Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) returns to its APEX facility in Las Vegas, Nevada, for the UFC Vegas 52 mixed martial arts (MMA) event TONIGHT (Sat., April 23, 2022) streaming LIVE on ESPN+. The promotion’s latest (but not greatest) “Fight Night” card is topped by the 115-pound showdown between No. 10-ranked strawweight up-and-comer Amanda Lemos and former division champion Jessica Andrade, who makes her return to strawweight after coming up short in her bid to become flyweight champion. Before that five-round all-Brazilian battle gets underway, longtime lightweight “Carpenter” Clay Guida will try to impose his considerable will upon Peruvian grappling whiz kid Claudio Puelles in the UFC Vegas 52 co-main event. Flyweights Maycee Barber and Montana De La Rosa, as well as featherweights Charles Jourdain and Lando Vannata, will also see ESPN+ main card action in “Sin City.”

UFC VEGAS 52 PLAY-BY-PLAY:

115 lbs.: Amanda Lemos vs. Jessica Andrade

Round 1: Lemos slowly advancing. Both fire low kicks. One minute in. Good leg kick by Lemos, who tries a lead right. Andrade goes low-high with kicks. Lemos 2-3 just misses, low kick does not. Two minutes in. Head kick attempts. Andrade comes back with a jumping front kick. Lemos front kick and counter right, but Andrade ducks a left hook to lock up a standing arm triangle. Two minutes to go.

While she can’t wrench Lemos to the mat, the squeeze is powerful enough to force Lemos to tap. Damn, haven’t seen that in a while.

Final result: Andrade def. Lemos by submission (arm triangle choke)


155 lbs.: Clay Guida vs. Claudio Puelles

Round 1: Puelles tries a head kick. Guida pushing forward, shoots against the fence. He avoids a guillotine threat to complete it into guard. Puelles looking to attack an arm a minute in. Now a triangle but he hasn’t got it fully cinched. He switches to an armbar, then an omoplata. Two minutes to go.

Guida manages to slip free, but as he tries to work from half guard, Puelles spins for a lightning-fast kneebar that forces a quick tap.

Final result: Puelles def. Guida by submission (kneebar)


125 lbs.: Maycee Barber vs. Montana De La Rosa

Round 1: Barber punches her way into a body lock. Knees to the thigh. One minute in. Foot stomps, elbow. De La Rosa reverses on the fence, counters a takedown into top position. Barber scrambles free with an underhook and puts her on the fence again. Two minutes in. Jockeying for position. De La Rosa fishes for a trip, gets reversed, reverses in turn. Two minutes to go.

Barber reverses, throws knees downstairs. Heavy elbows on the break, then a trip. De La Rosa gets back up with a whizzer, eats another elbow with a minute to go. Left hands from Barber inside. Heavy shots, elbow on the break. De La Rosa reverses. 10-9 Barber.

Round 2: De La Rosa punches into the clinch and looks for a trip before taking her to the fence. They trade knees downstairs a minute in. De La Rosa drags her to a knee. Barber tries to stand and De La Rosa jumps on her back. One hook in two minutes in. Now both. Barber trying to turn into guard, does so. De La Rosa tosses up a triangle. Barber stacking with two minutes to go.

Barber looks for half guard, drops a good hammerfist. Elbows. One minute to go. More shots from Barber and De La Rosa manages to turn into top position. Elbow from her back. 10-9 Barber.

Round 3: Barber punches her way inside, gets taken to the fence. Looking for the back, starts teeing off with punches. One minute in. More clinch punches from Barber. Heavy elbow after getting a bit of space. Two minutes in. Shoulder strike. de La Rosa manages to press her against the fence again. Two minutes to go.

Jockeying for position, knees from Barber. Sneaky elbow, looking for the back. One minute to go. Solid knee and right hand. She muscles De La Rosa to her knees. They trade knees and De La Rosa lands a solid elbow before they tie up again. More Barber knees. One last elbow from De La Rosa. 10-9 Barber.

Final result: Barber def. De La Rosa by unanimous decision

Round 1: Jourdain tries a head kick, fires a body kick, and gets taken down into side control. Vannata looking for the back, lands a couple shots before Jourdain manages to stand and separate. Slick combo from Vannata. Teep behind it. Another nice punching sequence. Jourdain catches him coming in with a straight left and puts him on his butt, then threatens a one-arm guillotine. Jourdain manages to close guard and go palm-to-palm, forcing a tap.

Final result: Jourdain def. Vannata by submission (guillotine choke)


190 lbs.: Marc-Andre Barriault vs. Jordan Wright

Round 1: Low kicks from Wright as he circles. Barriault marching forward, lands an overhand right. Knees from Wright in the clinch, uppercuts from Barriault in return. Nasty body shots by Barriault and Wright shoots. He gets Barriault down, lands short shots on the way up. Two minutes in. Barriault threatening a guillotine, wraps it up and sweeps into mount to force the tap.

Final result: Barriault def. Wright by submission (guillotine choke)


170 lbs.: Dwight Grant vs. Sergey Khandozhko

Round 1: Grant firing the jab, lands an overhand right. Khandozhko left hook, Grant overhand. Good counter right from Grant a minute in. They trade in center cage and a left hook sits Grant down. Khandozhko lets him up, then goes back to stalking. Grant cuffs him with a right hand two minutes in. Another on the counter. Khandozhko steadily advancing. Counter hook from Grant. Two minutes in.

Another counter hook, then another to answer a low blow. Khandozhko looking for the right cross. Quick exchange. Suddenly, an overhand right takes out Khandozhko’s legs. Grant jumps on him, has to settle for guard. Khandozhko scrambles up with a minute to go and puts him on the fence. Looking for a takedown, rebuffed by a fence grab. 10-9 Grant.

Round 2: Early exchange. Body kick from Khandozhko. Jab upstairs. He fires a naked low kick and Grant drops him with a counter right. Might have been more balance than anything, as Khandozhko pops back up. One minute in. Body shot lands for Khandozhko. Both fire two-pieces. Counter right by Khandozhko. Continuing to advance two minutes in. Khandozhko left hook, Grant body shot and left hook upstairs. Two minutes to go.

Khandozhko sending out jabs. They trade left hooks in the center. Khandozhko body kick and jab. Hard left hook by Grant, who gets wobbled by one in return. Khandozhko follows with a 1-2, then a shovel hook. One minute to go. Stiff jab, then a looping hook that drops Grant. Another one puts him down again and Khandozhko swarms him, prompting the ref to step in as Grant tries to get to his feet.

Final result: Khandozhko def. Grant by TKO (punches)


205 lbs.: Tyson Pedro vs. Ike Villanueva

Round 1: Tentative start. Neither man committing to anything a minute in. Snap kick from Pedro. Counter jab connects. Two minutes in. Another front kick strays low. Low kick to body kick. Villanueva falls short with a flurry. Hard right hand wobbles Villanueva, who gets a reprieve when Pedro knees him in the junk. Villanueva tries to come back strong afterwards. Two minutes to go.

Right hand from Villanueva, rest of the combo misses. Pedro low kick. One minute to go. Another hard low kick appears to compromise Villanueva’s leg. Another. Snap kick to the body. Villanueva falls short with a flurry. Pedro 1-2, then a calf kick that floors Villanueva. Pedro puts him to sleep with the follow-up punches.

Final result: Pedro def. Villanueva by KO (punches)


135 lbs.: Cameron Else vs. Aoriqileng

Round 1: Hard low kicks from both. Aoriqileng tries a two-piece. Big exchange on the fence and Else grabs a body lock, only to get taken down in return. Else pops back up a minute in. Foot stomps from Aoriqileng. They separate. Low-high 3-2 from Aoriqileng, who tries a flying knee. Both throwing heat. Another body shot and this one sends Else to his knees. Aoriqileng jumps on him, can’t polish him off. Hard ground-and-pound to the body and he takes Else’s back, continuing to drop bombs. The punishment continues until the ref intervenes.

Final result: Aoriqileng def. Else by TKO (punches)


170 lbs.: Preston Parsons vs. Evan Elder

Round 1: Instant takedown from Parsons, hunting the back. Awkward sort of rear crucifix position as Elder tries to shake him off. He does so and ends up on top in half guard. Nice sweep by Parsons to get to his feet a minute in. Elder tossing out kicks, gets buzzed by a left hook. Parsons follows up with a hard right cross and ties up. Two minutes in. Elder tries a whizzer kick and separates. Counter left hook by Parsons. Heavy right cross. Elder loops an overhand right that appears to wobble Parsons for a second. Elder body kick, Parsons counter right. Two minutes to go.

Parsons continuing to stalk, eats a pair of body kicks. Elder tries to go high, eats a low kick and right hand. Parson tries a level elbow. Lovely double-leg puts him on top in half guard. Short punches and elbows. One minute to go. Arm triangle setup, trying to pass. Loses the choke, but gets mount. Solid elbow and he reapplies the arm triangle, which Elder waits out. 10-9 Parsons.

Round 2: Parsons right back on the attack and he slams Elder into guard. Elder considers a triangle, nothing doing. Half guard for Parsons and he gets that arm triangle again as he takes mount. Loses it, retains position. Nasty elbow but Elder slips out and stands a minute in. Parsons still advancing. Hard lead right by Parsons, who blocks a head kick and lands a leg kick. Another nice double-leg into half guard. Full mount not long after. Elder’s game, just outmatched so far. Elbows and punches. These are getting heavier. Full back control, hunting the RNC. Elder manages to turn into guard with two minutes to go.

Parsons sweeps right back into mount and gets the arm triangle again. This one’s deep. He steps into side control and puts in the squeeze. One minute to go. Incredible defense by Elder and he ends up on top in side control. Parsons gets to his feet and they separate. Trading punches. 10-9 Parsons.

Round 3: Elder body kick, Parsons straight right. Elder denies the first takedown, eats an elbow before they separate. Trading low kicks. Spinning back kick attempt. Overhand right from Elder, who eats a knee and right cross a minute in. Low kick and left hook by Parsons, who shoots and gets sprawled on. They separate. Good uppercut from Elder as they continue to trade. He shoots, gets swept immediately into half guard. Elbows from Parsons. Briefly considers the arm triangle. He looks for mount, gets it and drops some shots. Shoulder strikes. More elbows. Elder regains half guard. Back to mount, more shots piling up. Elder still trying to roll, nearly gives up the RNC. More damage by Parsons and one final arm triangle attempt before pounding again. 10-8 Parsons.

Final result: Parsons def. Elder by unanimous decision


205 lbs.: Philipe Lins vs. Marcin Prachnio

Round 1: Both toss out low kicks to start. Prachnio circling, Lins advancing. Prachnio busy with his kicks. One minute in. Side kick catches Lins on one leg. Lins shoots, eats knees, powers through to land on top. One hook in as Prachnio tries to rise. Prachnio turns to face him and separates two minutes in. Both men keeping their distance. Prachnio body kick on the counter. Low kick, attempted head kick with two minutes to go.

Another click head kick attempt from Prachnio. Lins bulls his way into another takedown attempt. Prachnio reverses and separates. One minute to go. Kick exchange. Lins opens up with punches and tries to shoot again. More good defense by Prachnio and a knee on the way up. Knees to the thigh before the bell. 10-9 Prachnio.

Round 2: Big exchange to start and Lins stings him with a right hand. They continue to slug it out until Prachnio ties up, landing knees to the body. Another trade, 1-2 from Lins. Continuing to fire and a right around the guard forces Prachnio to shoot. Lins stalking, tanks a low kick. Hard teep knocks Lins over and Prachnio ties up again a minute in. Knees to the leg and body. Lins reverses. He changes levels, denied, eats another knee downstairs. They separate two minutes in. Prachnio ducks a 1-2, gets taken to the fence. He reverses and changes levels, kneeing the thigh. Two minutes to go.

More knees to the thigh. Lins trying to land body shots as he defends. They separate. Prachnio looking tired, eats a body shot. Heavy combo by Lins and a Thai knee when Prachnio ties up. One minute to go. Lins fires a 2-1 and shoots. Body shots against the fence. Solid shots on the break. 10-9 Lins.

Round 3: Low kick from Lins. Prachnio with a tired-looking spin. Lins responds with a body lock takedown. Prachnio works his way back up a minute in. Knees to the body. Lins keeping him pressed against the fence. He changes levels again and dumps Prachnio to the ground. Prachnio turns to his knees and looks for his own takedown two minutes in, then they separate. Good exchange on the fence. Prachnio ties up and gets taken down for it. Good shots from the top and on the way up from Lins. Prachnio whiffs on a head kick. Two minutes to go.

Body shots from Prachnio, then a hard low kick. He crashes into the clinch once again and Lins reverses. Separation. They’re both spent at this point. Combo from Lins with a minute to go as Prachnio launches kicks. 1-2 on the fence, then a double-leg attempt. Rear waist lock. Prachnio holding onto a kimura grip. 10-9 Lins.

Final result: Lins def. Prachnio by unanimous decision


170 lbs.: Dean Barry vs. Mike Jackson

Round 1: Barry tossing out side kicks, misses on a 1-2. He’s really loading up. Jackson’s avoiding these big right hands with ease so far. Jackson avoids most of a flurry, then lands a counter right a minute in. Barry continuing to try and explode in. There’s a decent left hook inside. Lead right. Spinning back kick catches Jackson in the nuts. He takes a couple minutes to recover and grouse over the situation before returning to action. More side kicks from Barry two minutes in. Right hand finally lands on Jackson and Barry tries to follow up before denying a takedown. 1-2 from Barry, still putting too much behind the right hand. There’s a nice combo on the fence and he sends Jackson to his knees with a good right. Two minutes to go.

Jackson sweeps his way up with deep half, can’t complete the takedown. Barry jumps back on him and goes to work with punches and knees, then throws away the momentum by gouging him in the eye mid-flurry. It’s a nasty one and Jackson can’t continue. Let’s see if this is a DQ or NC.

Final result: Jackson def. Barry by DQ (eye gouge)
