Nevada Athletic Commission fine Nate Diaz $50,000 for UFC 202 bottle-throwing fiasco

Diaz has been fined $50,000 for his bottle-throwing war with McGregor at the UFC 202 pre-fight press conference.

Prior to Nate Diaz’ five-round scrap with Conor McGregor at UFC 202, the two fighters engaged in a bottle-throwing war at the pre-fight press conference on Aug. 17.

Things kicked off when Diaz, 31, abruptly left the conference stage to join his brother Nick Diaz in the audience. Accompanied with members of Cesar Gracie Jiu Jitsu, Diaz and his team began lobbing water bottles at McGregor, which resulted in an all-out war between the two parties. At one point, former UFC contender Jake Shields even looked to launch a reporter’s laptop at McGregor.

‘The Notorious’, who ended up beating Diaz via majority decision at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, was fined $75,000 (2.5 percent of his $3 million purse) by the NAC and sentenced to 50 hours of community service. Diaz, it seems, will also face a similar punishment.

As reported on Thursday by Shaun Al-Shatti of MMA Fighting, the former lightweight title challenger was fined $50,000 (2.5 percent of his $2 million purse) and will face 50 hours of community service.

McGregor has refused to pay the fine and will challenge NAC in court, but Diaz is reported to have reached a settlement with the commission’s executive director, Bob Bennett.

Until the fine is paid, Diaz will not be able to compete in Nevada but is eligible to fight in other states. McGregor, who recently obtained a California-state boxing license, was denied a license from Nevada due to his refusal to pay the fine.
