Bringing you the weird and wild from the world of MMA each and every weeknight!
Welcome to Midnight Mania!
UFC doesn’t hold more than a couple events per year in “The Golden State,” but they’re always informative. The California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) is one of the few states that still reveals fighter purses, offering rare insight into the modern state of fighter pay. In addition, the CSAC has made it a top priority to tackle excessive weight cutting (when they’re not getting fooled by Merab Dvalishvili, at least).
A big part of that approach is weighing fighters on the evening of the event. Ideally, CSAC would prefer fighters gain less than 10% of their weight back between weigh-ins and competition. More than 15% often means the commission will not let the athlete compete at that weight class again in the future, though that’s difficult to enforce on a promotion like the UFC that travels between various states and countries. All of this information is public and has been helpfully compiled by MMA Fighting.
Check out the full list of UFC 311 fighter’s and their respective weight gain percentage below:
Islam Makhachev: 154.5 to 178 pounds (23.5 pounds), 17%
Renato Moicano: 155 to 181.8 pounds (26.8 pounds), 17%

Jamahal Hill: 205.5 to 221.8 pounds (16.3 pounds), 8%

Kevin Holland: 183.5 to 190.4 pounds (6.9 pounds), 4%
Raoni Barcelos: 135.5 to 158.2 pounds (22.7 pounds), 17%
Payton Talbott: 135.5 to 158.2 pounds (22.7 pounds), 17%

Karol Rosa: 135.5 to 154 pounds (18.5 pounds), 14%
Muin Gafurov: 136 to 151.8 pounds (15.8 pounds), 12%
Rinya Nakamura: 135.5 to 148.6 pounds (13.1 pounds), 10%

Ricky Turcios: 136 to 156.6 pounds (20.6 pounds), 15%
Tagir Ulanbekov: 125.5 to 147.4 pounds (21.9 pounds), 17%
Clayton Carpenter: 125.5 to 141.2 pounds (15.7 pounds), 13%
There are quite a few surprising and notable numbers in this list. For one, who would have guessed that former Featherweight Renato Moicano would be heavier than the champion with the huge back muscles and crushing squeeze? “Money” must be eating well!
Jiri Prochazka was another surprise. The former Light Heavyweight kingpin never seems small in the Octagon, but he’s definitely very light for the division. If he does go to Middleweight at some point in the future, he would still be weighing less than somebody like Paulo Costa, who has rehydrated all the way up to 215-pounds by fight night.
Finally, Reinier de Ridder vs. Kevin Holland was the biggest numerical mismatch of the evening, as “The Dutch Knight” was 22 pounds heavier than his opponent. That’s a shocking figure, but it does make sense. Holland has competed at Welterweight fairly recently, whereas de Ridder was an accomplished Light Heavyweight prior to his UFC signing.

Public opinion has really turned against Kevin Holland after his quick loss to Reinier de Ridder. Perhaps it’s time to cut weight and try harder?

Slips, rips, and KO clips
Geoff Neal didn’t even get knocked down in his sole KO loss is my takeaway here.

A golden kickboxing rule: no free kicks!
Superbon countering Tawanchai’s left kick with his boxing.
Right hand : Uses his lead forearm to block the kick, use the bounce of the kick to take the side step and counter with the right hand.
Left hand : Circle away from the kick and reach for that lead hook on the weak… pic.twitter.com/OWYvXkRoF1
