After a ridiculous disqualification in the first matchup, the Floyd Mayweather Jr. Exhibition Tour makes its first return appearance tonight (Sat., Aug. 24, 2024) from Mexico City.

The rematch (and paycheck) that everyone named Mayweather and Gotti was hoping for is finally here and it’s time to watch one of the best boxers of our generation toy with some food for awhile. Oh, and there’s some legitimate up-and-coming talent on this undercard (see it here) that’s worth your time even if you don’t care for the circus-like atmosphere that is a Mayweather fight in 2024.

TONIGHT (Sat., Aug. 24, 2024) live from Arena CDMX in Mexico City, Mexico, we’ve got Floyd Mayweather Jr. rematching John Gotti III as they hope to settle their beef from more than one year ago.

It all happens tonight, starting at 9 p.m. ET on DAZN.

All respect for Floyd participating in an event that provides a platform with eyes for some lesser known fighters to get some shine on their name. The undercard includes a WBC Silver Super Bantamweight title fight between belt-holder and undefeated Alan David Picasso (28-0-1, 16 KOs) and Azat Hovhannisyan (21-4, 17 KOs). Picasso is ranked #2 in the WBC world behind pound-for-pound superstar Naoya “Monster” Inoue, while “Crazy A” is sitting at #5 in said rankings.

Very few people outside of hardcore boxing fans know who these top 5 guys are and these fellas get a spotlight to give themselves bigger future earnings. Another bright prospect to watch is Curmel Moton. If you happened to tune in to the undercard of last month’s Nate Diaz/Jorge Masvidal tilt, you would’ve seen this young man absolutely obliterate a seasoned journeyman in just two rounds. He’s a name to remember, and getting to watch a talent like this in just his 5th pro fight is something worthwhile.

Eagle-eyed Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) watchers will also note the participation of UFC vet TJ Brown on the undercard tonight. Brown has had himself a tremendous 2024 in combat sports so far, racking up wins in MMA, bare-knuckle MMA, kickboxing and boxing. He looks to notch his 5th combat sports win this calendar year when he takes on Antonio Guadarrama.

But, most of you are here to watch boxing legend Floyd Mayweather Jr. most likely toy with mobster scion John Gotti III. Last time, referee Tony Weeks inserted himself into the fight and we ended up in a huge, ring-filling brawl. Now, we’re looking for some finality after that weird night last summer.

MAYWEATHER VS. GOTTI III LIVE PLAY-BY-PLAY:

Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. John Gotti III

Round 1: Gotti in silver, Mayweather in red, white and green. Floyd to the body, and a right. Gotti to the body, gets countered. Mayweather with a 1-2 at the end of the round. Funny moment as the timekeeper forgot these were two minute rounds and Gotti backed off and yelled at him.

Round 2: Gotti looking scared a bit here, not taking the bait. Ref warns Floyd about hitting behind the head, but that hit the ear. Mayweather telling the ref to get out of the way. He won’t for some reason. What is going on here? He tells Gotti’s corner to get in the ring and get his guy. I don’t understand this at all. We’ve swapped referees. Lol, Floyd told him to get out of here, and he did. Mayweather pops a jab. He’s swinging a bit now, as he’s kinda mad. Gotti with a right.

Round 3: Gotti gets hit and shells up on the ropes. Floyd comboing away on him with no offense coming back to deter him. He looks to the ref because he thought one or more of those blows wasn’t legal, but the ref does nothing (they looked fine to me). Finally Gotti gets off the ropes and Mayweather backs away. Gotti lunges in and whiffs.

Round 4: There’s a jab by Gotti. Mayweather to the gut, Gotti mirrors back a couple seconds later. Floyd pitty-pats about 5 or 6 punches in a row.

Round 5: Gotti marching forward, but not having any success. When Floyd punches, Gotti tends to duck down, and then complains when the shots go on/near the back of the head. Gotti hits a left. Left and a right by Mayweather.

Round 6: Floyd being aggressive a bit now, walking forward with his hands high. Both men slugging to the body. Floyd with a pair of jabs, Gotti with one of his own.

Round 7: Floyd looking to hit a little now. Gotti goes to the body, might’ve been low, but the ref didn’t see it. Mayweather to the liver, then the head. Repeats it. Gotti gets in a combo, but ducks down and Floyd is happy to chop down.

Round 8: Gotti looking kinda scared here. Backs Floyd up, and does hit behind the head this time, which draws the ref’s admonishment. Floyd actually agrees with this one, as he’s smiling. Gotti finally swinging a little bit. Realizes maybe he has nothing to lose? Nah, that’s it.

Final result: No decision, exhibition bout

Alan David Picasso vs. Azat Hovhannisyan for the WBC Silver Super Bantamweight Title

Round 1: Picasso in white, Azat (if you think I’m typing out Hovhannisyan every time he does something, you’re bonkers) in black. Picasso with a right-left-right. All partially blocked, but that means that they all got through some. Azat to the body. Picasso replies in kind. Azat hits back again to the gut. Both men are leaving their heads on the center line.

10-9 Picasso

Round 2: Neither man getting the range cleanly to start this round. There’s an uppercut by Picasso that sends Azat taking a few steps back into the ropes. Picasso flurrying while Azat tries to recover. He eventually does and comes off the rope firing. Defense for both men seems to be mostly just a high guard, so they’re both going to the body and throwing uppercuts to split said cover-up. Azat throwing about five in a row to the body and what appeared to be the hips.

10-9 Picasso

Round 3: Azat with a nice hit to the ribs, and that sends Picasso back a bit. Picasso now taking a bit to show off what head movement looks like. He is bending from the waist in all directions while he hangs out in the corner. Azat gets a bit of a talking to for holding the head with one hand while hockey-punching with the other. Picasso with a counter. Azat hits below the belt, which gets a warning. They throw at the buzzer – right-left for Picasso, and a right for Azat.

10-9 Azat

Round 4: They’re both trying to be the aggressor. Uppercut gets through again for Picasso. Another warning for Azat for a low blow. Right from Azat. One by Picasso. Good liver shot by Picasso answered by a left counter.

10-9 Azat

Round 5: Azat with a combo. Picasso replies with a 7-piece combo. Bad low blow by Azat and this time Picasso is hurt by it. Will we get a point deduction? Yes, we will. They go back to doing the “I lead, you respond” dynamic. Azat gets in a 3-2. Now it’s Picasso’s turn for a combo. Azat with a counter at the buzzer.

10-8 Picasso

Round 6: Picasso cracks home a right. They trade jabs. Picasso to the body with his left. Nice inside combo by Azat punctuated by a shovel hook. Lead hands landed by both men. Picasso to the body. Better one to the body by Azat.

10-9 Azat

Round 7: They’re both landing on each other with near impunity. Azat really ripping to the body here. Picasso showing both a ramrod jab and a skillful uppercut. When they show the wide camera view, you can see Julio Cesar Chavez doing TV commentary and going nuts whenever Picasso does something nice. Chuck Liddell’esque is Julio, here, Joe. Man, they’re really having a blistering pace here still through 7.

10-9 Picasso

Round 8: Picasso is landing a lot more than he’s taking now. 3:1 traffic here by my estimation. Maybe Azat is hoping to catch Picasso here, as he’s swinging back now. Picasso backs off and they’re in the center again. I think Picasso has felt what Azat has to offer, and he’s a bit more content to go into a firefight. Same dynamic plays out for the rest of the round, as Picasso throws and lands more.

10-9 Picasso

Round 9: Azat with a nice bit of dirty boxing there. Picasso 1-2, Azat with a straight right. Picasso with a bit of blood out of his nose now. Azat lands a left as Picasso gets in a right. Picasso’s left hits. Combo by Picasso, then three lefts by Azat.

10-9 Azat

Round 10: The open scorecards are read out in Spanish while the boxers are going. Picasso up on all three cards. Azat has his foot on the gas this round, as he knows he’s down. Picasso seems to have heard he’s up by a couple rounds and isn’t really doing much right now. Clubbing right from Azat goes behind the ear. Picasso pops in a right.

10-9 Azat

Round 11: Straight right sends Azat’s head back and sweat flying. Azat bulldozes is way inside, trying to do his level best to break Picasso, but it doesn’t look like he has what it takes. Azat to the liver, twice. Picasso’s output has slowed a bit, but he’s still throwing in spurts. Two to the body and a left hook. He’s got a pair of mice underneath each eye. Azat counter right.

10-9 Picasso

Round 12: Looks like Picasso was saving some gas here, as he probably realized that Azat was going to be going hellbent here this final round. Azat firing a series of rights. One to the back of the head gets a warning. Azat just going forward constantly, eats a right, lands a 2. Picasso is defending well, as he knows he’s got this fight if he gets to the bell. Azat trying his damndest, but unable to breach the defenses or the clinches when he gets too close.

10-9 Azat

Final result: Alan David Picasso defeats Azat Hovhannisyan

Victor Ortiz vs. Rodrigo Coria

Round 1: Well, this is annoying – they’re bother wearing white and blue shorts with neon green gloves. Coria’s trunks are the gladiator-style with vertical slits all up them and he’s wearing black spandex underneath them. Ortiz’s are the more traditional. They’re sparring this round it looks like. Decent counter by Ortiz. Couple lefts lands for Coria.

Round 2: Ortiz lands a nice body-head. Slight upping of the temperature by Ortiz here. They’re still going what looks like 75%, but they are throwing a fair amount, so this is good entertainment at least.

Round 3: Coria popping Ortiz now. These are two minute rounds, so they’re going by quickly. Most of what Ortiz has been throwing has hit glove.

Round 4: They enter the pocket and stay there, just heavy-slapping each other as they work each other for some fun and laughs. Good defensive head movement by Ortiz now.

Round 5: Yea, hard to really do much of a play-by-play of two fellas getting a workout in with each other. Both men landing a fair amount, but neither trying to hurt each other. Good action in terms of volume and skill-honing, but not a real match.

Round 6: Punchity-punch-punch. Ortiz mostly on the front foot this round as they both work the body and the head. Professional practice fight going on here. Ortiz with a combo and Coria responds with a counter.

Round 7: Coria with a left, a right a few seconds later. Ortiz gets in a counter. They’re upping the percentage a little here. Sweet little footwork display by Coria as he dances right, punches, then dances back left while continuing to punch.

Round 8: I think the percentage went back down a bit this round, to be honest. Lots of volume and what I would call “working on stuff”. Clash of heads, which fortunately doesn’t leave a cut. They clinch and separate to swing a little at the end.

Final result: No decision, exhibition bout

Curmel Moton vs. Victor Vasquez

Round 1: Moton in green, Vasquez in black & gold. Moton comes out on the front foot early. Lands a right. Left and a right-left-right combo floors Vasquez. He stands near the end of the count, but the ref says nope. And that’s it. Knew this was going to be a squash match, but he didn’t get touched at all.

Final result: Curmel Moton knocks out Victor Vasquez
