Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) returns to its APEX facility in Las Vegas, Nevada, for the UFC Vegas 51 mixed martial arts (MMA) event TONIGHT (Sat., April 16, 2022) streaming LIVE on both ESPN and ESPN+, topped by the 170-pound rematch pitting No. 5-ranked welterweight contender Vicente Luque opposite longtime 170-pound rival and No. 6-seeded title hopeful, Belal Muhammad. Before that five-round clash of styles gets underway, Brazilian middleweight Caio Borralho trades leather with venerable Russian bruiser and fellow 185-pound Contender Series graduate, Gadzhi Omargadzhiev, in UFC Vegas 51’s co-main event. Low kick exchange. Well-timed shot from Muhammad puts him on top in guard. Two minutes to go.

Half guard for Muhammad. Back to full, solid punches. One minute to go. Luque tries to get to his feet and Muhammad looks for the back. Luque manages to turn and face him, then lands some body shots inside. They separate in the last 20 seconds. 10-9 Muhammad.

Round 2: Luque back on the advance. Solid jabs, hard low kick. 1-2 from Muhammad. Quick exchange on the fence a minute in. Luque body kick. Solid punches by Muhammad. More low kicks from Luque two minutes in. Body kick. Left hand and flurry by Muhammad. Two minutes to go.

Another calf kick by Luque, who surrenders a takedown. Short shots from guard. Luque tries to scoot to the fence and Muhammad goes for his back with a minute to go. Nice scramble by Luque to get to his feet. 10-9 Muhammad.

Round 3: Tight left hook stings Muhammad. Luque follows with an uppercut, can’t polish him off inside. One minute in. Hard left hook on the break hurts Muhammad again. Sharp elbow lands for Muhammad, who shoots. Muhammad wraps up the clinch, but Luque denies the takedown and breaks free.

Luque’s left hand is landing more and more. Luque digs into the body then chops the calf. Muhammad fires a couple shots with his back to the fence, and he scores a badly needed trip takedown. Muhammad establishes control in guard, but Luque scrambles up before anything too significant happens. Back on the offensive, Luque puts together a combination. Muhammad counters and keeps his feet moving. Big elbow for Luque. 10-9 Luque

Round 4: Glancing head kick scores early for the Brazilian, and a calf kick wobbles Muhammad moments later. Luque puts together some left hand lands, and Muhammad finds a nice right hand. Well-timed takedown from Muhammad! Muhammad passes into side control. Luque turns away, rolls, and escapes to his feet. Right away, Luque walks forward and chops the lead leg.

Heavy left from Luque. Stiff jab from Muhammad. Another. Double jab from Luque, and Muhammad misses wide on a spin. The two trade big right hands, and Luque lands a hook near the bell. Close round. 10-9 Luque

Round 5: Muhammad lands first with a nice counter right to answer Luque’s pressure. Luque defends his opponent’s first takedown attempt, but he takes an elbow on the break. Hard calf kick chop from Luque, who also finds a right hand. Luque stuffs another takedown.

Muhammad takes a low kick and shoots again, but this time Luque threatens him with a front choke. Muhammad gets away without getting strangle, and he immediately answers with a huge takedown! Luque gives up his back and works up to his feet, but he can’t shake Muhammad. He finally frees himself with a minute remaining, but time is short. Muhammad lands a stiff 1-2. Calf kick from Luque. He needs a finish. He’s not going to get it. 10-9 Muhammad

185 lbs.: Caio Borralho vs. Gadzhi Omargadzhiev

Round 1: Both men open with kick. Counter right connects for Omargadzhiev, then another in combination. He catches a low kick, lands a right hand, and takes Borralho down. Borralho immediately sweeps into top guard a minute in. Borralho stands over him, absorbs an upkick on the way back down. Short elbows landing for him. Omargadzhiev tries a Capoeira kick two minutes in before Borralho returns to top position. Omargadzhiev gets to his knees and Borralho looks for the back with two minutes to go.

Both hooks in for Borralho, now a body triangle. Solid elbows. Both men throwing punches. One minute to go. Nasty elbow from Borralho. 10-9 Borralho.

Round 2: Head kick and wheel kick attempts from Omargadzhiev. Overhand right lands for him, then a body kick. Borralho tries a head kick. Borralho tries a flying knee, then lances Omargadzhiev with a counter left. Omargadzhiev slips, eats shots on the way up. One minute in. Omargadzhiev swings so hard he falls over and gives up the back. Borralho’s high and Omargadzhiev’s looking to turn into guard. Two minutes in. Borralho secures the back and drops punches. Looking for a Suloev stretch, no dice. Two minutes to go.

Round 3: Head kick from Omadgadzhiev to start. Hard counter right and he shoots. Knees stray low. Borralho takes some time to recover. Flying knee attempt from Borralho a minute in. Check hook. Omargadzhiev tries to spin. He flurries, gets tripped to the ground. Borralho looking for his back two minutes in. Omargadhziev rolls for a leg. Borralho pulls it free with two minutes to go.

Borralho sprawls on a shot and moves to a rear waist lock. Omargadzhiev tries a throw but ends up on his back. He tries to use the fence to stand and eats an illegal knee. The ref takes a point from Borralho. Omargadzhiev can’t continue, and they head to the judges. 9-9.

Final result: Borralho def. Omargadzhiev by technical decision


170 lbs.: Miguel Baeza vs. Andre Fialho

Round 1: Low kick and left hook from Fialho to start. Baeza circling, tossing out the occasional kick. Low kick exchange. One minute in. Left hook from Fialho behind the jab. Cross counter, jab, body shot. Hard 1-2 from Baeza lands clean. Body shot soon after. Two minutes in. Baeza now on the advance. Right crosses from Baeza, left hook from Fialho. Fialho lead hook, eats a leg kick and 1-2. Two minutes to go.

Both men doing damage to the leg. Hard right hand from Baeza and he unloads a lengthy flurry until Fialho forces him back with a right hand. Clean 1-2 from Fialho soon after. Heavy hook with a minute to go. Overhand right by Fialho, 1-2 from Baeza. Tight right cross. Jabs from Fialho and he hurts Baeza bad with clinch uppercuts. Baeza tries to retreat and a left hook sends him to the canvas. Fialho puts him out with a hammerfist and the ref intervenes as Baeza wakes up.

135 lbs.: Mayra Bueno Silva vs. Yanan Wu

Round 1: Low kick from Silva, body kick from Wu. Wu looking for combinations. Tossing out kicks. One minute in. Silva lands a low kick and eats a body kick. Spinning kick attempt. Good low-high combo by Wu. 2-1, then another. Silva marches in and badly hurts her with left hooks, sending her to the mat. Wu quickly gets her wits back and returns to her feet. Body shot from Silva two minutes in. Stiff jab. They trade in the center. Oblique kick from Wu and they trade leg kicks. Wu’s feeling the calf kicks. Two minutes to go.

Wu tries a flurry. She’s still moving well, but eats a 1-2. 1-1-2 attempt. One minute to go. Both go to the body. Hard knee by Silva and a glancing head kick on the break. Jab from Wu. Clubbing 1-2 comes back at her. Silva lands a lead hook, then an overhand right that stings Wu again. 10-9 Silva.

Round 2: Wu active early. She counters a low kick with a jab. Silva with a body kick. Nice combo by Wu in return. One minute in. Tight 1-2 lands for Silva, who answers a left hook with a head kick. Wu counter right. Silva jabs the body in return, then falls back for a triangle off a missed head kick. That’s in deep two minutes in. Wu slips her head free and settles in guard. She postures up, comes back down. Silva trying to grab a kimura with two minutes to go.

Nice crank from Silva, but she’s in half guard. Wu twists her arm free and looks for the back. Side control with a minute to go. Silva rolls to her knees, eats elbows. Now she’s in on her own takedown attempt. Silva tries an outside trip but can’t establish. Elbow on the break. 10-9 Wu.

Round 3: Well-timed teep briefly makes Silva stumble. She’s looking labored. Low kick lands for her. Wu very active with her hands. One minute in. Hard 1-2 by Silva, eats a cross in return and jabs the body. More body work by Silva, who whiffs on a hook upstairs. Stiff jab. Wu to the body. Low kick exchange. Two minutes in. Trading jabs. Heavy 1-2 by Silva met by a flurry. Another 1-2. Hard jab. Wu body kick with two minutes to go.

145 lbs.: Pat Sabatini vs. T.J. Laramie

Round 1: Low kick exchange to start. Sabatini shoots, denied. Laramie gets double unders on the next shot and puts him on the fence. Outside trip puts him on top a minute in. Half guard for Laramie. Sabatini regains butterfly guard, then looks for mission control two minutes in. Laramie snuffs out and tries a knee on the way up. They separate. They trade kicks and Sabatini drags him down with a double-leg. Laramie pops right back up against the fence. Two minutes to go.

They separate. Left hook from Laramie as Sabatini tries to open up. Nice exchange. Laramie puts him on the fence. They separate with a minute to go. Hard body kick nearly folds Laramie and Sabatini jumps on a guillotine. Laramie responds by passing to mount, only for Sabatini to quickly regain guard. Half guard in the final seconds. 10-9 Sabatini.

Round 2: Sabatini shoots, denied with a guillotine threat. Laramie takes him to the fence and changes levels. Sabatini tries his own shot, ends up on the fence anyway. Whizzer kick denied. One minute in. Sabatini elevates a leg and takes Laramie down, hunting the back. Hammerfists from Sabatini. Two minutes in. Laramie fighting off Sabatini’s attempts to get a hook in. Brief mount. Short punches from Sabatini piling up. Two minutes to go.

Round 3: Heavy exchange to start. Laramie denies a takedown. Sabatini shoots again, still can’t get it despite a nice angle. Laramie separates, just avoids a head kick and spinning back fist. Sabatini times a leg kick for another takedown. Laramie threatens a leglock a minute in. Nothing there. He rolls to his knees, settles for giving up half guard in the scramble. Two minutes in. Laramie regains guard. Short punches from Sabatini. Laramie kicks him off, immediately has to deal with another shot. Sabatini gets him to a knee and looks for the back with two minutes to go.

170 lbs.: Mounir Lazzez vs. Ange Loosa

Round 1: Both looking to jab early. Low kick from Loosa. To the inside as well as they occasionally trade jabs. One minute in. Liver shot to leg kick from Lazzez. Loosa digs one to the body as well. Another body shot by Lazzez. Oblique kick. Rapid exchange, sharp jab. Two minutes in. Loosa low kick, Lazzez body shots. Slick head kick from Lazzez as Loosa continues to target the leg. Solid cross upstairs. More jabs from Lazzez with two minutes to go.

Round 2: Back to the high-speed striking exchanges. Loosa shoots, manages to elevate the leg, can’t complete it. Body shot to elbow from Lazzez. Loosa low kicks. One minute in. 265 lbs.: Devin Clark vs. William Knight

Round 1: Clark tries a front kick. Stiff jab snaps Knight’s head back. One minute in. Nice shot by Clark, Knight looks to respond with a guillotine. He’s cranking it, no dice. Just holding onto the front headlock two minutes in. Clark kneeing his thighs. More knees. Two minutes to go.

Knight suddenly erupts with a flying knee on the break and tees off on Clark, who shoots and gets sprawled on. Clark cuts the corner on a high crotch, can’t keep him down, puts him on the fence. Knees from Clark. Right to the body, head kick attempt. 10-9 Clark.

Round 2: Clark tossing out front kicks. Solid left hook. One minute in. Brutal right hand into a takedown puts him on top in half guard. Two minutes in. Solid elbow. He works his way to mount with two minutes to go.

Clark staying heavy, landing short shots. One minute to go. Knight holding him down, not doing much else. Knight explodes out, avoids a back take, and hits a suplex. 10-9 Clark.

Round 3: Quick head kick attempt from Clark. He lands a jab and they exchange low kicks. One minute in. More low kicks from Clark, tries to go high. Heavy left hook into a successful double-leg two minutes in. Knight muscles his way back to the feet, where Clark chips away with knees downstairs. Two minutes to go.

Just as the announcers say that Knight could be waiting for his moment, Clark takes his legs out with an elbow and follow-up left hook. A right hand in the clinch sends him down again and in comes the ref.

Final result: Clark def. Knight by TKO (elbow and punches)


135 lbs.: Pannie Kianzad vs. Lina Lansberg

Round 1: Kianzad takes her to the fence, can’t get the takedown. Knee exchange. They separate. Lansberg hops into the clinch a minute in, gets taken to the fence again. She reverses, fires knees downstairs and looks for a single-leg. Two minutes in. They disengage. Big overhand right by Lansberg, who puts her on the fence and eats a knee. Kianzad spins to a rear body lock. One hook, landing short shots. Two minutes to go.

Kianzad gets her down against the fence. Looking for full back mount. One minute to go. Short right hand as Lansberg tries to turn into her. Better control position for Kianzad, dropping punches. 10-9 Kianzad.

Round 2: Trading left hooks to start as Lansberg pushes forward and ties up. Kianzad reverses on the fence. Lansberg lands a knee on the break, eats a left hook and body shots in close. One minute in. They separate. Lansberg’s left eye has a cut around it that’s leaking quite a bit. She puts Kianzad on the fence. Short knees. Two minutes in. They separate and the ref pauses things to check out Lansberg’s eye. Doctor clears her and they resume. Hard 1-2-3 by Kianzad. Lansberg wades back into the clinch, eats uppercuts, lands a knee downstairs. Knee to the head from Kianzad with two minutes to go.

Kianzad fires knees downstairs and puts her on the fence. Short elbow, bigger one from Lansberg in return. Another elbow floors Kianzad, who pops up but wobbles back. Round 1: Early counter right and low kicks land for Jenkins. Body kick from Klose. He grabs a body lock and slams Jenkins to the mat despite a fence grab. Looking for the back on the way up. Quick foot sweep gets Jenkins back down, though he pops up again. Knees to the body from Klose, elbow before the break. Low kick exchange. Solid knee and elbow by Jenkins, but Klose response by mauling him from the single collar tie. Huge right hands land clean. Another as he wobbles on the fence. Klose going for the kill. Jenkins finally ties up and lands a knee downstairs. Two minutes to go.

Jenkins slips, scrambles up. Body kick and low kicks. Head kick attempt. Klose seemingly conserving energy. One minute to go. Uppercut and low kick from Klose, then a right that finally drops Jenkins. Jenkins wakes up on the way down, gets clobbered on the way up. Klose has to settle for over-unders. 10-8 Klose.

Round 2: Low kicks from Jenkins, knee from Klose. Klose follows with a huge right uppercut, then buries Jenkins in clubbing shots until the ref intervenes.

155 lbs.: Rafa Garcia vs. Jesse Ronson

Round 1: Garcia looking for overhand rights. Low kick and straight left from Ronson. Nice body shot, brief slip. 2-1 from Garcia. Overhand right. Ronson body kick and jab a minute in. Straight left up top. Ronson staying aggressive. Double right by Garcia, eats a low kick in return. Two minutes in. Clean counter right by Garcia. He goes low-high. Ronson continues to pressure. Ronson shrugs off a takedown attempt. Good exchange. Garcia shoots and spins him to the mat, but can’t take his back on the way up. They separate. Garcia feints a jab and completes another double-leg. One minute to go. Ronson manages to get underhooks and separates. Lead right, abandons a level change. Good counter right after eating a 1-2. Garcia with an uppercut-left hook. Clean 1-2 from Ronson on the fence. Low kick connects. 10-9 Garcia.

Round 2: Garcia rebuffs a shot, then spins him down into guard with a single-leg. Ronson scoots to the fence and stands, eating a grounded knee in the process. Ref takes a point from Garcia. Quick double-leg from Garcia. On top in half guard. Ronson scoots to the fence again, this time gets rebuffed but avoids a back tank. Elbow from Garcia. Short punches. Ronson tries to jump on a kimura, nothing doing. Garcia continuing to work from half guard.

Ronson not doing much to dislodge Garcia, who’s feeding a steady diet of short punches. Now he tries to scramble and Garcia latches onto his back. One minute to go. Solid punches open up Ronson’s neck for the RNC and there’s the tap.

265 lbs.: Chris Barnett vs. Martin Buday

Round 1: Low kick lands for Buday as he advances. Brief clinch. He checks a leg kick. Solid counter left by Barnett prompts an exchange until Buday puts him on the fence a minute in. Chipping away inside. Short punches, knees downstairs. Barnett separates two minutes in. Buday ties up, lands a knee, just misses with an uppercut before taking him to the fence. Barnett separates, lands a Superman jab and low kick. Three-piece by Buday. Two minutes to go.

Barnett falls short with combos. Solid rights from Buday, who absorbs one in return. He takes Barnett to the fence again and goes back to the knees and punches. One minute to go. More good clinch work by Buday. 10-9 Buday.

Round 2: Early low kick by Barnett, then a jumping switch kick to the body. Buday continuing to advance, absorbs a body kick and bullies him to the fence. Nasty head pressure by Buday as he digs to the body. One minute in. Big exchange when they separate, then Barnett puts him on the fence in return. Buday gets double unders and reverses two minutes in. The dirty boxing continues. Nice knee downstairs. Two minutes to go.

They separate. Solid left from Barnett, who avoids an uppercut. Buday bullies him to the fence again. One minute to go. Buday with a knee on the break. Flying knee attempt, heavy shots inside. Back to the clinch. One more knee, Barnett tries a spinning elbow in return. 10-9 Buday.

Round 3: Barnett tells his corner between rounds that his rib’s damaged. Left hand from Buday into the clinch. One minute in. Heavy knee to the body folds Barnett, who somehow manages to work his way up as Buday hits his guard with punches. Heavy elbow gets through. Another elbow and Barnett goes down, claiming it’s to the back of the head. The ref rules it unintentional, so we head to the scorecards. 10-9 Buday.

155 lbs.: Jordan Leavitt vs. Trey Ogden

Round 1: Both men tossing out low kicks. 1-2 and side kick to the body by Ogden. Continuing to pick at each other’s legs. Body kick from Leavitt. One minute in. Leavitt doing well with body and leg kicks. Ogden trying to answer with 1-2s to the body but checking nothing. Leavitt low kicks, Ogden body shots. Two minutes in. Ogden backs him to the fence, side kick to the body. He slips and Leavitt jumps into his guard. Two minutes to go.

Ogden making a spirited effort to separate but unable to do so. One minute to go. Ogden suddenly wraps up an arm-in guillotine. He uses it to roll into mount, gets rolled to his back once again. Leavitt manages to tough it out. 10-9 Ogden.

Round 2: Ogden shoots and his head collides with Leavitt’s jaw, prompting a pause. Leavitt goes back to picking at his legs with repeated kicks. Ogden completely disinclined to check them. Body shot lands for him. Leavitt continuing to spam the low kick, as Ogden hasn’t given him any reason to stop. One minute in. Ogden with some body shots, Leavitt sneaks in one of his own. More body shots by Ogden. Two minutes in. Leavitt shoots, denied. Body kick lands for him, inside low kick. More swatting kicks by Leavitt. Ogden digs a right downstairs and ties up. They separate with two minutes to go.

Leavitt goes right back to spamming leg kicks, while Ogden looks for right body shots. Ogden to the body again, avoids a spin, takes a body kick. One minute to go. Leavitt shoots, denied. More leg kicks. They trade body shots. 10-9 Leavitt.

Round 3: Leavitt shoots, gets rebuffed, accepts guard. Nice sweep back to his feet. Low-high combo from Ogden, who puts him on the fence. He muscles Leavitt down a minute in. Leavitt turns to his knees and gets to his feet, Ogden still attached. Knee on the break. Two solid right hands from Leavitt sting Ogden, who shoots before pulling guard two minutes in. Tiny shots from Leavitt. Two minutes to go.

Ogden doing nothing off of his back, Leavitt doing mildly less nothing from the top. One minute to go. Ogden considers a couple submission attempts, nothing close. 10-9 Leavitt.

Final result: Leavitt def. Ogden by split decision


115 lbs.: Sam Hughes vs. Istela Nunes

Round 1: Teep from Nunes after trying a head kick. Another, then an inside leg kick and a vicious right cross that Hughes absorbs. Staying busy with the kicks and counters. One minute in. Low kick to body kick. Jab lands for Hughes, who takes a finger in the eye. She’s struggling to get inside without getting picked off. Counter 3-2s from Nunes, body shots two minutes in. Head kick attempt, teep connects. Hughes landing the occasional jab. She ties up, eats a knee. 3-2 from Nunes. Again. Two minutes to go.

Nunes whiffs a flying knee. Jab exchange. Check hook connects, then a counter right and another check hook. More teeps. Hughes tries to press in with a 1-2. Hard cross from Nunes met by a jab with a minute to go. Body kicks on the retreat. Left hook connects, Hughes comes back with a double jab. 10-9 Nunes.

Round 2: Hughes tries to shoot and eats a knee for her trouble. Nunes continuing to sit out of range and potshot. One minute in. Check hook, 1-2 attempt. Hughes puts her on the fence, can’t keep her there. Nunes 1-2. Hughes sneaks in a counter right. Up-elbow by Nunes a minute in, then a heavy chopping right before she denies another clinch. Hughes is staying on the front foot but seems outclassed. There’s a solid left from her as I say that. They trade good lefts. Hughes hauls her to the fence with two minutes to go.

Nunes lands a 1-2 after they separate. Jab from Hughes. Nunes check hook met by another jab. One minute to go. Hughes to the body. Lead right. 1-2 and knee by Nunes in return. Hughes shoots under a right hand and muscles Nunes to the mat. Dropping punches from the crucifix until the bell. 10-9 Hughes.

Round 3: Nunes lands a knee to the body, eats a right hand and knee inside. Jab exchange. Hughes lead right. 1-2, body shot. Lead rights continuing to land. One minute in. Another lead right from Hughes. Overhand by Nunes in return, eats a 2-3. Hughes seems to have figured out the range of Nunes’ counters. Nunes pokes her in the eye yet again and loses a point for it. Two minutes in. Hughes ducks a right hand and ties up on the fence. Successful takedown into mount. Nunes makes enough space to regain half guard. Two minutes to go.

Hughes chipping away at close range. One minute to go. Hughes landing some decent shots. She postures up for some big ones before the bell. 10-8 Hughes with the point deduction.

Final result: Hughes def. Nunes by majority decision


135 lbs.: Alatengheili vs. Kevin Croom

Round 1: I got to my keyboard four minutes late and Alatengheili had already flattened Croom with a vicious series of punches.
