Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) returns to its APEX facility in Las Vegas, Nevada, for the UFC Vegas 80 mixed martial arts (MMA) event TONIGHT (Sat., Oct. 7, 2023), streaming LIVE on ESPN+. UFC Vegas 80 will be headlined by the 155-pound showdown between lightweight bruisers Grant Dawson and Bobby Green. Before that five-round clash of styles gets underway, middleweight finishers Joe Pyfer and Abdul Razak Alhassan collide in the UFC Vegas 80 co-main event. Elsewhere on the card, welterweight standouts Joaquin Buckley and Alex Morono hook ‘em up at 170 pounds.

155 lbs.: Grant Dawson vs. Bobby Green

Round 1: Green with his hands down as usual, avoiding Dawson’s overhand rights. The next time Dawson tries to step in, Green meets him with a piston of a left cross that sends him slumping to the mat. Green swarms him with punches and hammerfists to cap off an improbably fast upset win.

185 lbs.: Abdul Razak Alhassan vs. Joe Pyfer

Round 1: Pyfer hits an easy takedown in the opening seconds, then clamps down on a standing arm triangle. Alhassan manages to wrench his head free and separate. Pyfer body kick, overhand right from Alhassan. Another body kick and two-piece from Pyfer. He wings a left hand, then wraps up a body lock and slams Alhassan to the mat. Alhassan threatens a guillotine, then stands. Slowly retreating. Two minutes in. Body kick from Alhassan. Nice low kick. Pyfer tries a jab and front kick. 3-2 blocked. Alhassan whiffs on a home run overhand with two minutes to go.

Nice overhand right buzzes Alhassan and Pyfer follows to the body. Pyfer tries to flurry, lands a jab. Slick low kick behind a left hook. Both land body kicks. One minute to go. Pyfer low kick. Alhassan backs him to the fence, but Pyfer slips the overhand right and spins him around before firing a flurry against the guard. Jabs landing for Pyfer. 10-9 Pyfer.

Round 2: Pyfer ducks an overhand right and gets a body lock. Knee on the exit. Calf kick from Alhassan seems to bother Pyfer. Another one and he’s definitely feeling it. Alhassan not jumping on him a minute in. There’s anotehr low kick from Alhassan. He tries to follow up with a flurry and Pyfer responds with a high-amplitude slam. Pyfer quickly wraps up the arm triangle and hops to the opposite side. Alhassan appears to tap with his hand closed and the ref hesitates, unsure if he was trying to strike. Alhassan goes out seconds later and it’s moot anyway.

Final result: Pyfer def. Alhassan by submission (arm triangle choke)


170 lbs.: Joaquin Buckley vs. Alex Morono

Round 1: Buckley sprints across the Octagon for a shot in the opening seconds, but Morono fights it off and gets some distance. Body kick from Morono. Head kick attempt. One minute in. Buckley falling short with most of his strikes so far. Morono tries a right hand and gets cracked by a two-piece counter. He quickly gets his bearings back and catches a low kick before coming back with a right hand. Two minutes in. Buckley tries an awkward wheel kick. Morono lead right, uppercut from Buckley. Morono continuing to manage distance well. Two minutes to go.

Buckley tries to blitz, eating counters on the way. Flying knee falls short. Good exchange, left hand lands for Buckley. Blast double puts Buckley on top with a minute to go. Morono quickly spins for an armbar, then tries to transition to a triangle. Buckley postures free and lets him up. Buckley shoots again and slams his way out of a guillotine at the bell. 10-9 Buckley.

Round 2: Buckley throws a head kick, but loses his balance. Back in steady pursuit. Morono’s defense is still holding up well, he’s just not landing anything big. Buckley falls short a minute in. Another winging blitz to no effect. Glancing potshots from Morono. Buckley tries to explode against the fence, can’t land clean. Two minutes in. Good body kick gets Morono’s attention. Ugly exchange. Morono circles away from a blitz. Two minutes to go.

Morono again avoids a blitz and fires some counters. Buckley body shot. Buckley ducks a spin and comes back with an overhand right that rattles Morono. Flurry behind it. One minute to go. Buckley leads to the body, whiffs upstairs, then lands an arcing overhand left. He punches his way into double underhooks against the fence. They trade knees on the exit. 10-9 Buckley.

Round 3: Buckley comes out swinging again and a wide left hook finds the mark against the fence. Morono weathers the storm and gets back to his preferred distance. One minute in. Lead left downstairs from Buckley. Upstairs this time, then back to the body soon after. He takes a front kick flush to the cup with a hollow thud, but elects to keep going and lands a good body kick. More good body shots, then an awkward exchange against the fence. Uppercut to right cross. I think Morono’s jaw may be damaged. He’s not staying out of Buckley’s reach quite as well two minutes in. Buckley tries a telegraphed spin and gets taken down, but pops back up and continues to land heavy punches. Morono’s gas tank seemingly on its last legs with two minutes to go.

Brief clinch. Long right from Buckley. Morono shoots, denied. Buckley takes top guard and fires hammerfists as his corner screams at him to finish the fight. Solid punches with a minute to go. Buckley elects to stand and Morono follows. An awkward right hand clips Morono and he pulls guard again, eating two elbows as he does. 10-8 Buckley.

Final result: Buckley def. Morono by unanimous decision


155 lbs.: Drew Dober vs. Ricky Glenn

Round 1: Southpaw vs. southpaw for this one. Body jab from Dober. Glenn tries a head kick, eats a low kick. Dober finds the mark with some solid punches a minute in. Low kick behind them. More low kicks, then a left downstairs. He follows with a 1-2 to the head that visibly stings Glenn. Dober continues to throw heat until a left catches Glenn leaning and sends him to the ground. Dober tries to open up on top, but some blatant glove grabs from Glenn prevent it. Instead, he lets Glenn up and fires more sledgehammers. A huge straight left floors Glenn again and this time Dober’s able to hammer him for the finish.

Final result: Dober def. Glenn by TKO (punches)


145 lbs.: Bill Algeo vs. Alexander Hernandez

Round 1: Algeo taunts after avoiding a head kick. Low kick lands for him. Hernandez counters a body knee with a two-piece. Algeo tries to go low-high with kicks. One minute in. Body kick attempt. Two-piece to spinning back kick. Algeo doing well at range so far, catches Hernandez leaning with a head kick. Hernandez body shot. Two minutes in. Solid right hand from Hernandez to answer a low kick. Side kick from Algeo briefly knocks Hernandez over. Glancing spinning back kick. Both men busy with low kicks. Two minutes to go.

Algeo body kick blocked. Slick jab. Spinning back kick attempt. Long right lands for Hernandez, who tries a double jab. Low kick and body shot. Algeo tries a hook kick, lands a low kick. One minute to go. Solid right to the body from Hernandez. Lots of movement, not a lot of thrown strikes for the next little bit. Glancing head kick by Algeo, who attacks the body before the bell. 10-9 Algeo, I suppose.

Round 2: Hernandez aggressive early, gets backed off by a looping right. Knee from Algeo as Hernandez fires combinations. Hernandez low kick met by a two-piece. One minute in. Things slow back down, with Algeo trying to sharpshoot. Hernandez body shot and he walks into what he claims is an eye poke; replay shows it was Algeo’s thumb, though you could argue it was one of the knuckles. Hernandez takes a little over two minutes to recover before returning to action. Head and body kicks from Algeo, 1-2 from Hernandez. Two minutes in. Hernandez finding the mark with head and body punches. Solid right hand from Algeo. Two nasty right hands from Hernandez in return and Algeo waves him on. Algeo straight left with two minutes to go.

Algeo splits the guard with a jab, then uncorks a looping left that puts Hernandez on his rear. More good left hands as Hernandez stands, but Hernandez manages to tie up and take him to the fence. Hernandez whiffs an elbow on the exit. Body kick from Algeo, overhand right just misses. One minute to go. Algeo tries a flying knee, lands more body kicks. Spinning back fist met by a Hernandez right hand. Glancing head kick from Hernandez. Body shot, hard straight left. 10-9 Algeo.

Round 3: Hernandez not showing the quit in him you’d expect as he puts Algeo against the fence. They trade on the exit. Heavy right straights from both. Hernandez body shot. Algeo straight left, glancing straights from Hernandez in return. One minute in. Counter 2-3 and body kick by Algeo. Trading jabs. Sneaky kick from Algeo, who chases Hernandez across the cage with a combo. Hard left hand and body kick. Hernandez answers to the body. Two minutes to go. Algeo falls short with a looping right. Hernandez 1-2, then a nice counter right. Straight left to leg kick. Hernandez claims another eye poke, but the ref insists it was a punch and they resume. Algeo tries a spinning back kick and pops him with a straight left with two minutes to go.

Hernandez body kick, tries to follow upstairs. Algeo tries to blitz. They exchange body kicks, straight left from Algeo, Hernandez jab. Nice 3-2 from Hernandez. One minute to go. Long left hand in combination. Algeo continuing to chill at range. Both attack the body. Right hands from both. Algeo takes him down in the final seconds, then tries a body kick on the way up. 10-9 Algeo.

115 lbs.: Diana Belbita vs. Karolina Kowalkiewicz

Round 1: Early aggression from Kowalkiewicz. Nice uppercut and jab. Knee in the clinch, 2-1. Clinch to body lock. Belbita lands a head-and-arm throw but Kowalkiewicz uses it to take her back. Full mount a minute in. Belbita quickly sweeps into guard. Flurry and head kick as Kowalkiewicz gets to her feet. Trading punches. Two minutes in. Kowalkiewicz punches her way into the clinch. Dragging Belbita along the fence. Nice elbow on the exit. Counter uppercut by Belbita. Two minutes to go.

Belbita lands a knee the next time Kowalkiewicz tries to tie up. Good punching exchange in the center. Uppercuts from Kowalkiewicz. Nice work with jabs and straight rights. Spinning back fist whiffs and Belbita lands a hard knee on the exit. One minute to go. Heavy cross from Kowalkiewicz, Belbita answers in kind. Another 1-2 lands for Belbita. Spinning elbow by Kowalkiewicz and she takes Belbita to the fence. Trip takedown at the bell. 10-9 Kowalkiewicz.

Round 2: They meet in the center and get right to trading strikes. Solid punches and kicks from both sides. Belbita body shot in the center. Kowalkiewicz gets the clinch and takes her to the fence. She changes levels a minute in, can’t find the single-leg, settles for landing a knee. Kowalkiewicz uppercuts, Belbita overhand right. Jabs from Belbita. Kowalkiewicz body shots. Two minutes in. Jab exchange in the center. Belbita answers an uppercut with a right hand and body shot. Heavy jabs from both, Kowalkiewicz landing the better ones. More jabs piling up, body shot with two minutes to go.

Belbita puts her on the fence, avoiding a whizzer kick attempt. Sneaky elbow by Kowalkiewicz. One minute to go. They separate and Kowalkiewicz goes back to the jab. Nice uppercut. She catches a kick and takes Belbita to the fence. Head-and-arm throw from Belbita puts her on top in guard. Kowalkiewicz swats away from her back until the bell. 10-9 Kowalkiewicz

Round 3: Belbita trying to pursue behind her jab. Kowalkiewicz firing her own jab in response. Trading in center cage. One minute in. Front kick by Belbita. Jumping body kick. Stiff jab and body shots from Kowalkiewicz in return. She wraps up the body lock and takes Belbita to the fence. They separate two minutes in. Kowalkiewicz re-enters with a thudding uppercut and goes to work, landing a nonstop stream of clean right hands. More clean uppercuts and Belbita’s eye is a wreck. Two minutes to go.

Jabs landing for Kowalkiewicz; Belbita’s trying to fire back but struggling to connect. There’s a 1-2 from Belbita. Kowalkiewicz tries a spinning back fist, then goes back to potshotting. 125 lbs.: Nate Maness vs. Mateus Mendonca

Round 1: Mendonca bullies him back with low kicks, then looks for a trip. Nice defense from Maness. Mendonca falls back for a heel hook a minute in, then looks for a calf slicer. No dice, so he scrambles up into a takedown attempt against the fence. Two minutes in. Maness still stubbornly keeping it on the feet. Mendonca again rolls for a leg and Maness responds with heavy punches. Maness continuing to land shots as Mendonca tries to get a heel hook. Two minutes to go.

Mendonca considers a toe hold, continues getting punched in the face. Big left hands appear to turn out Mendonca’s lights for a moment. One minute to go. Maness turns into top guard. Maness pouring it on with some huge punches and in comes the ref.

Final result: Maness def. Mendonca by TKO (punches)


115 lbs.: Vanessa Demopoulos vs. Kanako Murata

Round 1: Murata southpaw, Demopoulos orthodox. Low kick from Murata. Demopouls falls short with a right. Very tentative start. One minute in. Nice body kick from Murata. Demopoulos catches the next one and puts her on the fence, firing heavy knees downstairs. Murata changes levels, locks her hands, and trips Demopoulos to the mat two minutes in. On top in half guard. She elects to let Demopoulos up without much offense. Demopoulos follows her with a head kick and right hand. Two minutes to go.

Demopoulos body kick. Murata low kick soon after. Demopoulos pops her with a lead right. Murata comes back with a two-piece, but slips in the process. One minute to go. Demopoulos catches her with a 1-2 while Murata’s on one leg, sending her off-balance. She follows with a body kick, then jumps guard when Murata catches it. Looking for rubber guard, loses it, fires elbows inside. 10-9 Demopoulos.

Round 2: Demopoulos staying on the front foot. Right hand to the body, solid knee when Murata ties up, Murata answers with a trip into half guard. Demopoulos looking for deep half guard a minute in as Murata chips away. Back to full guard, left hand from Murata. She’s sporting a cut either on or right above her left eyelid. Two minutes in. Murata working from the top. Donkey Kong punch attempt. Two minutes to go.

Nice punch from Murata. Demopoulos fighting the wrists, but not finding much offense off her back. One minute to go. Murata tries another Donkey Kong smash. 10-9 Murata.

Round 3: Murata catches a kick and Demopoulos falls to her back, where Murata follows with a hard right hand. Demopoulos tries to elbow off her back a minute in. Both women hitting each other from guard. Demopoulos spins for an arm, nothing there. Hammerfist from Murata two minutes in. Chipping away from the top. Two minutes to go.

Demopoulos trying to play rubber guard, still nothing there. Murata stacks her, nic sweep from Demopoulos with a minute to go. Murata scrambles up into a body lock, lands a knee on the way up. Big slam before the bell. 10-9 Murata.

Final result: Demopoulos def. Murata by unanimous decision


135 lbs.: Johnny Munoz vs. Aoriqileng

Round 1: Aoriqileng walks into range and they spend the first minute awkwardly shuffling around while staring at each other. Hard right hand by Aoriqileng, Munoz waves it off. Ugly shot from Munoz denied. Aoriqileng low kick, but Munoz cracks him with an overhand right that sends him stumbling back. Munoz follows with a level change and finishes at the base of the fence. Aoriqileng gets to his feet, but Munoz trips him up and takes his back. Two minutes to go.

Full body triangle for Munoz. One minute to go. With about 20 seconds to go, Munoz spins for an armbar, but Aoriqileng gets free and drops a right hand in the final seconds. 10-9 Munoz.

Round 2: 1-2 from Aoriqileng to start. He tries to follow up with big shots against the fence, but Munoz closes his guard and clamps onto his head to keep him close. One minute in. Munoz trying to spin for an armbar. He works his legs into position, but can’t quite find it and Aoriqileng settles back in guard two minutes in. Aoriqileng stands over him and kicks at his legs, then comes back in with a right hand. Back to kicking at Munoz’s legs until the ref stands Munoz up with two minutes to go.

Aoriqileng low kick. Munoz tries an ugly swing. Munoz’s body language is not promising. Well-timed level change gets him the body lock. Solid defense from Aoriqileng. One minute to go. Aoriqileng reverses, lands a good elbow. Munoz tries to jump on a guillotine, doesn’t look like there’s anything there. Aoriqileng waits it out. 10-9 Aoriqileng.

Round 3: Aoriqileng on the front foot, throwing two-pieces. Munoz tries an overhand right and avoids a flying knee that draws a smile. 3-2 from Aoriqileng. Munoz catches a kick and shoots, Aoriqileng defends with double underhooks a minute in and separates. 1-2 from Munoz. Aoriqileng fires a combo, follows with a body shot. Left hand catches Munoz leaning and drops him to his seat. Munoz follows with another ugly shot and gets sprawled on two minutes in. He flails at Aoriqileng and falls back to guard, where Aoriqileng follows. Two minutes to go.

Right hand by Aoriqileng. Munoz spins for a leg, looking for a calf slicer. One minute to go. Aoriqileng swatting at Munoz, Munoz complaining about shots to the back of the head. Successful takedown from Munoz when Aoriqileng escapes. Aoriqileng gets back to his feet. 10-9 Aoriqileng.

125 lbs.: JJ Aldrich vs. Montana De La Rosa

Round 1: Aldrich slowly advancing as De La Rosa circles. They trade inside, De La Rosa with the better of it. Hard right hands from both a minute in. Aldrich 1-2 falls short. Same for De La Rosa soon after. Heavy counter right from De La Rosa to answer a leg kick. Two minutes in. Right hand from De La Rosa behind a head kick. Counter left by Aldrich. Aldrich grabs a body lock and takes her to the fence. Sneaky knee upstairs. Elbow on the exit with two minutes to go.

Aldrich straight left, then a harder one on the counter. De La Rosa whiffs a head kick and eats a thudding jab. Low kick lands for her. One minute to go. 1-2 from Aldrich after avoiding a head kick. Another good jab, De La Rosa blitzes in response. They trade in the center, head kick from Aldrich met with punches. Both land well in the final seconds. 10-9 Aldrich.

Round 2: They trade body kicks to start. De La Rosa doing a good job of following her kicks with straight rights. Lots of feinting on both sides. De La Rosa tries an awkward jumping front kick a minute in. They trade, nice hook by De La Rosa in combination. Glancing 1-2 from Aldrich. De La Rosa low kick, eats a right hand as they exchange and tries to fire back. Two minutes in. De La Rosa slips a 1-2. Jabs from Aldrich. Long stretch of inactivity from both women. Right hook from Aldrich, can’t find the clinch. Two minutes to go.

Lead right lands for De La Rosa, 1-2 lands for Aldrich moments later. Right hook by Aldrich, who walks into a cross and comes back with another right hook when they trade. One minute to go. Aldrich 1-2. De La Rosa low kick met by a counter. Solid rush from her in the center. Aldrich lands a body kick and they trade in the clinch. 10-9 Aldrich.

Round 3: De La Rosa active in the first minute, Aldrich keeping her distance. Nice straight right from De La Rosa a minute in, straight left comes right back at her. She shoots, denied, eats a right, roughs it up in the clinch. Elbow just misses on the break. Aldrich jab and right hook when De La Rosa tries to chase. Big 1-2 from Aldrich, her best shot in a while. De La Rosa’s nose is giving her trouble two minutes in. Aldrich jab, De La Rosa low kick. De La Rosa combo falls short, Aldrich straight left does not. De La Rosa’s busier but it’s Aldrich landing the meaningful shots. Two minutes to go.
