The famed former world champion boxer has drawn a cashier’s check for $88,500 to pay the expenses for George Floyd’s funeral.
Floyd Mayweather’s legacy outside the ring hasn’t always been a positive one. However, the shocking murder of George Floyd by Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin has led to some remarkable generosity from the boxing legend.
Originally reported by TMZ, Time Magazine confirmed that Mayweather would be paying for Floyd’s funeral services. CEO of Mayweather promotions Leonard Ellerbe spoke to ESPN about Mayweather’s intention, telling the outlet, “He’ll probably get mad at me for saying that, but yes, he is definitely paying for the funeral,” adding that, “Floyd has done these kind of things over the last 20 years.”
George Floyd was killed on Monday, May 25th, after officers responded to accusations that Floyd had passed a counterfeit $20 bill at a Minneapolis deli. Video and images of his death, pinned as he slowly suffocated under an officer’s knee, have caused a wave of anger and protests.
USA Today reports that funeral services for Floyd will take place across several days, starting with a memorial service at North Central University in Minneapolis, MN on Thursday, June 4th. Reverend Al Sharpton will deliver a eulogy, accompanied by a statement from the the Floyd family attorney.
There will also be a memorial service in Raeford, North Carolina – George Floyd’s birthplace – on Saturday, June 6th. That service will take place at the Cape Fear Conference B Headquarters and be followed by a private family service.
There will be a public viewing from noon-6pm on Monday, at the Fountain of Praise in Houston, TX—where Floyd grew up. Those events will be followed by the funeral service and burial on Tuesday, June 9th.
All of which will be supported by an $88,500 donation from Mayweather. Photos of a cashiers check, signed by Mayweather for the funeral services have made their way to social media. In speaking to ESPN, Ellerbe confirmed that the Floyd family had accepted Mayweather’s offer to pay for the services, adding that the boxer did not wish to publicly discuss the gesture.
