One of the greatest women’s MMA careers has come to an end on a sour note.
Megumi Fujii, long considered at one time the best pound-for-pound female fighter in the world, lost a rematch to Jessica Aguilar at Vale Tudo Japan 3rd as a result of a second-round doctor stoppage due to an eye injury. The bout, which took place Saturday night in Ota, Tokyo, Japan, was Fujii’s retirement fight.
Fujii was poked in the right eye twice in the first round. The second eye poke proved to be serious, as the fight was stopped for a considerable amount of time before “Mega Megu” decided to continue fighting despite the noticeable injury.
With the condition of her eye seriously deteriorating and Aguilar dominating the fight, the cageside doctor decided to stop the fight between rounds two and three. For more on the Fujii-Aguilar bout, visit MMARising.com.
Following the fight, the promotion put on an emotional retirement ceremony for the legendary Japanese fighter.
The 39-year-old Fujii leaves MMA with a 26-3 record. Two of those three losses came against Aguilar, who also won a controversial unanimous decision over Fujii at Bellator 69 in May 2012. Nineteen of Fujii’s 26 wins came via submission.
