“Notorious” will appear in court on Oct. 11.
Former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) lightweight champion Conor McGregor, who also held gold at 145 pounds, will have to take a break from his cryptic Twitter campaign to answer for an assault charge on Oct. 11 in Dublin District Court.
McGregor, 31, was pinched under Section Two of the Non-Fatal Offenses Against the Person Act, according to a report from Independent.ie, and could face a hefty fine, as well as a maximum of six-months in jail, if convicted.
At least the mob isn’t after him this time.
“Notorious” was caught on video slugging a local boozehound back in April, after the persnickety pub patron refused a glass of the Irishman’s Proper No. 12 Whiskey. Considering some of the negative reviews I’ve seen, I can’t say I blame him.
Shortly after footage of the pub punch made its way online (see it again here), McGregor issued a statement to the mixed martial arts (MMA) media, confessing to the misdeed and promising to get control of his personal life, which has continued to land him in legal trouble both stateside and abroad.
Fortunately, no buses (or cellphones) were injured in this latest attack.
McGregor has not competed since last year’s submission loss to Khabib Nurmagomedov in the UFC 229 main event in Las Vegas, which also got “Notorious” in hot water after a post-fight brawl erupted both inside and outside the cage.
How this latest legal hiccup affects plans for a UFC return — if at all — remains to be seen.
