Most people were impressed with Edwards’ domination of dos Anjos, but not ‘Gamebred.’
Leon Edwards put on another masterful performance at UFC San Antonio on Saturday night, taking a dominant decision win over the extremely tough Rafael dos Anjos with 50-45, 49-46, and 49-46 scorecards (watch the highlights here). It was an impressive feat, but one person that wasn’t particularly thrilled with Edwards’ 8th welterweight win in a row was Jorge Masvidal.
Edwards and Masvidal have serious history going back to when “Gamebred” gave Edwards a ‘two piece and soda’ backstage at a UFC London event, clocking the Birmingham fighter when he dared approach him after his main event win over Darren Till. Since then it’s seemed the two were destined to scrap but Masvidal hasn’t shown too much interest since laying his fists on “Rocky” Edwards.
Now he’s continuing that trend of dismissal on social media, calling the win over dos Anjos boring and sticking to his title shot demands.
Big difference between putting top ranked opponents to sleep and putting fans to sleep #bum #whoru

So I can be clear I was promised a title shot after I beat askren and I plan on cashing in on it. Don’t call me out no more until I get that belt #supernecessary

It will be interesting to see which way the UFC swings on this one. Masvidal has never been more popular and has just won two high profile fights against top welterweight talent. But those are the only two wins he has before two red marks – losses to Stephen Thompson and Demian Maia. Meanwhile, Leon Edwards has one of the longest streaks going in the UFC, even if it comes without the kind of highlight reel knockouts the UFC (and fans) seem to love.
Maybe they should fight to sort out who gets next? What a crazy thought. What do you think, Maniacs?
