UFC Austin blew the roof off Moody Center last night (Sat., Dec. 2, 2023) in Austin, Texas, on a night full of devastating finishes which led to a total of 10 post-fight bonus checks awarded. Arman Tsarukyan topped it all off by knocking out Beneil Dariush in the first minute of the headlining bout (highlights). In the co-main event, Jalin Turner had his own highlight reel knockout after obliterating Bobby Green, who took a ton of unnecessary punishment thanks to a super-late stoppage (see it here).
Winner: Arman Tsarukyan
Who He Should Face Next: Justin Gaethje
Despite his impressive finish, Tsarukyan did not surpass Charles Oliveira in the title fight race, though a rematch between the current champion and Tsarukyan would be intriguing down the road. For now, Tsarukyan — who is on a three-fight win streak and should crack the Top 5 — should focus on a potential scrap against Justin Gaethje, the No. 2 ranked fighter at 155 pounds. Gaethje is currently on a two-fight win streak and was last seen sending Dustin Poirier in the the stratosphere, knocking him out cold to win the “BMF” title. Since Oliveira is in line to face Makhachev sometime in 2024, the only logical step to take is book Tsarukyan vs. Gaethje to to see who has next.
Winner: Jalin Turner
Who He Should Face Next: Rafael Fiziev
Turner made the most of his opportunity after stepping in for an injured Dan hooker to face Bobby Green, knocking him out in the very first round. In doing so, “Tarantula” snapped his two-fight losing streak. On that note, a fight Fiziev — who has lost two straight — is a nice fight to make. Fiziev is coming off a loss to Mateusz Gamrot and is currently ranked No. 7 in the division. As for Turner, he might move up a spot or two following his big win, who had previously dropped back-to-back split decisions.
Winner: Deiveson Figueiredo
Who He Should Face Next: Petr Yan
After making an impress Bantamweight debut with a win over Rob Font, Figueiredo was already looking ahead to a title fight against Sean O’Malley. But that simply isn’t in the card, despite the fact that “Daico” was the former Flyweight champion. For now, the Brazilian bomber can potentially look ahead to a fight against Yan, which might be a bit more appropriate. The former 135-pound champion has seen better days, losing his last three fights against the cream of the crop in the division. Yan is currently ranked No. 5, three spots ahead of Font.
Winner: Sean Brady
Who He Should Face Next: Gilbert Burns
After over a year away from action, Brady returned with a vengeance and dominated Kelvin Gastelum before submitting him in the third and final round. It was a great way to get his feet wet again, and he is now 6-1 inside the Octagon, which should earn him a bump up the rankings. A fight against Burns just screams excitement. Burns is coming off a loss to Belal Muhammad, the same man who handed Brady his first-ever defeat.
Winner: Joaquim Silva
Who He Should Face Next: Rafa Garcia
Silva picked up a huge win by outscoring Clay Guida, putting him back in the win column after getting knocked out by the aforementioned Arman Tsarukyan earlier this year. He still has a lot of ground to cover since he is just 2-3 in his last five fights, so pairing him up against someone like Garcia makes sense. Garcia was also last seen defeating Guida, and is 4-1 in his last five fights. Both men are just trying to scratch and crawl their way up the crowded 155-pound division.
Winner: Dustin Stoltzfus
Who He Should Face Next: Christian Leroy Duncan
Stoltzfus picked up a much-needed win by submitting Punahele Soriano. Coming into the event, Stoltzfus had lost three of his last four fights inside the Octagon so he was definitely on the chopping block. As for Duncan, he is 2-1 so far in his young UFC career, and is coming off a win over Denis Tiuliulin earlier this month and boasts an overall MMA record of 9-1.
