After seeing Ronda Rousey’s rise to fame, Vanes Martirosyan feels that he is ready for his upcoming title fight against Gennady Golovkin.
Two-time boxing title contender Vanes Martirosyan got to have a behind-the-scenes experience of Ronda Rousey’s rise to MMA superstardom. But even before “Rowdy” had her dominant run in the UFC, Martirosyan already knew that it was bound to happen.
”She got 50 stitches in her leg and then she won the next day by armbar … that’s when we knew,” Martirosyan said (via the Los Angeles Times). “She’s like a sister to me.”
“The Nightmare” is currently preparing himself for the biggest fight of his career as he is now tasked to replace Canelo Alvarez and fight the hard-hitting and undefeated Gennady Golovkin for the WBA, IBO, and WBC middleweight titles. And apart from using Rousey as inspiration, he is also looking forward to pull off a huge upset, being the heavy underdog.
“(Being a massive underdog is) motivation, fire,” Martirosyan said. “People say mean things, but I look my kids in the eye and say, ‘I’m going to shock the world, I’m going to win for you,’ and that’s all the motivation I need.”
Martirosyan’s trainer Edmond Tarverdyan is not at all doubting that his fighter can get the job done.
”I know Vanes like my five fingers, and if Vanes is happy and excited, he’s the most dangerous man. He has that now,” Tarverdyan said. “His personality is perfect for this. To have this great, big fight, to have all this attention on him … he loves that pressure.”
Golovkin vs. Martirosyan will take place on May 5th at the StubHub Center in California.
