“Girlrilla” will look to start a winning streak.
Liz Carmouche takes on Raquel Pennington at UFC 191 on Sept. 5 in Las Vegas, it was announced Wednesday on UFC Tonight.
Carmouche (10-5) holds the distinction of being one of the two first women to compete in a female MMA match in the UFC, along with Ronda Rousey. The former Marine is coming off a unanimous decision win over Lauren Murphy in April. Carmouche, 31, lost two in a row before that, but remains ranked No. 10 among UFC’s women’s bantamweight contenders. She has only been defeated by elite 135ers like Rousey, Miesha Tate and Alexis Davis in the UFC.
Pennington (5-5) had a very good showing in a split decision loss to Holly Holm at UFC 184 back in February. Before that, she defeated Ashlee Evans Smith via first-round submission at UFC 181 last December. Pennington, an Ultimate Fighter 18 alum, has lost four of six overall.
UFC 191 will be headlined by a flyweight title fight between champion Demetrious Johnson and John Dodson. In the co-main event, Andrei Arlovski meets Frank Mir. Paige VanZant also takes on Alex Chambers on the card, which will take place at MGM Grand Garden Arena.
