Both men’s scheduled opponents suffered injuries so the pair will instead fight for the title on short notice.

A third title fight has been added to Cage Warriors’ return to London.

Due to both of their previously booked opponents withdrawing at late notice, top lightweights Mason Jones and Joe McColgan have now been matched against each other to battle it out for the promotion’s vacant lightweight belt. The promotion’s president, Graham Boylan, revealed the news via Twitter on Friday afternoon.

Many notable European names have held the lightweight title including Conor McGregor, Chris Fishgold, Stevie Ray and recent UFC signee, Jai Herbert. Cage Warriors 113 is scheduled to take place on Friday, March 20 from the Indigo at the O2 in London and will be broadcast live on UFC Fight Pass. The event will be closed to the public due to the coronavirus.

Jones (8-0) has been absolutely perfect in his professional MMA career so far and is one of the fastest rising stars coming out of Wales. All but one of his fights have taken place in Cage Warriors and he has finished 5 of his 8 wins by stoppage. He is coming off the back of two impressive, three-round displays against standout European lightweights Donovan Desmae and Aleksi Mantykivi.

McColgan (6-2-1) is considered by many as part of the next wave of talented fighters coming out of Ireland. ‘The SBG Hunter’ has a decision victory over Peter Queally on his record which has also seen him submit four opponents out of his six professional victories. Since losing to the previous lightweight champion, Jai Herbet, McColgan has picked up two first round victories as well as a majority draw against Mehdi Ben Lakhdar, in a European fight of the year candidate.
