Lets take and uncomfortably closer look at the main event.
What a bummer. That card embodied what a Fight Night should be: full of action from fighters with potential and veterans keeping them honest. I loved the banger between Charles Jourdain and Marcelo Rojo, old dogs Davey Grant and Rani Yaya refusing to go quietly into the night, and Angela Hill putting in the body work on Ashley Yoder. If was a grand old night until Ya Boi, Erik Anders…
One final thought, there was a moment of compassion I caught as Dan Ige and Gavin Tucker awaited the winner’s announcement. Referee Mike Beltran let go of Tucker’s wrist and patted him on the back, keenly aware of the young fighter’s emotional state. We thrash the refs and occasionally laud their good calls, but they see as many dreams die as they see dreams realized. To provide a moment of comfort in the seconds before raising the winner’s hand takes another kind of situational awareness.
These charcoal drawings are made during fight night. Take care of yourself and I’ll talk to you Wednesday.
