As Sage Northcutt expects further physical growth, he also foresees a fighting future at 185 pounds sooner or later.
After a two-fight run back at lightweight, Sage Northcutt decided to return to welterweight once again. This move proved to be a good one, as he was able to score a second round TKO win against Zak Ottow last weekend, marking his first stoppage win since his UFC debut in 2015.
But according to “Super” Sage, 170-pounds is not the limit. Speaking to reporters after the fight, the 22-year-old Team Alpha Male fighter foresees competing at middleweight in his future.
“I’m still growing, so who knows?” said Northcutt, who stands at 6’0”. “If you look at my brother, my brother’s like 6’4”, and he’s only 19 years old. So, who knows? I hope I’m as tall as him, I might be 6’5” and I could be 220 pounds or 230 pounds. I have no idea.”
“My mom’s side of the family, my mom’s dad was 6-foot-5, 6-foot-6, really tall. I could be fighting (at) 185 in the future, be fighting a lot bigger. But first, 170.”
As for moving back down to 155 pounds, Northcutt says it is still doable, but he would rather be more efficient and remain at 170 pounds for the time being.
“I can make 155, it’s an extremely tough weight cut for me. I walk around very lean, even at 170 pounds, my skin is super paper thin.”
“Making that weight’s super tough for me. I don’t quite feel like the same Sage as I do in training. And as you saw out there, I was hitting my opponent with some hammer fists and knocked him out. So, I just feel like at 170, I’m more explosive, more powerful and (it’s) a better weight class.”
Northcutt is currently 1-2 at welterweight in the UFC. The two losses were courtesy of Bryan Barberena and Mickey Gall, respectively in 2016, with both fights ending via second-round submission.
