Former opponent Floyd Mayweather had some pretty derogatory things to say about Conor McGregor following the Irishman’s loss to Dustin Poirier at UFC 257.
The world of combat sports is already a tough place to exist inside, and it certainly doesn’t help that one loss can lead to everyone dogpiling the hate on even the most accomplished of athletes.
You can see that in action following Conor McGregor’s loss at UFC 257 to Dustin Poirier. Endless memes of “The Notorious” laying dazed on the canvas are circulating, giving even the Bernie Inauguration meme a run for its money. Sports commentators are debating whether it’s time to write McGregor off (or whether that time was actually three years ago). Even some of Conor’s former opponents are coming out and talking trash.
For example, take a look at this post from Floyd Mayweather, who seems upset that McGregor is ‘loved’ while Mayweather gets ‘hated’ (a somewhat flawed premise given how much hate Conor does get from a solid percentage of the population).
“Why is @floydmayweather hated for the way he carries himself but @thenotoriousmma is loved for the same way he carries himself?” someone in Floyd’s comments asked.
“My take on it is that the world knows Con Artist McLoser can steal everything from me and be loved but I’m hated,” Floyd wrote in a new post. “That just lets you all know that racism still exists. Just know, that bum will never be me or be on my level. I’m just built different, my mindset is on another planet, my skills are second to none, I’m a natural-born winner and yes I talk a lot of trash, but every time I back it up! This is what they hate.
“It’s sad that you can be a poor black kid from the ghetto that has dealt with racism your whole life and work extremely hard to put yourself and your family in a better position, and most of the hate comes from my own people.
“Conor cannot even win in his own sport, but talking about coming back to boxing to fight Pacquiao,” Mayweather finished. “Nobody wants to see that, it’s like my leftovers eating leftovers.”
Ironic that Mayweather would talk about fights nobody wants to see when there are reports his February exhibition bout with Logan Paul is being postponed due to lack of sales. But hey, a little more trash talk like this and maybe he can get some interest going in a real fight? Not against someone like Manny Pacquiao, of course. Don’t be crazy.
