UFC middleweight contender Michael Bisping underwent emergency eye surgery to repair a detached retina last week, according to a report made by MMAFighting’s Ariel Helwani on Tuesday’s edition of UFC Tonight.
Bisping complained of blurry vision prior to his UFC 159 bout against Alan Belcher, and ultimately lost all peripheral vision in his right eye before visiting an ophthalmologist on Tuesday of last week. Bisping underwent eye surgery on Thursday, a day after receiving a cortisone epidural in his spine to repair lingering neck issues.
The operation was deemed a success and Bisping (24-5) is already targeting potential match-ups in the UFC middleweight division. Luckily, there’s no shortage of contenders taking turns calling the Brit out.
Repeating statements made last week, Bisping remains uninterested in a bout against former Strikeforce champion Luke Rockhold, who Bisping believes isn’t high enough yet on the division’s ladder. He is, however, chiefly intrigued in a match-up against Cung Le, who scored a massive upset knockout of Rich Franklin in late-2012.
If Le doesn’t pan out, Bisping would also be interested in meeting either Yushin Okami or Costa Philippou, both of whom have called out the Brit in recent months.
Bisping most recently rebounded from a highlight-reel head kick knockout at the hands of Vitor Belfort to defeat Belcher via technical judges’ decision at UFC 159. Officials stopped the bout late in the third round after an inadvertent but brutal eye poke rendered Belcher unable to continue.
