“This is not a very forgiving sport when it comes to wins or losses so this is huge for Colby.”

Robbie Lawler is a very risky matchup for Colby Covington as, should ‘Chaos’ lose tomorrow night at UFC on ESPN 5, the former interim welterweight champ will have a long, long road back to title contention.

In fact, speaking to BJPenn.com in a recent interview, Covington’s longtime manager, Dan Lambert, said the 31-year-old’s headlining bout against Lawler is one of the most important fights of his career.

“Once you get to where Colby is, every fight is uber-important to win, but this one is super important for his career,” Lambert said. “If he wins, he is right there for a title shot. If he loses, he is down a few notches. This is not a very forgiving sport when it comes to wins or losses so this is huge for Colby.”

Covington, who is the betting favorite over Lawler, is expected to challenge Kamaru Usman for the official welterweight title but Lambert knows nothing is official until both fighters sign on the dotted line.

“Colby wanted a title shot. I don’t think he cared if it is [Kamaru] Usman, [Tyron Woodley], it didn’t matter. He wanted a title shot before anything,” Lambert. “They said if he wins this he is getting a title shot but they have said that before.”

UFC on ESPN 5, which features Covington vs. Lawler as the main event, takes place tomorrow night, August 3 at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.
