On the mend with a broken thumb, UFC lightweight Josh Thomson set the interwebs ablaze early Sunday morning with an inflammatory callout of Nick Diaz.
I knocked out your brother, I’ll knock ur bitch ass out in San Jose July 26th.Let’s do it Bitch, San Jose vs Stockon. Yup, FUCK U NICK DIAZ!
– Josh Thomson (@THEREALPUNK) May 4, 2014
The tweet seemed a bit out of character for Thomson and now we know why. Revealing his phone was stolen, Thomson says the episode was pure fakery.
People that know me, know I wouldn’t ever talk about a fighter like this. My phone was stolen last night while at dinner.
— Josh Thomson (@THEREALPUNK) May 4, 2014
I respect every fighter and especially the Diaz brothers. @NateDiaz209 an @nickdiaz209 always been cool guys to me and nothing bad to say
— Josh Thomson (@THEREALPUNK) May 4, 2014
My apologies to anyone who was offended by the tweets and texts.
— Josh Thomson (@THEREALPUNK) May 4, 2014
Count Stockton’s own Nate Diaz among the offended. Thomson scored ‘Knockout of the Night’ honors against Diaz at UFC on FOX 7 last April and he wasn’t quick to take ‘The Punk’ at his word.
You got drunk talked a bunch of stupid shit when you woke up you panicked an #backpeddled #sorryasslittlebitch #whatreallyhappened #bereal
— Nathan Diaz (@NateDiaz209) May 5, 2014
Nick Diaz can’t be bothered to fight the elite of the welterweight division so an argument for this Thomson fight need not be made. Nate Diaz is another matter. Sitting at No. 6 in the lightweight division the man from the 209 needs to maintain momentum built upon his stunning KO of Gray Maynard in November. Returning off an injury and a loss to Ben Henderson at UFC on FOX 10, Thomson (No. 4) would seem to make sense as an opponent.
5 MUST-READ STORIES
Glover reflects. Glover Teixeira on his torn labrum, making a ‘big mistake’ against Jon Jones and being scared of eye pokes. ‘I was a little afraid to close the distance and get poked in the eye again and maybe stop the fight. The second eye poke really scared me because I thought it could hurt my eye.’
Beating Weidman. Given some extra time, Lyoto Machida says he’s even more confident he knows how to take the middleweight title.
‘Only a talker.’ Jose Aldo says he hopes Conor McGregor can live up to the hype. ‘I’m open to new challenges and I really hope he gets where he’s saying he will, so we can fight and see for sure everything he says.’
Heyman Hustle. Chael Sonnen credits pro wrestling personality Paul Heyman for saving TUF Brazil 3. ‘So not only should we thank Paul for the huge ratings, but we can also blame him for all the bad things.’
Juggernaut. Jake Ellenberger isn’t impressed with Johny Hendricks and doesn’t think Tyron Woodley is worthy of UFC title shot.

FANPOST OF THE DAY
Today’s Fanpost of the Day comes via evildregs.
Wrong to Call Jones’ Arm Crank Dirty
I was wrong to call Jones’ arm crank on Teixeira dirty. I don’t know what Jones was thinking. I don’t know if he thought of the consequences. I don’t know that any other fighter wouldn’t have done the same thing given the same opportunity.
There are some good GIFs of the crank and Frank Mir’s similar crank in this MMA Fighting post. I won’t post them directly here because I don’t own them and I’m unsure of the rules for such things.
Regardless of what you call it, I still see a difference in what Jones did vs. most other submissions. Jones threw his body into the crank, full power all at once. I see other fighters apply submissions quickly, but usually with enough control and restraint that the opponent has at least a split second to tap before significant damage is done.
