Bringing you the weird and wild from the worlds of MMA each and every weeknight
Welcome to Midnight Mania!
It has been a good few days for martial artists foiling would-be bad guys. UFC female fighter Polyana Viana beat the snot out of a would-be robber; a former UFC fighter, Denis Stojnic, beat up a nightclub thug who attempted to assault a woman; and a karate master ‘dealt with’ an attempted kidnapping so thoroughly, the man ended up in the hospital.
Instructor Randall Ephraim explains, via CNN and MSN.com:
“There were still some kids in the dojo being picked up by parents and a couple of adult students cleaning up when a young lady came through our doors and stated that someone was trying to harm her,” he told CNN.
”Shortly afterward, a big male entered the building,” he said. “Not knowing what he wanted, I assumed he was inquiring about classes.
”I asked how I could assist him and he stated that he was there for the lady. She insisted that she did not know him and tried to kidnap her.”
The man, who was under the influence, had reportedly attempted to grab the woman outside the Bushiken Karate Charlotte Dojo in north Charlotte, North Carolina. When the man refused to leave and got aggressive, Ephraim had to deal with him.
“He then tried to force himself further into the dojo, aggressively pushing and swinging,” Ephraim told CNN. “I then went into action defending myself and got him out of the dojo. Once outside he attempted to attack again and was dealt with accordingly.”
“He was very strong – very, very strong,” he told the local media. “He weighed at least 200 (pounds) and some change, under the influence – very strong powerful individual.”
He also said that the man “started smoking something.” Police say he was “definitely under the influence of some drugs.”
The suspect, August Williams, has been arrested several times in the past for drugs and assault. He was taken to the hospital to be treated for injuries before going to jail.
Insomnia
This is a great clash of styles, but it seems likely Jessica Andrade is going to run straight through Rose Namajunas to fulfill the first part of my 2019 prediction.
Breaking: Rose Namajunas will defend her strawweight title against Jessica Andrade in enemy territory, at UFC 237 on May 11 in Brazil, per Dana White. More coming to @ESPN shortly. pic.twitter.com/7vgsbJ9mXG

Joanna Jedrzejczyk is flying… if Andrade wins she should be right back in line for another title shot at strawweight, though I want to see Suarez get her shot first
Colby Covington is getting screwed over by the UFC and no one seems to care because its Colby Covington.
In the end, while Colby Covington was ready to go for 235, UFC chose to go with Usman because his stock rose mightily in their eyes after the RDA win + his subsequent willingness to fight anyone on short notice in January despite being injured. Covington held out and it cost him.

Colby Covington was asked by @arielhelwani why he is not getting a shot for the welterweight belt against Tyron Woodley.
“I didn’t get the title shot because of politics. Dana White has lied to me. The UFC has lied to me.” #HelwaniShow

Colby Covington tells @arielhelwani that he was offered a fight with Nick Diaz this past November and was willing to accept it even though it didn’t make sense because it would help the UFC.

These guys are doing 2019 right so far, perverts don’t get a pass any more. Plus, check out the People’s Elbow

It’s been a while since we checked in on our crazy Southern workout guy Bud Jeffries, let’s see… yep… he’s still doing the weirdest stuff of anyone not named Tony Ferguson. This is the kind of neck strength I want, though.
Watch Beneil Dariush, Fabricio Werdum, Kelvin Gastelum and Marvin Vettori just go melee mode in the gym against each other
There were a couple good MMA zingers today
Something about Colby losing his title shot to an immigrant who was able to do the work quicker just feels a little too on the nose.

It’s funny because Jarred Brooks did actually knock himself out.
If defending R. Kelly is the hill you want to die on, then sure, knock yourself out. pic.twitter.com/eg8MFNyhM4

This was a remarkable story over the weekend, these pictures are much worse than I had expected. She really messed him up.

Alexander Gustafsson calling out Corey Anderson is a smart move, and a great matchup.
While we are on Corey Anderson, did you know Ben Askren introduced him to his wife?
.@CoreyA_MMA says that @Benaskren is the reason he got into fighting & also the person that introduced him to his wife. #HelwaniShow @arielhelwani

Tenshin Nasukawa is endlessly respectful, but this is probably the stupidest combat sports idea of 2019 so far.
Dear Mr. McGregor. @TheNotoriousMMA
Thank you very much for remembering my name. I’m honored that you would even consider fighting me.58kg, kickboxing rules would probably get us in the ring sometime in the near future pic.twitter.com/BTgVVnwXLA

Tito Ortiz and Chael Sonnen can just keep fighting old people like each other until the end of time for all I care.
.@ChaelSonnen You said you would get back to me in 6 months and it’s only been 6 days since the new year! Lol Looks like I’m going to stomp a bigger hole in your face. No submission this time. smashing time! Let’s fight winner take all? You’re going down! https://t.co/WUtBxcflH1

Mike Bisping had some fans butthurt in the comments with this video, but his reasoning was the same as mine anytime I include anything political in Midnight Mania: politics, aside, is it genuinely funny?
Great flow from Bellator featherweight and three-sport athlete Gaston Bolanos
I cracked up at this.
This was even before they added Cody Garbrandt vs. Pedro Munhoz to UFC 235

Jon Jones trying to learn Caucasian dancing
Jon Jones fighting Anthony Smith is okay, but what I’m really excited for is when he gets around to facing Thiago Santos, Luke Rockhold, and Dominick Reyes. Also… if Yoel Romero wanted, this would be the perfect time to jump a weight class and get a fresh title shot. I’m just saying…
I mean, lets be honest, Thiago Santos is the more dangerous threat between the two

I do wonder how Luke Rockhold will look at 205. He’s got the size and grappling chops, its more a matter of his chin holding up and his striking evolving.
Cain Velasquez is pretending like he’s back, too, but I’m not sold just yet.
Paulo Costa is the best because he looks so stupid shadowboxing, but in real fights he destroys people.
It’s also been a good weekend for people fighting cops, apparently. This guy put his savate to use:
