Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) returns to its APEX facility in Las Vegas, Nevada, for the UFC Vegas 81 mixed martial arts (MMA) event TONIGHT (Sat., Oct. 14, 2023), streaming LIVE on ESPN+. UFC Vegas 81 will be headlined by the 145-pound showdown between featherweight bruisers Sodiq Yusuff and Edson Barboza. Before that five-round clash of styles gets underway, women’s flyweight veterans Jennifer Maia and Viviane Araujo collide in the UFC Vegas 81 co-main event. Elsewhere on the card, bantamweight standouts Jonathan Martinez and Adrian Yanez hook ‘em up at 135 pounds.

Araujo ducks a right hand and shoots, denied. They trade on the exit. Jab exchange. Both land low kicks. Big left hook by Araujo after absorbing a right hand. Counter 3-2 from Maia with a minute to go. Maia shoots, can’t get it, lands well on the exit. She lands a glancing front kick and Araujo shoots. Maia defends until the bell. 10-9 Araujo.
Round 2: Quick 2-1 from Araujo, then a takedown into side control. Maia gets to her knees, then stands, Araujo still attached. Araujo slips in a hook a minute in. Hunting for the RNC. Two minutes in. She gets the other hook in. Body triangle now. Two minutes to go.
Maia fighting the hands but unable to escape the position. One minute to go. Araujo trying to cinch it up on the chin, can’t do so. 10-9 Araujo.
Round 3: Araujo shoots, denied. Low kicks from Maia. Nice 1-2. Another right hand, eats a low kick in return. Araujo lead right. She changes levels, denied. One minute in. Round 1: Yanez orthodox, Martinez southpaw. Quick head kick from Martinez blocked, low kick connects. Yanez tries a lead right. One minute in. Martinez lands a low kick and blocks a right hook. Hard calf kick appears to sting Yanez, who tries to come back with flurries. Body shot in combination, low kick from Martinez in return. They’re keeping their distance for the most part, not showing a ton of sustained action As I type that, a calf kick from Martinez completely compromises Yanez’s left leg. Yanez staggering but trying to throw power shots in return. He appears to get some feeling back in it with two minutes to go.
Martinez staying patient, avoids a flurry. Body shots from Yanez. Two-piece from Yanez, but Martinez immediately sits him down with another calf kick. One minute to go. Martinez lets him up, then kicks it again. Again. Yanez stubbornly staying orthodox. Martinez lands another calf kick and weathers a flurry. 10-9 Martinez.
Round 2: Yanez absorbs a low blow, then pushes forward with combination punches. He ties up and takes Martinez to the fence, but can’t keep him there long. More low kicks from Martinez a minute in. One drops Yanez hard and he looks injured, but he waves Martinez on. Martinez lets him up instead and goes back to viciously chopping it down. Sharp left from Martinez, then a counter 1-2. Yanez staggers back to the fence and eats two more nasty low kicks. A third two minutes in. Martinez stays patient and continues slamming home those inside low kicks until Yanez finally crumbles to his back, holding his knee.

185 lbs.: Michel Pereira vs. Andre Petroski
Round 1: Pereira staying at a distance and switching stance. Solid body kick. Things stay quiet for a bit, with Pereira feinting and Petroski slowly advancing, until Pereira uncorks a straight right that sends Petroski to the mat. Pereira jumps on him and hammers away for a quick finish.
Final result: Pereira def. Petroski by TKO (punches)
135 lbs.: Christian Rodriguez vs. Cameron Saaiman
Round 1: Rodriguez on the front foot, finding the mark with right hands. Solid counters. Saaiman comes back with a low kick. Slick knee and body shot from Rodriguez into the clinch, eats an uppercut on the way out. Brief clinch, neither lands clean. Rodriguez spins, Saaiman spins, and Rodriguez capitalizes for a takedown a minute in. He slowly cinches up an anaconda choke as Saaiman works to his feet, but “MSP” manages to get his head free and they soon separate. Trading punches in center cage two minutes in. Both whiff on 1-2s. More spins from Saaiman, who eats a knee for his trouble. Counter right by Rodriguez, eats a low kick in return. Lead elbow to knee by Rodriguez, who catches a kick but can’t use it. Saaiman knocks him back with a looping left, then lands a straight with two minutes to go.
Two-touch switch kick from Saaiman. Rodriguez steps in with a knee and changes levels, moving to the rear waist lock. Saaiman counters with a single-leg attempt before separating. Clean 1-2 from Rodriguez, who got cut at some point. Solid body kick, then another 1-2 after avoiding a volley form Saaiman. One minute to go. They trade in the center, left hook and knee from Saaiman. Lead elbow to overhand left to spinning back kick, nothing lands. Saaiman shoots in the final seconds, can’t complete it. 10-9 Rodriguez.
Round 2: Low kick from Saaiman, then an awkward hook. Rodriguez staying composed and orthodox. Nice punching exchange. Hard knee catches Saaiman leaning and Rodriguez denies the following takedown with a whizzer. Another hard knee a minute in, then a two-piece behind it. Saaiman shoots again and Rodriguez sells out on an anaconda. It’s super deep, but Saaiman somehow rolls through into top guard. He jumps on Rodriguez’s back and secures both hooks two minutes in. Rodriguez sweeps and takes Saaiman’s back in seconds. Body triangle. Saaiman sweeps into guard, avoiding a triangle with two minutes to go.
Rodriguez avoids another back take as he stands, then slings Saaiman to the mat with a slick foot sweep and takes the back himself. Punches landing for Rodriguez. Solid lefts with a minute to go. Saaiman stands, then granby rolls for a leg. Rodriguez doesn’t seem to be in danger and is taking the opportunity to land more good punches. Saaiman gets to his knees and stands, eating an elbow as he does. One more exchange at the bell. 10-9 Rodriguez.
Round 3: Rodriguez continues to push forward and pick his shots. Lead hook connects, Saaiman tries some fancy lead-leg stuff in return. Body shot to jump knee from Rodriguez, who fights off another takedown with a whizzer. Elbow on the exit a minute in. Jab knocks Saaiman off-balance. Saaiman lands a left and avoids a spinning attack. Rodriguez lands a body kick, catches the one that comes back. Saaiman pushing forward with combinations. Spinning back fist whiffs, left hand does not. Two minutes in. Trading punches in the center. Knee to elbow by Rodriguez. Saaiman trying to pour on the volume but Rodriguez continues to be the sharper striker by a large margin, blocking and coming back with counters. Body shot from Saaiman, Rodriguez counter elbow. 145 lbs.: Darren Elkins vs. TJ Brown
Round 1: Solid low kick from Brown followed by some jabs. Another hard one to the calf. Elkins looking awkward as ever in there, but he hits a nice takedown into guard 50 seconds in. Short punches from Elkins. Brown tries to get something going off his back but gives up half guard. Back to full as Elkins chips away. Two minutes in. Half again for Elkins. Brown tries a deep half guard sweep but gets forced back down via front headlock. Elkins consistently threatening that front headlock any time Brown tries to attack. Now Brown slips free and takes him down with two minutes to go.
Brown stands, then comes back down. Elkins turns it into a takedown attempt, then capitalizes on a lapse from Brown to latch onto his back. He looks to have an RNC, but Brown breaks his grip with a minute to go. Body triangle for Elkins, still hunting the choke. He lands arm punches until the bell. 10-9 Elkins.
Round 2: Hard 1-2 from Elkins to start. Brown pushing forward, lands a nice jab and denies a shot. Counter knee. Elkins shoots again, denied again. Nice calf kick by Brown. Simultaneous right hands. One minute in. Elkins avoids an uppercut and shoots, initiating a wild scramble that sees Brown nearly hit the switch and take the back before Elkins powers through to take side control. Brown works his way up and locks his hands for a double-leg of his own. Half guard after avoiding upkicks. He tries to jump on Elkins’ back as the latter stands and again Elkins is ready, taking top half guard. Elkins uses a hook to get some space and Elkins wraps up a guillotine on the way up, but Brown scrambles free and they separate. Another double-leg by Elkins with two minutes to go.
Elkins on top in guard, landing short punches. Heavy shoulder pressure by Elkins. One minute to go. Brown explodes to his feet and avoids a back take to land on top. He looks for the back himself and Elkins capitalizes to sweep into top half guard. Brown hits his own sweep and tries to jump guillotine at the bell. 10-9 Elkins.
Round 3: Both men landing good punches in the opening seconds. Stiff jab from Brown, low single by Elkins in return. Brown avoids a back take and jumps on a guillotine, which Elkins rolls through to land on top. Elkins looking for the back, settles for half guard a minute in. Brown explodes up but Elkins stubbornly remains attached before again taking half guard. Now he takes the back and wraps up the body triangle two minutes in. In comes the RNC and there’s the tap.

135 lbs.: Tainara Lisboa vs. Ravena Oliveira
Round 1: Hard counter right by Lisboa to answer a leg kick. Again, same sequence. Lisboa stalking as Oliveira circles. One minute in. Lisboa blitzes into the clinch, landing some solid knees before Oliveira puts her on the fence. Lisboa tries a whizzer kick, gives up the body lock. Two minutes in. Oliveira continuing to press her against the fence and throw short knees. Finally she trips Lisboa into half guard. Lisboa gets butterfly guard with two minutes to go.
Lisboa works her way back to her feet with the whizzer, then puts Oliveira on the fence with over-unders. Oliveira reverses, but gives up the body lock and Lisboa trips her to the mat with a minute to go. Left hands from Lisboa as she works to pass. Both hooks in. She continues to land punches until the bell. 10-9 Lisboa.
Round 2: Quick double-leg puts Lisboa on top in half guard. Looking to set up an arm triangle, can’t get it but moves to mount a minute in. Back control, landing punches. Oliveira regains half guard. Two minutes in. Short punches from Lisboa. Back to full guard. Two minutes to go.
Lisboa cruising in top position. Now she stands over her for a moment, then comes back down without landing much. Oliveira turns for a heel hook with a minute to go, can’t get it. Lisboa holding onto the body lock as they return to their feet. 10-9 Lisboa.
Round 3: Oliveira comes out slugging. Solid combination against the fence after missing a Superman punch, but she falls into the clinch. Jockeying for position against the fence. Hard knees from Lisboa a minute in and she changes levels, but Oliveira uses an underhook nicely to peel her off and separate. Running knee to left hand by Oliveira. Superman punch to a nasty left hook that prompts Lisboa to tie up. Oliveira rolls through Lisboa’s whizzer kick to land on top in half guard. Oliveira moves to side control, not landing much ground-and-pound. Two minutes to go.
Oliveira looking for the back, gets one hook in when Lisboa turns. Back to half guard. One minute to go. Oliveira returns to the feet, where Lisboa immediately shoots in and takes her down into guard. Oliveira kicks her off, tries a Superman punch, and slugs it out until the bell. 10-9 Oliveira.

155 lbs.: Terrance McKinney vs. Brendon Marotte
Round 1: Marotte opens with a low kick and McKinney fires a right hand, cups the head, and slams a knee into his face for a knockdown inside of 10 seconds. McKinney swarms on him with punches, and though Marotte manages to tie up for a moment, the onslaught soon sends the ref into action.
Final result: McKinney def. Marotte by TKO (knee and punches)
135 lbs.: Irina Alekseeva vs. Melissa Dixon
Round 1: Stiff jab from Dixon to start. Alekseeva comes back with a series of low kicks and a counter left hook. Lots of volume from Alekseeva, who eats another good jab. Another. Dixon catches a kick and stings her with a counter hook. One minute in. Another jab snaps Alekseeva’s head back. Dixon right hand, Alekseeva uppercut and knee in the clinch. Alekseeva still the busier so far, especially with the low kicks. Hard right and jab by Dixon. Two minutes in. Straight right from Alekseeva, who eats two more thumping jabs. A third, then a 1-2. Flurry from Alekseeva met by a 1-2. Out of nowhere, Alekseeva uncorks a monster right straight that puts Dixon on her seat. Dixon manages to close up her guard and work her way back to her feet with two minutes to go.
Jockeying for position in the clinch. Alekseeva looking for a single-leg, Dixon trying to counter with a back take. Awkward position with a minute to go. Dixon slips the other hook in but her angle isn’t great. She still manages to do some good work with punches and elbows. 10-9 Alekseeva.
Round 2: Alekseeva tries a head kick. Dixon backs her up with a combo, Alekseeva comes back with a flurry. Counter right and jab by Dixon. One minute in. Brutal counter right from Dixon and she follows into the clinch, fighting off a throw attempt to take mount. Hard elbow. Alekseeva gives up her back as Dixon chips away with punches two minutes in. Dixon in full back mount against the fence, chipping away with right hands. Two minutes to go.
Body triangle for Dixon. Alekseeva trying to turn into guard, impressive recovery by Dixon to maintain position. One minute to go. Alekseeva still fighting the hands. Dixon moves to mount and lands some hard elbows, then retakes the back with some punches. Elbow at the bell. 10-8 Dixon.
Round 3: Alekseeva wading forward, whiffing punches. Jabs from Dixon. They trade right hands against the fence. Dixon shoots, denied. Nice jabs, then a hard right hand. They slug it out in the center for a moment. Dixon landing some clean, heavy shots as a tired Alekseeva wades forward. One minute in. Counter jab by Alekseeva. Dixon to the body. Alatengheili struggling to cut off the cage, eats another low kick. Gutierrez tries a couple of head kicks, avoids a rush. More low kicks with two minutes to go.
Gutierrez continuing to chew up Alatengheili’s legs as the later stalks him across the cage. Spinning back fist whiffs. Gutierrez double jab. Spinning back kick glances off. Two-piece lands for Alatengheili against the fence with a minute to go. Gutierrez cracks him with a counter hook when he tries to press the attack. Lead right by Alatengheili, eats a jab in return. Round 2: More low kicks piling up for Gutierrez. Alatengheili just can’t track him down, falling short with all his power shots. One minute in. There’s a right cross from Alatengheili, then a body shot soon after. Spinning back fist just misses for Gutierrez, who smoothly avoids a rush. Alatengheili left hook two minutes in. Gutierrez low kick catches the cup. Alatengheili doesn’t take long to recover. He comes out much more aggressively, looking for power kicks. Round 3: Gutierrez gets right back to hammering home low kicks. Alatengheili trying to come back with combos but falling short with everything. Body kick from Gutierrez, then a left hand downstairs. Counter low kick, Alatengheili claims it was low but Gutierrez disagrees and the ref doesn’t intervene. One minute in. Solid flurry from Alatengheili as he backs Gutierrez to the fence. Counter overhand. Jabs from Gutierrez in return. Two minutes in. Jabs and low kicks piling up for Gutierrez. That lump on Alatengheili’s calf is massive.
