The Nevada commission has decided to formalize their complaint against Canelo Alvarez after his two failed tests for clenbuterol.

Things are going from bad to worse for the prospective rematch between Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin. After being issued a temporary suspension by the Nevada Athletic Commission following two failed tests for clenbuterol, the commission ordered him to attend a hearing on April 18th to discuss the issues in person.

The temporary suspension was supposed to be extended in a March 30th hearing, but that has been canceled due to the official complaint being filed.

NSAC commissioner Bob Bennett released a statement (via MMA Fighting) explaining the circumstances:

“After completing my investigation, I made the determination to file a complaint against Mr. Alvarez and set the matter for a disciplinary hearing during the Commission’s regularly scheduled meeting on April 18th. Therefore, I am cancelling the hearing that was scheduled for Friday, March 30th.”

Alvarez tested positive for the drug in two separate instances in mid-February. Golden Boy immediately stated that it came from tainted meat, which does happen in places like Mexico and China. Many UFC fighters have been exonerated on positive clenbuterol tests due to this defense, but USADA isn’t handling the testing for Alvarez vs. Golovkin – VADA is.

Alvarez vs. Golovkin 2 is still scheduled for May 5th in Las Vegas right now, but that is obviously reliant on the outcome of the April 18th commission meeting that Alvarez will be attending.
