Melvin Guillard will be on the sidelines for a year after failing a drug test following Bellator 159.

Melvin Guillard has had many issues over the years – working his way through many MMA camps, being unable to make weight, and failing drug tests are just a few of them. The latter of those has popped up again for Guillard following a Bellator 159 win over David Rickels.

Guillard, who was unable to make weight for the fight, failed a drug test for a non-PED substance, and has been suspended for one year. In addition, he was fined $10,000.

The governing body handing down the suspension is the Kansas Athletic Commission, who released a statement today notifying the world of the failure and ban. The bout with Rickels, which took place on July 22nd in Mulvane, KS, has also been flipped to a No Contest.

“The first and foremost job of the Kansas Athletic Commission is to protect the health and welfare of the fighters we are charged with regulating” Kansas commission head Adam Roorback said in the statement. “Banned substances have no place in the world of combat sports, and their usage will not be allowed in the state of Kansas.”

Guillard has missed weight for four out of his last five fights, and worked his way out of contracts with the UFC and WSOF in the last few years. He tested positive for cocaine after a UFC fight in 2007.
