Conor McGregor’s rival Floyd Mayweather is taking a fight in Japan, and McGregor had a somewhat strange reaction to the news.
Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the last few years, you’re likely aware that UFC lightweight Conor McGregor has some history with pound-for-pound boxing legend Floyd Mayweather. The two men went on an epic press tour before their August 2016 boxing match, gaining enough attention to draw one of the highest buyrates in PPV history.
They have both moved in separate directions since then, despite some scattered talk about a rematch. McGregor finally returned to the UFC, where he was beaten by Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 229 in another huge PPV hit. Mayweather had been staying in retirement, sending out feelers for another fight with McGregor, or Khabib, or even Manny Pacquiao. But nothing came of it.
Now, out of nowhere, Floyd will be fighting in Japan for Rizin FF on New Years Eve. He’s taking on 20-year-old kickboxing superstar Tenshin Nasukawa. The news caught everyone off guard, including his old buddy Conor.
McGregor took to Instagram to comment on the fight in a very Conor-like way – with a bunch of shade followed by begrudging respect:
“Is that a tracksuit or a sauna suit Floyd haha wtf. is it hot in Tokyo or what’s the story here? that climate change is no joke f—k me hahah
What in the f—k is going on here? Who’s this little prick next to you ? That’s mad shit. Like something out of rush hour 5 or something. Chris tucker and Jackie f—king Chan back in this bitch. F—king brilliant. Mad little bastard you are Floyd. Fair fucks to you mate. No lie. F—k it.”
There’s no word on what ruleset will be used for the Mayweather vs. Nasukawa fight. Regardless though, McGregor will probably be tuning in to watch.
