Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) returns to its APEX facility in Las Vegas, Nevada, for the UFC Vegas 63 mixed martial arts (MMA) event TONIGHT (Sat., Oct. 29, 2022), streaming LIVE on ESPN+. UFC Vegas 63 will be headlined by the 145-pound showdown between Top 10 featherweight contenders Calvin Kattar and Arnold Allen. Before that five-round clash of styles gets underway, veteran welterweight Max Griffin looks to bounce back into the win column by turning away 170-pound “Dirty Bird” Tim Means in the UFC Vegas 63 co-main event. Elsewhere on the card, Dustin Jacoby and Khalil Rountree go to war at light heavyweight not long after Andrei Arlovski and Marcos Rogerio de Lima collide at 265 pounds.

UFC VEGAS 63 PLAY-BY-PLAY:

145 lbs.: Calvin Kattar vs. Arnold Allen

Round 1: Low kick from Allen. Both fall short with straights. One minute in. Still no clean connections. Allen tries a head kick. Body kicks. 1-2 from Kattar. Low kick two minutes in. Allen tries to double up the left, falls short with a body shot. Kattar leg kick. Mostly sparring so far. Step-in knee to right cross. Two minutes to go.

Straight left by Allen. Two more in quick succession, then a nasty flurry on the fence. Kattar weathers it, tries an elbow. Exchanging in center cage. Hard straight lefts by Allen with a minute to go. Another in combination. Straight left again. Kattar trying to chase him down. He tries a flying knee and appears to blow his knee out on landing. Allen jumps on him and looks for an anaconda choke. 10-9 Allen.

Round 2: Kattar seems to be moving alright, so on we go. Well, nevermind; Allen kicks his good leg and the weight on the bad leg causes it to fold again. That’s it.

Final result: Allen def. Kattar by TKO (knee injury)


170 lbs.: Max Griffin vs. Tim Means

Round 1: Means lands a low kick, checks one in return. Long hook from Griffin. More kicks from Means keeping Griffin at a distance. Solid left hook by Griffin, then a straight right through the guard that sends Means to the mat. Side control for Griffin a minute in. Means scrambles up and puts him on the fence. Solid knee, eats a right on the exit. Two minutes in. Means tries to catch him leaning with a knee. Low kicks. 1-2. Head kick blocked. Two minutes to go.

Good exchange and Griffin connects with a right on the exit. Big 3-2 and body shot. More kicks from Means. Left to the body. Griffin double jab with a minute to go, then a straight right that buzzes Means. Means tries to spin, lands a cuffing check hook. Griffin fires a double-leg, locks his hands, eats some elbows. 10-9 Griffin.

Round 2: Trading punches early. Means doing a lot of slapping for some reason. Solid body shot a minute in. More kicks. Means body shot, Griffin long right. Means trying to fire flurries as Griffin steps in. Snap kick downstairs. Two minutes in. Counter left from Means. Griffin not throwing near as much this round. Means body shots. Front kick downstairs. Two minutes to go.

Means tries a jump knee. Griffin shoots, denied. Body and low kicks. He’s moving, just not throwing anything as he does. Means low kick. One minute to go. Straight right stings Means as he changes levels and Means pulls guard. Means considers a triangle setup. Still 10-9 Means on all the early work.

Round 3: Means aggressive early. He tries a takedown, lands a knee to the body on the way up, gets taken down into guard. Trying heel kicks while stuck on his back a minute in. Short shots from Griffin, keeping Means jammed against the fence. Two minutes in. Griffin staying busy. Means looks for a triangle and uses the threat to get to his feet. Griffin immediately changes levels with two minutes to go.

Griffin locks his hands and puts Means on his seat. Means trying to use the fence to stand. He makes it up with a minute to go. Solid knees and he reverses for his own level change. Back elbow and he takes Griffin down. Hard knee to the body on the way up, slams Griffin to the mat at the bell. 10-9 Griffin but it was close.

Final result: Griffin def. Means by split decision


265 lbs.: Waldo Cortes-Acosta vs. Jared Vanderaa

Round 1: Low kick from Vanderaa to start. Cortes-Acosta looking for jabs. Slowly advancing. 1-2 to the body a minute in. Overhand falls short. Vanderaa low kick in return. Quick jabs from Cortes-Acosta, eats another low kick. Two minutes in. Hard combo by Cortes-Acosta, eats another leg kick. Another quick jab, another low kick comes back at him. Two straight rights connect. Two minutes to go.

Cortes-Acosta advancing, Vanderaa circling. More jabs from Cortes-Acosta. 1-2 downstairs, another jab. Front kick to the body. Low kick from Vanderaa. One minute to go. Another low kick. Cortes-Acosta continuing to walk after him. Another low kick visibly stings Cortes-Acosta, who switches stance and immediately eats low kicks to his lead leg. 10-9 Vanderaa.

Round 2: Cortes-Acosta back on the advance, eating more leg kicks. More leg kicks. One minute in. Cortes-Acosta wading after him, swinging heat. Vanderaa tries a throw, can’t get it. Jabs from Cortes-Acosta, who’s limping but yelling at Vanderaa whenever he eats a leg kick. Two minutes in. Cortes-Acosta tossing out jabs, eats a body kick. Big flurry by Cortes-Acosta and Vanderaa ties up, unloading in the clinch. They separate with two minutes to go.

Cortes-Acosta tries his own low kick. More jabs. One minute to go. Cortes-Acosta continuing to land jabs. Vanderaa low kicks. Knee and body kick. Good shots as they trade. Once more trade on the fence. 10-9 Vanderaa.

Round 3: Cortes-Acosta continuing to pump his jab. Vanderaa low kicks. One minute in. Cortes-Acosta lands a lead right. Counter hook and jab land for Cortes-Acosta. More low kicks by Vanderaa. Two minutes in. Four-piece from Cortes-Acosta. Jab exchange. More jabs by Cortes-Acosta. Two minutes to go.

Clubbing right inside. More Vanderaa leg kicks. Both swing right hooks. Jabs continuing to land for Cortes-Acosta. Some showboating. One minute to go. Vanderaa leg kick. Vanderaa does his own little dance, lands a leg kick. 1-2 from Cortes-Acosta, low kick from Vanderaa. Kicking each other in the leg. Cortes-Acosta avoids a head kick and tries to blitz. 10-9 Cortes-Acosta.

185 lbs.: Josh Fremd vs. Tresean Gore

Round 1: Early jab from Fremd. Gore changes levels and avoids a guillotine for the takedown. Fremd gets to his knees, caught in the front headlock. One minute in. Fremd pulls his head free, gets put on the fence. Gore changes levels and lands a big slam before latching onto Fremd’s back. Two minutes in. Fremd scrambles to his feet. Low kick. Stiff jab by Gore. Two minutes to go.

Gore getting the batter of the jab battle. Fremd tries a Brazilian kick, lands a low kick and jabs. Teep to answer a low kick. Fremd 1-2 to flying knee to takedown attempt. Jockeying for position with a minute to go. Gore puts him on teh fence and they trade on the break. LEft hook falls short. 1-1-2 by Fremd. Low kick, flying knee, tight uppercut. Knee to cap things off. 10-9 Fremd.

Round 2: Fremd peppers him with jabs, follows with a right, avoids teh counters. Trading low kicks. Clubbing rights from Fremd into a single-leg attempt. Gore responds with one of the tightest guillotines you’ll ever see, and despite Fremd’s efforts, the lights go out before long.

Final result: Gore def. Fremd by technical submission (guillotine choke)


205 lbs.: Dustin Jacoby vs. Khalil Rountree

Round 1: Rountree answers a low kick with a straight left through the guard. Overhand left hits guard. Big 3-2 and low kick. Jacoby tries a head kick, lands low kicks a minute in. Rountree whiffs on a two-piece, eats a right hook and low kick. Body kick and double jab from Jacoby, continuing to sneak in leg kicks. Two minutes in. Good left hook lands for him. He’s managing range quite well, staying away from Rountreee’s bigger shots. Rountree lands low kicks, whiffs on an elbow, eats a left hook. Counter flurry. Jabs from Jacoby, fighting the lead hand. Right hook with two minutes to go.

Quick Jacoby body jab and low kick. Rountree low kick. Jacoby backs him to the fence and fires a combo. Level elbow falls short. Hard body shot from Jacoby met by a level elbow. Sharp combo splits Rountree’s guard. Counter left by Rountree with a minute to go. Big exchange and Rountree knocks him back with a left hand. One minute to go. Jacoby lands a body shot, eats a leg kick and cuffing left around the guard. Jacoby peppering the guard, then shoots unsuccessfully in the last 10 seconds. He tries a jumping something, eats a body shot. 10-9 Jacoby.

Round 2: Rountree right hook and low kicks. Big left just misses. Trading jabs, Nice high-tempo exchanges in center cage. Jacoby whiffs on an elbow, splits the guard with a 1-2 a minute in. Constant volume from Jacoby as Rountree loads up on counters. More peppering shots by Jacoby, who backs away from the return fire. Two minutes in. Low kick exchange. Heavy straight left by Jacoby, his best shot in a while. Knee to the body, multiple jabs. Rountree’s output is flagging as he tries to match Jacoby’s straight shots. Two minutes to go.

Jacoby continuing to avoid the big shots and get in his own work. They trade hooks. More kicks coming from Rountree, then a clean left hook. Jacoby hauls him to the fence with a minute to go. They separate. Jacoby to the body, more jabs. Rountree straight left. Right hook. Jacoby falls short with a head kick, lands a left hook, eats a 1-2. 10-9 Jacoby.

Round 3: Jacoby answers an early combo with a body shot. Rountree finding the mark early this round, eats another low kick and body shot. Trading in center cage, big straight left by Rountree. Quick jab a minute in. Jacoby has a head kick blocked, lands more low kicks while avoiding fire. Low kick from Rountree in return. Another heavy low kick by Jacoby. Rountree trying to land catch-and-pitch counters. Solid punches from both men two minutes in. Another straight left connects for Rountree, then a check hook and some hard knees when Jacoby tries to tie up. Rountree really is landing well this round compared to before. Two minutes to go.

They trade right hands. Big counter left and knee from Rountree. Clash of heads. Jacoby not managing range as well as before. Another long left on the counter. One minute to go. Both throw knees in the clinch. Jacoby tries a single-leg, lands a two-piece on the exit. Left from Rountree in return. Jacoby lands a knee, eats a massive straight left and knee in return. Trying and failing to keep Rountree at bay with his jab. Now there’s a nice combo by Jacoby. Another, out of reach of the counters. Fun fight. 10-9 Rountree.

Final result: Rountree def. Jacoby by split decision


185 lbs.: Roman Dolidze vs. Phil Hawes

Round 1: Both tossing out kicks to start. Dolidze tries a counter flurry. One minute in. Hawes avoids a head kick, avoids a head kick and long right. Dolidze body kick, Hawes straight right. Another quick right from Hawes. He ducks a left hand and takes Dolidze down into guard. Dolidze immediately throwing elbows from his back. Two minutes in. Heavy elbows. He goes from armbar to leglock attempt. Hawes’ knee gives out and Dolidze lets go, but Hawes is still trying to fight. Two minutes to go.

Dolidze walking after a hobbling Hawes. Jab exchange. Hawes’ right leg is not functioning properly. Dolidze patiently advancing, throwing jabs. Left hook by Hawes. One minute to go. DOlidze overhand right and Hawes’ knee gives out. As Hawes tries to stand, Dolidze hammers him with punches until the lights go out.

Final result: Dolidze def. Hawes by KO (punches)


265 lbs.: Andrei Arlovski vs. Marcos Rogerio de Lima

Round 1: Rogerio de Lima marching forward. Heavy exchange and a left hook sends Arlovski to the mat. Rogerio de Lima follows him down into guard, then moves to half. Full mount a minute in. Back mount, dropping punches. Looking for a neck crank, softens him up with a couple punches, then sneaks his forearm under the chin for the finish. Arlovski’s nose is looking a little Picasso afterwards.

Final result: Rogerio de Lima def. Arlovski by submission (rear naked choke)


185 lbs.: Joseph Holmes vs. Jun Yong Park

Round 1: Solid low kick from Holmes. Looking to jab. Controlling range with punches a minute in. Park steadily advancing. More potshots from Holmes off the back foot. Park takes a shot to the eye, tells the ref he’s fine. Solid cross lands for Holmes. Two minutes in. Park catches a body kick, can’t use it. There’s a combination from Park but Holmes puts him on the fence. Holmes tries an elbow on the break. Park catches a kick and jumps on Holmes’ back as he tries to stand. Two minutes to go.

Holmes latched firmly onto Park’s wrist to prevent him from cinching anything up. Short punches from Park. Both hooks in. One minute to go. Park cinching up the choke, Holmes still doing a good job of fighting his hands. Now Holmes manages to sweep and looks for his own RNC. Decent punches. 10-9 Holmes.

Round 2: Low kick and 1-2 from Holmes. Park grabs double unders and puts him on the fence. Lovely falling back take. Holmes trying to roll, ends up mounted. One minute in. One hook for Park, chipping away with right hands. Holmes regains half guard, then gets his back taken two minutes in. Park flattens him out, wraps up the RNC, can’t quite get it. Back to mount, dropping punches. More right hands piling up form back mount. Another RNC from Park and this one’s deep enough to force a tap.

Final result: Park def. Holmes by submission (rear naked choke)


145 lbs.: Steve Garcia vs. Chase Hooper

Round 1: Garcia landing heavy left hands right off the bat. One clearly hurdts Hooper, and when Hooper stands agian, another left drops him hard. Garcia waves him up and slams home a leg kick, then drops him with another straight left. He’s not willing to follow him down, so he legs him up again. Hooper somehow still throwing with him, trying to land spinning back fists and getting clipped. Another counter left by Garcia floors Hooper yet again and a few hammerfists polish him off.

Final result: Garcia def. Hooper by TKO (punches)


125 lbs.: Cody Durden vs. Carlos Mota

Round 1: Stiff jab from Durden. Mota stalking forward. Huge 1-2 from Durden and he bowls Mota over into side control. One minute in. Mota looking for guard. Durden postures up for a hard right hand and has to fight out of an armbar-triangle sequence two minutes in. Half guard for Durden. Two minutes to go.

Short right hands. Now he postures up for some bigger shots. Half butterfly, now full guard with a minute to go. Durden postures up late, lands an elbow. 10-9 Durden.

Round 2: Durden shoots, denied. Mota lands a body jab, then one to the head. Durden hunting a single-leg, switches to a double. He drives hard and downs Mota a minute in. Full guard. Mota considers an armbar, nothing there. Durden chipping away against the fence. Two minutes to go.

Mota not doing much off of his back. As I type that, he wraps up an armbar. Durden stacks him and drops an elbow after getting free. One minute to go. Mota considers another armbar, still nothing. Durden lands some more short GnP in response. 10-9 Durden.

Round 3: Low kicks for Durden to start. Mota fires body shots, tries to limp-leg out of a shot, and tries a rolling kneebar when Durden keeps his grip. Durden looking for the back, one hook in a minute in. Both hooks, body triangle two minutes in. Durden attempts to flatten him out. More attempts. Mota turns into top guard with two minutes to go and waves Durden to his feet.

Mota stalking, denies the initial shot, but Durden drives through and avoids another rolling leglock attempt. One minute to go. Awkward position. Mota swats him with a surprisingly hard hammerfists and they thump each other from an odd sort of 50/50. Mota tries a last-ditch leglock, then cracks Durden with a last-second body shot. 10-9 Durden.

Final result: Durden def. Mota by unanimous decision


135 lbs.: Christian Rodriguez vs. Joshua Weems

Round 1: Rodriguez lands a clubbing left as they trade in the center. Weems mobile as usual. Quick exchanges. Body kick from Weems met by a spinning back fist. Another Weems body kick. Rodriguez herding him to the fence a minute in. 1-2. Quick counter right. Rodriguez tries a flying knee and ties up. Weems elbows. He reverses, lands another elbow, and looks to change levels two minutes in. Rodriguez sneaks in an elbow as they jockey for position. Nice trip by Weems puts him on top. Rodriguez spins to his feet, avoiding a front headlock. Quick two-piece from Weems into another level change. Two minutes to go.

Weems pulls guard. Rodriguez stands over him, avoids an upkick, and lets him up. Spinning elbow attempt by Rodriguez gives Weems the body lock and Weems scores another takedown. This time, though, Rodriguez is in position for a guillotine, and he switches to an anaconda as he sweeps into top position. He slowly rotates and tightens it up until Weems taps.

Final result: Rodriguez def. Weems by submission (anaconda choke)
