Two ranked welterweights hope to improve their case for a UFC welterweight title shot when Vicente Luque and Michael Chiesa meet at UFC 265.
Ranked welterweights Vicente Luque and Michael Chiesa are set to fight at UFC 265.
Luque (no. 5) and Chiesa (no. 6) continue to carve their paths to a UFC welterweight title shot; however, one of those routes will hit a dead-end on August 7. A source with knowledge of the booking confirmed it to MMAmania.com following an initial report by Cageside Press.
Luque (20-7-1) is riding a three-fight winning streak with consecutive finishes of former UFC champion Tyron Woodley, Randy Brown and Niko Price. Unanimous decisions losses to Stephen Thompson and Leon Edwards are his only defeats since bouncing back from a loss in his promotional debut in 2015. His hit list includes Mike Perry, Bryan Barberena, Belal Muhammad and Hayder Hassan.
A revitalized Chiesa (18-4) is undefeated since moving to welterweight in December 2018. He enters the Luque fight on a four-fight winning streak, the best of his UFC career, with wins over Neil Magny, Rafael dos Anjos, Diego Sanchez and Carlos Condit. Other notable names on his record include Beneil Dariush, Jim Miller, Fransisco Trinaldo and Al Iaquinta.
UFC 265 takes place on Saturday, August 7 from a location to be determined. The pay-per-view (PPV) event is headlined by a UFC women’s bantamweight match-up pitting champion Amanda Nunes vs. Julianna Pena. Also on the card is Jose Aldo vs. Pedro Munhoz, and Tecia Torres vs. Angela Hill.
