against the side of the cage. Two minutes in. Dolidze not getting a lot done in the clinch but Staropoli can’t get away. Two minutes to go.

He drags Staropoli to his knees, then Staropoli scoots back to the fence. Staropoli trying a kimura grip with a minute to go. They break right before the bell. 10-9 Dolidze.

Round 2: Dolidze hits a double-leg in the opening seconds. Staropoli once again scoots to the fence and stands, once gain can’t get away. Back down, back up a minute in. now he manages to separate. Aggressive combo for Staropoli, who slips and eats a 1-2 on the way up. Two minutes in. Hard short uppercut by Dolidze, who eats a heavy left hook in return. Dolidze shoots and puts him on his seat against the fence. Back to that same clinch. Two minutes to go.

Staropoli manages to hit his own trip with a minute to go. Dolidze threatens a leg, then stands. He puts Staropoli on the fence yet again, then they separate at the bell. 10-9 Dolidze.

Round 3: Staropoli going right back to the kicks. One minute in. Doing well for himself on the feet, at least until he overextends on a 1-2 and Dolidze puts him on the fence again two minutes in. Staropoli grabs a front headlock and manages to force Dolidze to his knees with two minutes to go.

He loses the grip, looks for the switch when Dolidze shoots back in. Heavy right hand by Dolidze after getting a bit of space. Staropoli hits his own takedown, landing from top turtle, then stands over Dolidze. He lets the Georgian up with a minute to go. Dolidze puts him right back against the fence. They separate before the bell. 10-9 Dolidze.

Final result: Dolidze def. Staropoli by unanimous decision


170 lbs.: Miguel Baeza vs. Santiago Ponzinibbio

Round 1: Ponzinibbio pressing forward, lands jabs against the fence. Low kicks from Baeza. One minute in. More Baeza leg kicks. 3-2s falling short. Two minutes in. They trade low kicks, right from Baeza as Ponzinibbio pops back up. More leg kicks. Good uppercut on the fence. Two minutes to go.

Ponzinibbio looks for 1-2s. Still absorbing leg kicks. Baeza 1-2, then a head kick that makes Ponzinibbio slip for a moment. Left hook from Ponzinibbio, then a hard 1-2 comes back at him. One minute to go. Baeza continuing to attack the lead leg and block most of Ponzinibbio’s punches. Ponzinibbio tries a late blitz, lands a good left hook. 10-9 Baeza.

Round 2: Baeza still tearing up the leg after Ponzinibbio tries an early blitz. Front kicks downstairs. More low kicks, then a 1-2 that stings Ponzinibbio. Low kick and body shots. Ponzinibbio shoots, denied. More Baeza low kicks. Pozinibbio tries a combo on the fence, advancing behind the jab. Good right hand lands for him. Low kicks of his own. 1-1-1-2 from Ponzinibbio, who’s starting to force Baeza back. More stiff jabs. Baeza body kick. Long combination from Ponzinibbio bounces off the guard. He shoots again, denied. Round 3: Baeza opens with leg kicks. Ponzinibbio sending out his jab. Clean 1-2 from Baeza a minute in. Ponzinibbio comes back with stiff jabs. Hard left kick exchange. Baeza to the body. Hard low kick. Cross counter lands for him after taking some jabs. 1-1-2 by Baeza two minutes in. 2-3 by Ponzinibbio, 1-2 afterwards. Good body shot from Baeza. He eats a leg kick. Big right hands by Ponzinibbio and now he’s on the attack with two minutes to go.

Stiff jabs landing, big left hook. Baeza throwing back, stings him with a right cross. Low kicks from Baeza. He’s swinging hard. Jab and leg kicks from Ponzinibbio, then a left hook upstairs as he eats a low kick in return. One minute to go. Ponzinibbio walking through the kicks and landing hard shots. 185 lbs.: Gregory Rodrigues vs. Dusko Todorovic

Round 1: Todorovic fires a 1-1-2 into the clinch. Cuffing right by Rodrigues as he reverses. Nice hip toss by the Brazilian, who eats a body shot as Todorovic separates. Jab to the body and low kick from Rodriuges a minute in. 2-1. Todorovic ducks a left hook for a shot, denied with a whizzer. Big right hands connect for Rodrigues two minutes in. Another right on the counter. He slips an overhand. Another short right hand met by one from Todorovic. Two minutes to go.

Todorovic leg kick. Two big right crosses land for Rodrigues, who eats a 1-2 and comes back with combos of his own. Todorovic ties up, then they separate with a minute to go. Flurry appears to land for him. Counter overhand from Rodrigues. 10-9 Rodrigues.

Round 2: Early right cross from Rodrigues to answer a body kick. Todorovic with a knee to the body, cracked with a 3-2 and body shot. 1-2 as well, then a right hand on the lead. Another cross and left hook by Rodrigues. Check hook a minute in. Counter right, then one downstairs. Blast double puts him on top near the fence. Todorovic gets to his knees and stands, eating a knee along the way. Rodrigues looking for the back two minutes in. Right hand lands for him. Todorovic avoids a big left, eats a right hand as they separate. Low kick lands for him. Two minutes to go.

Todorovic puts him on the fence once again. Knee from Rodrigues. Todorovic tries to change levels, nothing doing. Body kick from the Brazilian. Todorovic double jab with a minute to go. Counter 2-3 by Rodrigues. Body shot, jab exchange. Calf kick connects. Counter right hand. 10-9 Rodrigues.

Round 3: Rodrigues jabbing early. Todorovic on the front foot, lands a flying knee and ties up. Body shots in the clinch before separating. Rodrigues shoots, can’t keep him down. One minute in. 1-2 connects, then they trade right hands. Rodrigues digs a left hook downstairs, denies a clinch attempt. 1-1-2, head kick attempt. Counter right. Big right cross by Todorovic in response, then a brief clinch. Two minutes in. 2-1-2 for Rodrigues. Stiff jab from Todorovic. He walks into a counter 3-2. Two minutes to go.

125 lbs.: Montana De La Rosa vs. Ariane Lipski

Round 1: Lipski targets the body, lands a good flurry upstairs. De La Rosa tries to rush in without success. One minute in. Big counter right by Lipski. Both land right hands near the fence. Two minutes in. Lipski to the body once again. De La Rosa grabs a body lock and, despite some resistance, drags her down into half guard. Lipski regains guard with two minutes to go.

Lipski throwing some elbows off of her back as De La Rosa looks for short shots. One minute to go. Elbow opens Lipski up, though it’s not directly above the eye. Heavy one before the bell. 10-9 De La Rosa.

Round 2: Lipski comes out aggressively, only to get taken down in the opening seconds. Looking for a leglock a minute in, gives up side control and eats an elbow in the process. Knee on belly. Two minutes in. Lipski’s cut above the other eye as well now. Back to half guard. Staying heavy with two minutes to go.

Lipski looking for a kimura, nothing doing. Full mount for De La Rosa. Good elbows with a minute to go. Damage piling up and the hammerfists force the stoppage.

Final result: De La Rosa def. Lipski by TKO (punches)


265 lbs.: Tanner Boser vs. Ilir Latifi

Round 1: Boser sending out some early kicks. He whiffs on a 1-2 in the center. One minute in. Latifi catches a kick and dumps him down into guard. Half guard now for Latifi two minutes in. On to side control with two minutes to go.

Latifi not throwing much but staying heavy. Boser manages to scramble to his feet and put him on the fence. They separate with just over a minute to go. Both try right hands. Boser head kick attempt, lands a jab. More jabs. Body kick attempt. 10-9 Latifi, but Boser’s jabs may have edged it.

Round 2: Latifi looks for a counter combo. 2-3. Low kick lands for Boser. One minute in. Heavy counter right by LAtifi. 3-2 from Boser. 2-3. Two minutes in. Both throw heavy kicks. Boser leg kick, Latifi counter right. Latifi suddenly turns his back as though he took an eye poke and Boser swarms with two minutes to go.

Latifi manages to survive, then shoot in after eating another right hand. Boser separates with a minute to go. He looks for combinations on the fence. Glancing counter right by Latifi. 10-9 Boser.

Round 3: Doctor steps in to look at Latifi’s eye; replay shows it was probably a knuckle. Latifi elects to continue.

Jab from Latifi, eats a leg kick in return. Shovel hook by Boser. Good single-leg puts Latifi on top in guard. Short punches landing for him. Two minutes in. Continuing to work. Two minutes to go.

Latifi passes to half guard. One minute to go. More short punches, but nothing hugely damaging. 10-9 Latifi. First round decides it.

170 lbs.: Muslim Salikhov vs. Francisco Trinaldo

Round 1: Trinaldo slowly pressing forward. Both just miss with their rear hands. Body jab from Salikhov. Spinning back kick attempt a minute in. Trinaldo tries to explode into range with punches. Both crack the body. Salikhov tries to go high, takes a long 1-2. Brief clinch two minutes in. Front kick by Salikhov. Glancing left by Trinaldo in combination. Salikhov body kick. Right hand glances off. Low kick to body shot met by Trinaldo combinations with two minutes to go.

Knee to the body from the Brazilian. Salikhov leg kick, eats a hard left in response. Glancing head kick by Salikhov, wheel kick falls short. One minute to go. Salikhov goes low-high. Check hook. Trinaldo lands a body kick, but gets badly hurt by a counter right and falls under the subsequent fire. Brutal ground shots from Salikhov. Trinaldo tries to turn for a leg before the bell. 10-9 Salikhov.

Round 2: Early flurry from the Brazilian. Overhand left. Salikhov whiffs on an uppercut, takes a body shot. Body kick to right hand. 2-3 by Trinaldo. Calf kick seems to bother him a minute in. Sharp counter left. Double jab and left hook come back at him. Looping right wobbles Trinaldo once again, then a glancing head kick. Trinaldo still marching forward two minutes in, lands an overhand left. Jabs from Salikhov. Counter 2-3-2, but a glancing overhand left sends him stumbling back. Trinaldo lands some body shots and gets taken to the fence with two minutes to go.

Jockeying for position, separation. Straight right by Salikhov. Head kick attempt. Trinaldo puts him on the fence with a minute to go, can’t keep him there for long. Good left hook by Salikhov. Trinaldo body kick answered in kind. Salikhov slings him to the mat, doesn’t follow him down. Great fight. 10-9 Salikhov.

Round 3: And there’s yet another eye poke right off the bat, as Trinaldo accidentally buries a finger in Salikhov’s right eye. Salikhov takes some time to recover, then eats a hard left hand to the eye. Salikhov ties up, blocks a head kick, then lands to the body before Trinaldo puts him on the fence. They separate a minute in. Trinaldo coming on super hard, briefly trips Salikhov off-balance. Head kick attempt from the Brazilian. Salikhov 1-2 as he circles. He catches a kick, elects to burn some clock standing over Trinaldo and kicking his legs. 1-2-front kick attempt, then a whiffed wheel kick. Hard right to the body, then another near-miss on a wheel kick. Two minutes to go.

Trinaldo digs a left downstairs, can’t pin him against the fence. Body kick connects. Both swing left hands in the center. Body kick and 1-2 from Salikhov. One minute to go. Brutal counter right and a high-amplitude takedown put Salikhov on top in guard. He lands short punches until the bell. 10-9 Salikhov.

Final result: Salikhov def. Trinaldo by unanimous decision


145 lbs.: Makwan Amirkhani vs. Kamuela Kirk

Round 1: Amirkhani tries an early flying knee. Kirk with a head kick attempt. Oblique kick. Another missed knee by Amirkhani a minute in. He shoots, denied. He shoots again, denied again. Kirk looks for a right hand. Two minutes in. 1-2 downstairs. Body kick. Amirkhani looks for a single-leg and takes Kirk to the fence. High-amplitude suplex by Amirkhani, but Kirk pops right back up, only to fall victim to an inside trip into guard with two minutes to go.

Kirk working to stand. He makes it up with a minute to go. They separate. Swatting right knocks Kirk off-balance for a moment, then Amirkhani takes a finger in the eye.Straight left from the Finn. Body kick, eats a hard right hand and glancing head kick in return. 10-9 Amirkhani.

Round 2: Low kick from Kirk. Amirkhani with a counter right, takes a straight downstairs. Kirk with a 1-2-2. One minute in. Another body shot. He easily denies a long-range shot. Straight right. Straight lefts from Amirkhani in return. Amirkhani counter right and reactive shot, avoiding a guillotine in the process. Kirk looks to elevate and attack a leg. More good use of butterfly hooks but he can’t make space. Two minutes to go.

Amirkhani settles down in guard, only to get caught in a triangle. Kirk adds an arm bar to it and it looks nasty, but Amirkhani waits it out and settles back into guard. 10-9 Kirk.

Round 3: They trade lefts to start. Amirkhani briefly changes levels, has a head kick blocked. Now a right hand exchange. Amirkhani looks pretty spent, but lands a left hand. 3-2. Uppercut to double-leg a minute in. He settles on top in guard. Staying heavy as Kirk tries to elevate two minutes in. Kirk tries to bring up his legs, then spins to his knees, hunting Amirkhani’s back. Amirkhani stays attached against the fence. Two minutes to go.

Rear waist lock for Amirkhani as Kirk tries to utilize the fence. Kirk sweeps into top position, survives a sweep in return, and sets up in half guard. One minute to go. Amirkhani just holding on. Gonna be some interesting scorecards. 10-9 Amirkhani.

Final result: Kirk def. Amirkhani by unanimous decision


155 lbs.: Mason Jones vs. Alan Patrick

Round 1: Jones shuts down the first takedown attempt 30-seconds in. Wild spinning back fist appears to land for Patrick. Knee inside. Jones still trying to press forward, lands a body kick and denies another shot a minute in. Body shots in the clinch, elbow on the break. Counter right catches Patrick coming in. Patrick answers with a body kick. He tries to spin again and slips. Jabs from Jones two minutes in. Another failed spin by Patrick but he manages to crack Jones with a left hand. Jones body kicks on the fence. Brutal counter 2-1 wobbles Patrick. Glancing uppercut behind it with two minutes to go.

Jones stuffs another takedown and lands punches on the break. Head kick attempt, ducks a back fist. Patrick pulls guard, eating punches from guard. Nasty elbows from Jones. Patrick stands and Jones hits a takedown into half guard. One minute to go. More heavy ground-and-pound and a bloodied Patrick. Crushing elbow. He stands over Patrick and continues to bomb away. Now smashing Patrick as the Brazilian tries to stand. Patrick knuckles down and swings haymakers of his own. 10-8 Jones.

Round 2: Patrick goes for an early shot, only to be taken to the fence. Inside trip puts Jones on top in guard. Patient ground-and-pound a minute in. Patrick makes it to his feet and manages to separate, getting a warning for grabbing the fence in the process. Jones stuffs another takedown, but lands an eye poke in the process. Patrick says he can’t see, so they wave it off.

Final result: No Contest (eye poke)


125 lbs.: Manon Fiorot vs. Tabatha Ricci

Round 1: Fiorot advancing early, sending out heavy kicks. Man, the size difference looks enormous. More side kicks from Fiorot. One minute in. Jab connects. Low kick. Double jab. Ricci struggling with the reach difference. She tries to change levels, denied. Body kick to head kick from Fiorot two minutes in. 1-2 near the fence. Ricci looking for the occasional combo without success. Two minutes to go.

Sharp 1-2 from Fiorot. Ricci with a right hand after absorbing a combo. She shoots, denied, eats a side kick. Combination by Fiorot on the fence. Ricci shoots again, nothing doing, eats a 1-2 in return. One minute to go. Another Fiorot straight left. Ricci with a right downstairs. Fiorot 3-2, slips, takes a body kick. 10-9 Fiorot.

Round 2: Fiorot pressing forward once again, nearly hits a takedown of her own after landing a combination. Right hand at the end of a combo. One minute in, 1-2 connects. They trade leg kicks, Fiorot 1-2 behind hers. Good combo and a knee against the fence. Ricci just unable to slow Fiorot down so far. Two minutes in. Elbows from Fiorot against the fence. 3-2. Ricci catches a kick, lands a knee. Heavy right hand drops Ricci on the fence and Fiorot pummels her as she stands. Ricci somehow manages to survive and briefly gets a kimura grip before Fiorot separates and unloads for the finish.

Final result: Fiorot def. Ricci by TKO (punches)


145 lbs.: Sean Woodson vs. Youssef Zalal

Round 1: Woodson working behind his jab to start. Zalal circling, lands left hooks and low kicks. Body kick a minute in. Another clean left hook by Zalal. Woodson with his own low kick. Zalal shoots against the fence. Two minutes in. They separate. Woodson body kick, Zalal left hook. Clean 1-2 knocks Zalal back. Two minutes to go.

Check hook from Zalal. Both try spinning back kicks. Zalal continuing to target the lead leg, takes him to the fence. Can’t get the high crotch. One minute to go. Woodson reverses, tries a head kick on the break. Zalal re-enters with a double leg and wrangles him to the mat against the fence. 10-9 Zalal.

Round 2: Neither landing clean in the first minute. Counter right from Zalal, who eats a jab in return. Woodson body kick. Zalal looks for a double-leg. Can’t get it, lands a good elbow, re-shoots. Another elbow as they separate. Combination and body kick from Woodson. Two minutes to go.

Woodson grabs a body lock of his own and puts Zalal on the fence. He tries a combination on the break. Counter right met by a Zalal left hook. Another left hook. They trade low kicks in center cage. Lead right, combo form Woodson in return. One minute to go. Woodson counter left as Zalal changes levels. He wraps up a guillotine in the waning seconds. 10-9 Woodson.

Round 3: Zalal tries a reactive shot and takes Woodson to the fence. They separate, then Zalal shoots in again a minute in. Continuing to grind against the fence. Zalal still grinding. Woodson looks for a guillotine and the pair separate. Zalal looks for a takedown with a minute to go and Woodson wraps up another guillotine, sweeping into top position. Zalal slips out the back door and takes the back, only to get swept. Woodson landing better in the waning seconds. 10-9 Woodson.

155 lbs.: Jordan Leavitt vs. Claudio Puelles

Round 1: They trade leg kicks to start. Leavitt landing the heavier ones so far. Both hit the body. Leavitt shoots in for a single-leg, continues to drive as Puelles tries to roll free. One minute in. Puelles defending against the fence, pops up as he’s dragged down. Two minutes in. Leavitt finally manages to get him down and take guard, only for Puelles to stand once again. Puelles still can’t dislodge him, though. Another successful takedown. Puelles stands against the fence with two minutes to go.

Now Puelles manages to limp-leg out and separate. Trading body kicks and low kicks. Puelles shoots, sprawled on initially, gets him down with a minute to go. On top in guard. Leavitt looking to attack an arm. 10-9 Leavitt?
