It’s always welcome news to hear that mixed martial arts (MMA) fighters are planning for their future, because the window in which they can make the bulk of their earnings is very, very small and unlikely to carry them through the second half of their lives.
Which may explain all those money-fight wannabes.
For Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) welterweight champion, Kamaru Usman, life after cage fighting will be best served as a counselor, where he can continue to give advice to those folks in need of guidance.
“I want to be a marriage counselor,” Usman told Joe Rogan (via MMA Junkie). “I think I’ve always been very good at being able to step back from situations of what’s going on and give advice. I do this with my friends. Just a counselor of some sort. When I leave this world, I want to leave it in a better situation than what it came in.”
Usman (16-1) is also trying to leave the welterweight division in a better situation than when he came in, turning away 170-pound loudmouth, Colby Covington, in the UFC 245 main event last December in Las Vegas, Nevada.
His next assignment could be his most dangerous, as promotion president, Dana White, has already told the combat sports media that “Nigerian Nightmare” is expected to throw down against Jorge Masvidal this summer in “Sin City.”
A fight that may get started a few months early.
