According to a report from Hawaii News Now, former UFC welterweight and lightweight champion B.J. Penn was arrested early Sunday morning on the island of Maui for second-degree assault.
The outlet reports that Penn was allegedly involved in an argument with a friend of his while the pair were out drinking in Kihei, a popular vacation destination on Maui’s South Shore.
via Hawaii News Now:
Sources said that Kuuipo Mokiao told investigators that he pushed Penn to stop him from picking a fight with people inside Kauhale’s Bar in Kihei. The retired UFC champ then allegedly challenged him to a fight.
Mokiao told police that once they headed into the parking lot, Penn suddenly punched him in the face, according to sources. The Kahului man also said that while was defending himself, Penn kneed him in the forehead.
The 37-year-old was then reportedly taken to the emergency room at Maui Memorial Medical Center for a fractured left eye socket. Mokiao then told officers that Penn left the scene of the scrap after it was broken up by security.
Penn was then reportedly arrested by police at a hotel in Wailea about two miles from the scene of the incident. Penn was released pending the police investigation, reportedly having suffered only a minor cut to his right eye.
Unfortunately for Penn, this wasn’t his first run-in with the law stemming from a fight.
In 2007, Penn pleaded no contest to assaulting a Honolulu police officer. Penn was involved in a large fight outside a Waikiki’s Zanzabar Nightclub in 2005.
Penn was accused of punching the officer in the face while he attempted to break up the fray. He later pleaded down to a misdemeanor charge of third-degree assault, rather than the felony charge of assaulting an officer.

FANPOST OF THE DAY
Today’s Fanpost of the Day comes via Hoss.Boss.
I’m not saying this was a good decision, but it was a classic Henderson-close fight that left media scoring various rounds various ways. According to mmadecisions.com only two media members scored it for Cerrone, but how the members got their scores all came differently.
Round 1 – All three media members at Sherdog.com, along with mmamania.com, bloodyelbow.com gave it to Cerrone
Mmajunkie.com gave it to Henderson, while Luke Thomas at mmafighting.com gave it a draw at 10-10.…
